Justin Timberlake joins cast of Sony's 'Bad Teacher'

Justin Timberlake sure doesn’t have much time for music with his movie career taking off. Fresh off his role in David Fincher’s upcoming Facebook movie The Social Network, Timberlake has signed on opposite Cameron Diaz and Jason Segal in the comedy Bad Teacher from director Jake Kasdan (Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story). He will play a substitute teacher, the scion of a watch company fortune. Also joining the cast of the movie that centers on Segal’s character, an irreverent middle school teacher, are Molly Shannon and Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family’s Cameron.) The film written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky begins production later this month.

Exclusive: Julianne Moore may return to 'As the World Turns'

julianne-moore_320.jpg The soon-to-be-history As the World Turns may be one of the least-watched soap operas in daytime TV but it’s looking to go out with a bang: Sources confirm to EW exclusively that the CBS sudser is in serious talks with Julianne Moore (A Single Man) to reprise her role (roles?) as Frannie and Sabrina Hughes. The Oscar-nominated actress got her start on ATWT in 1985 by playing the half-sisters - a depiction that earned her a Daytime Emmy in 1988, the year she left the show.

It’s unclear how Moore will be woven into the final episodes of the drama, which will end its 54-year-run in September, but it’s not expected to be a significant appearance. CBS declined to comment.

ATWT helped launch the film careers of many young actors. Meg Ryan played heroine Betsy Stewart Montgomery Andropoulos in the early ’80s, while Marisa Tomei moved to Oakdale in 1983 to depict teenager Marcy Thompson (she left in 1985). Other actors who did stints on ATWT include Parker Posey (Tess Shelby, 1991-92), Amy Ryan (1990), Dana Delany (1981), Lauryn Hill (1991), Emmy Rossum (1999), Martin Sheen (Jack Davis, 1965-1970), and the late John Spencer (1988).

As for Moore, the actress has made it clear that she wants to do more work on the small screen: she’s been fielding offers this development season after turning heads as Jack’s Boston gal pal on 30 Rock. Sadly, she turned down one of the higher-profile roles for a woman this fall – NBC’s remake of Prime Suspect. The network has since temporarily shelved the project until it can find the right leading lady.

ATWT was created in 1956 as a sister show to Guiding Light, which CBS canceled last year.

UPDATE: A spokeswoman for Moore confirmed that the actress will appear on an upcoming episode of the soap. She could tape as early as Wednesday.

Taylor Lautner's next job: 'Abduction'

With all the hubbub surrounding the former Shark Boy, you would think Taylor Lautner’s got a wide-open schedule. But even with negotiations still active on how Breaking Dawn plays out on the big screen, Lautner is still likely to only fit in one film before the final Twilight chapter begins filming. How will he spend his limited amount of free time? It looks like it will be on the hot script Abduction if the studio can land a director before Lautner is required to don the werewolf fangs again. From first-time screenwriter Shawn Christensen, Abduction, which went to Lionsgate after a heated two-week bidding war, is being fast-tracked and the studio is frantically searching for a hot, young director to helm this action-adventure that reads like a teenage Bourne Identity. If, however, Lionsgate can’t secure the director in time, Lautner will remain a producer on the film and they will have to find another hot, young thing to star. Interestingly, Northern Lights, the movie that first propelled Lautner’s asking price up to $7.5 million and therefore stalled negotiations on Abduction, is definitely moving forward without the teen star. Lautner has parted ways with that project as well as Paramount’s Max Steel, which he had dropped out of in exchange for Stretch Armstrong, both of which have a long development track ahead.

'Lost' actors: What will be next for Terry O'Quinn and Josh Holloway?

The true sign of an ending show is when its stars book other gigs — but it’s unlikely fans will see a flurry of casting headlines involving the highly-sought after actors of ABC’s Lost. Though it was reported today that Daniel Dae Kim will play one of the leads in the CBS pilot Hawaii Five-0, it may be months before we hear whether the Emmy-winning Terry O’Quinn (Locke) or Josh Holloway (Sawyer) has been recruited to play the leads in other fall projects. Laments one Hollywood talent agent, “They all shoot through April, so doing a pilot will be difficult for all of them. These producers make it difficult on everyone in working out conflicts.” CBS was able to snag Kim (Jin) because Five-0 will film on the big island, where Lost is shot. He’ll play Detective Chin Ho Kelly in the update of the ’60s cop drama (the role of Detective Steve McGarrett has not yet been cast).

But there are at least two Lost actors who won’t be sending out resume photos this spring – if ever. Matthew Fox (Jack) told reporters at the show’s annual Sunset on the Beach premiere last month that he either wants to do film or “something else entirely.” Evangeline Lilly (Kate) also told E Online that she wants to bug out of TV and do charity work in Rwanda. “I’m not passionate about acting the way you probably should be to call yourself an actor,” she told E Online’s Kristin Dos Santos. “I want to have some quiet space … drop off the radar a little bit and enjoy a little bit of normalcy again.”

Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen to star in Sarah Polley's new film

Finally, Sarah Polley is making a new movie. The indie queen from Canada who blew everyone away with her thoughtful, poignant drama Away From Her back in 2007, is set to direct a romantic comedy called Take This Waltz, from an original screenplay of hers that landed on 2009’s Black List. The film, about a love triangle in which Michelle Williams’ character struggles with infidelity will have her starring opposite Seth Rogen and another man, yet to be cast. Williams is fresh off a buzz-making turn in Blue Valentine, which debuted at this year’s Sundance. That film, in which she plays a wife in a marriage gone bad opposite Ryan Gosling, is already generating early Oscar buzz for the two leads and Weinstein Co. purchased it for just over $1 million.

Polley, who was at Sundance to promote the movie Splice, which she stars opposite Adrien Brody, is thrilled to get back into the director’s chair. She began writing the screenplay while she was editing her feature directorial debut Away From Her, but abandoned it for a few years. She went back to it recently when she needed to write something to make her happy. “This script was written with so much ease and so much joy and I loved every second of it,” she says. “It’s so rare for writing to not be a tortured process, so you have to go with that.” Waltz will film in Toronto this summer. Financing is not yet complete and the film has no distribution yet.

EW Exclusive: Malcolm's back on 'The Young and the Restless' ... but it's not who you think

Fans of The Young and the Restless who’ve been holding out hope that the smoldering Shemar Moore will reprise his role as the tempestuous Malcolm Winters are in for a rude awakening … the dude’s never coming back! But his character is: EW has learned exclusively that Darius McCrary – best known for playing Eddie Winslow on the long-running ABC sitcom Family Matters – has signed a multi-year deal to assume the role beginning Nov. 18.  His debut will air on Dec. 29.

“We are thrilled to have the character of Malcolm back on Y&R,” according to a statement from Maria Bell, the drama’s co-executive producer/head writer. “Malcolm, Neil Winters’ brother, has always been a catalyst to exciting stories. He’s coming back to town to see his brother and to reunite with his biological daughter, Lily Winters, as she fights for her life. Malcolm is a photographer…someone who lives on the edge and who always pushes the envelope.”

Though he left the sudser  in 2005 to co-star in CBS’ Criminal Minds, Moore once entertained the thought of briefly returning to the show that made him a star. His reps could not be reached for comment, but it seems obvious that Moore’s busy schedule (Minds is about to air its 100th episode) — combined with the fact that Bell wanted the Malcolm character back full-time – made it impossible for Moore to return (one insider even said that Moore has been approached before about coming back to the show but it was clear that it wouldn’t work out because of his commitment to Minds).

McCrary will find a familiar face on the Y&R set; the Emmy-winning Bryton James (Devon) used to co-star as Richie Crawford on Family Matters, as well.

Exclusive: Anna Faris, Dan Aykroyd, Justin Timberlake line up for 'Yogi Bear'

Categories: Casting, Film, News

Anna Faris is sticking to the world of children’s entertainment. The blonde comedian best known for her starring role in House Bunny, and who recently voiced a lead role in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, is in negotiations to star in Warner Bros. live-action/CG-animated feature Yogi Bear. She will play Rachel, a nature documentary filmmaker shooting Yogi and Boo-Boo for her next project. Dan Aykroyd is in negotiations to voice the CG-animated Yogi while Justin Timberlake is in talks to voice Boo-Boo. The film, from producer Donald DeLine, is set to begin filming in Auckland, New Zealand next month. Eric Brevig (Journey to the Center of the Earth) is directing a script from Brad Copeland (Wild Hogs). A remake of Yogi Bear seems to be an incredibly unnecessary project but with these inspired casting choices perhaps a good movie will prevail.

Elizabeth Mitchell cast in indie drama 'Answers to Nothing'

Categories: Casting, Film, Movie Biz, News

Though she’s busy battling aliens in the new ABC drama V and will pop up again on Lost this season, Elizabeth Mitchell is carving out some time to shoot a movie too: She’ll star in the indie ensemble drama Answers to Nothing, EW.com has confirmed. In the film, which is set against the backdrop of a child abduction chase and focuses on lost Angelenos in search of redemption, Mitchell is a woman consumed by her desire to have a baby with her husband (Dane Cook).  “Playing a hormonal woman whose marriage is shaky and who has lost her way through her ultimate obsession—I love stuff like that. That’s where I live,” she tells EW.com, adding: “The movie is a little bit like Magnolia where you get this glimpse into people’s lives and it may not be exactly what you want to see, but it is accurate.” Currently shooting in Los Angeles, Answers to Nothing also stars Julie Benz, Barbara Hershey, Zach Gilford, Kali Hawk, Eric Palladino, Mark Kelly, Miranda Bailey, and singer Aja Volkman.  Matthew Leutwyler (Dead & Breakfast) is directing and co-writing the film, which is being produced by Ambush Entertainment (The Squid and the Whale).

Exclusive: 'As The World Turns' casts Paulina Porizkova

Categories: Casting, News, Television

Casting a former supermodel for a daytime soap appearance doesn’t exactly pack the same punch as James Franco doing General Hospital, but hey, CBS could do a heckuva lot worse than a Czech beauty: EW.com has learned exclusively that Paulina Porizkova will do a multi-episode arc on As the World Turns beginning Jan. 5. She will play a character named Clarissa who has a history with Simon Frasier (Paul Leyden).  ATWT averages 2.52 million viewers.
