'Lost' actors: What will be next for Terry O'Quinn and Josh Holloway?

The true sign of an ending show is when its stars book other gigs — but it’s unlikely fans will see a flurry of casting headlines involving the highly-sought after actors of ABC’s Lost. Though it was reported today that Daniel Dae Kim will play one of the leads in the CBS pilot Hawaii Five-0, it may be months before we hear whether the Emmy-winning Terry O’Quinn (Locke) or Josh Holloway (Sawyer) has been recruited to play the leads in other fall projects. Laments one Hollywood talent agent, “They all shoot through April, so doing a pilot will be difficult for all of them. These producers make it difficult on everyone in working out conflicts.” CBS was able to snag Kim (Jin) because Five-0 will film on the big island, where Lost is shot. He’ll play Detective Chin Ho Kelly in the update of the ’60s cop drama (the role of Detective Steve McGarrett has not yet been cast).

But there are at least two Lost actors who won’t be sending out resume photos this spring – if ever. Matthew Fox (Jack) told reporters at the show’s annual Sunset on the Beach premiere last month that he either wants to do film or “something else entirely.” Evangeline Lilly (Kate) also told E Online that she wants to bug out of TV and do charity work in Rwanda. “I’m not passionate about acting the way you probably should be to call yourself an actor,” she told E Online’s Kristin Dos Santos. “I want to have some quiet space … drop off the radar a little bit and enjoy a little bit of normalcy again.”

Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen to star in Sarah Polley's new film

Finally, Sarah Polley is making a new movie. The indie queen from Canada who blew everyone away with her thoughtful, poignant drama Away From Her back in 2007, is set to direct a romantic comedy called Take This Waltz, from an original screenplay of hers that landed on 2009’s Black List. The film, about a love triangle in which Michelle Williams’ character struggles with infidelity will have her starring opposite Seth Rogen and another man, yet to be cast. Williams is fresh off a buzz-making turn in Blue Valentine, which debuted at this year’s Sundance. That film, in which she plays a wife in a marriage gone bad opposite Ryan Gosling, is already generating early Oscar buzz for the two leads and Weinstein Co. purchased it for just over $1 million.

Polley, who was at Sundance to promote the movie Splice, which she stars opposite Adrien Brody, is thrilled to get back into the director’s chair. She began writing the screenplay while she was editing her feature directorial debut Away From Her, but abandoned it for a few years. She went back to it recently when she needed to write something to make her happy. “This script was written with so much ease and so much joy and I loved every second of it,” she says. “It’s so rare for writing to not be a tortured process, so you have to go with that.” Waltz will film in Toronto this summer. Financing is not yet complete and the film has no distribution yet.

EW Exclusive: Malcolm's back on 'The Young and the Restless' ... but it's not who you think

Fans of The Young and the Restless who’ve been holding out hope that the smoldering Shemar Moore will reprise his role as the tempestuous Malcolm Winters are in for a rude awakening … the dude’s never coming back! But his character is: EW has learned exclusively that Darius McCrary – best known for playing Eddie Winslow on the long-running ABC sitcom Family Matters – has signed a multi-year deal to assume the role beginning Nov. 18.  His debut will air on Dec. 29.

“We are thrilled to have the character of Malcolm back on Y&R,” according to a statement from Maria Bell, the drama’s co-executive producer/head writer. “Malcolm, Neil Winters’ brother, has always been a catalyst to exciting stories. He’s coming back to town to see his brother and to reunite with his biological daughter, Lily Winters, as she fights for her life. Malcolm is a photographer…someone who lives on the edge and who always pushes the envelope.”

Though he left the sudser  in 2005 to co-star in CBS’ Criminal Minds, Moore once entertained the thought of briefly returning to the show that made him a star. His reps could not be reached for comment, but it seems obvious that Moore’s busy schedule (Minds is about to air its 100th episode) — combined with the fact that Bell wanted the Malcolm character back full-time – made it impossible for Moore to return (one insider even said that Moore has been approached before about coming back to the show but it was clear that it wouldn’t work out because of his commitment to Minds).

McCrary will find a familiar face on the Y&R set; the Emmy-winning Bryton James (Devon) used to co-star as Richie Crawford on Family Matters, as well.

Exclusive: Anna Faris, Dan Aykroyd, Justin Timberlake line up for 'Yogi Bear'

Categories: Casting, Film, News

Anna Faris is sticking to the world of children’s entertainment. The blonde comedian best known for her starring role in House Bunny, and who recently voiced a lead role in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, is in negotiations to star in Warner Bros. live-action/CG-animated feature Yogi Bear. She will play Rachel, a nature documentary filmmaker shooting Yogi and Boo-Boo for her next project. Dan Aykroyd is in negotiations to voice the CG-animated Yogi while Justin Timberlake is in talks to voice Boo-Boo. The film, from producer Donald DeLine, is set to begin filming in Auckland, New Zealand next month. Eric Brevig (Journey to the Center of the Earth) is directing a script from Brad Copeland (Wild Hogs). A remake of Yogi Bear seems to be an incredibly unnecessary project but with these inspired casting choices perhaps a good movie will prevail.

Elizabeth Mitchell cast in indie drama 'Answers to Nothing'

Categories: Casting, Film, Movie Biz, News

Though she’s busy battling aliens in the new ABC drama V and will pop up again on Lost this season, Elizabeth Mitchell is carving out some time to shoot a movie too: She’ll star in the indie ensemble drama Answers to Nothing, EW.com has confirmed. In the film, which is set against the backdrop of a child abduction chase and focuses on lost Angelenos in search of redemption, Mitchell is a woman consumed by her desire to have a baby with her husband (Dane Cook).  “Playing a hormonal woman whose marriage is shaky and who has lost her way through her ultimate obsession—I love stuff like that. That’s where I live,” she tells EW.com, adding: “The movie is a little bit like Magnolia where you get this glimpse into people’s lives and it may not be exactly what you want to see, but it is accurate.” Currently shooting in Los Angeles, Answers to Nothing also stars Julie Benz, Barbara Hershey, Zach Gilford, Kali Hawk, Eric Palladino, Mark Kelly, Miranda Bailey, and singer Aja Volkman.  Matthew Leutwyler (Dead & Breakfast) is directing and co-writing the film, which is being produced by Ambush Entertainment (The Squid and the Whale).

She will play a character named Clarissa who has a history with Simon Frasier (Paul Leyden).  ATWT averages 2.52 million viewers.

Exclusive: Eric Braeden says it's 'end of road' in negotiations with 'Young and the Restless'

Categories: Casting, News, TV Biz, Television

Eric-Braeden_lGenoa City fans who were holding out hope that Victor Newman will stay should start prepping their goodbyes now: Eric Braeden told EW.com exclusively today that “it’s the end of the road” and he’s “pulled the plug” on any more talks to stay on The Young and the Restless. In September, Braeden walked off the set of the soap that he’s called home since 1980 after an ugly contract negotiation with Sony. The production company wanted Braeden, 68, to take a pay cut but the actor opted to leave, instead. Braeden told EW that he has since made a counter offer (he offered to take a “substantial” pay cut on the top of a voluntary 10% reduction he took two years ago) but it apparently wasn’t enough for Sony. Braeden’s last appearance on the soap will air Nov. 2.

“We reached an impasse in the negotiations,” Braeden told EW.com. “I have shown flexibility, they have shown none. It is over. I pulled the plug. That’s it. No more. If I show good will, I expect it to be reciprocated. If there is a rigid attitude on the other side, what is there to to negotiate? That’s a sign of utter disrespect. I will not negotiate with people who remain aloof and arrogant about the whole thing. Not after 30 years, I won’t do that. I’m saying this with a great amount of sadness because I’ve had nothing but respect for my fellow cast members, I have deep respect for the crew who has done an extraordinary job year in and year out, and I have enormous respect for (head writer) Maria Bell.”

Sony and CBS did not respond to requests for comment but an insider with knowledge of the negotiations said Braeden, who had been earning a seven-figure salary, would continue to earn a seven-figure salary if he agreed to a pay cut. The cast and crew of Restless – which, at 5.12 million, is the most-watched soap in daytime today – have taken pay cuts over the last year, the insider said. Braeden says he was the first cast member to offer to take a pay cut two years ago.

Like most soaps today, Restless can’t command the same kind of rich license fee from CBS that it used to because of the softening ad market in daytime – thus Sony’s attempt to lower production costs. However, Sony continues to make money off the popular drama by selling its reruns overseas and to Soapnet.

Braeden said he’s exploring new opportunities but declined to elaborate. “It’s slowly sinking in (that I’m leaving),” said Braeden. “It’s sad.”

Exclusive: Marlon Wayans in talks to play Richard Pryor

Categories: Casting, Film

Funny man Marlon Wayans is in advanced discussions to play one of comedy’s most iconic figures in the biopic Richard Pryor: Is it Something I Said for Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Prods. and Sony Pictures. The project has been written and will be directed by Bill Condon (Dreamgirls). Eddie Murphy was originally attached to star in the project, but he dropped out over conflicts with Paramount Pictures, which was previously on board to finance the film.

While Wayans is primarily known for his comedic roles in Wayans Bros.’ movies such as Dance Flick and White Chicks, he received critical acclaim for his dramatic turn in 1999’s Requiem for a Dream. Sources tell EW.com that Wayans fought for the role, blowing the producers away with a 13- min screen test where he “transforms into Pryor.” The movie depicts Pryor’s controversial brand of comedy and his battle with drugs and is currently budgeted at $20 million.  Chris Rock, Pryor’s widow Jennifer Lee Pryor and Mark Gordon are also lined up to produce. Producers are still working out the terms of Wayans’ deal, and  other major aspects of the overall project have not been finalized.  Sony did not respond to requests for comment.
