Ratings: CBS wins the night, ABC comedies return with a bang

CBS may have won the evening with the celeb prank show I Get That a Lot and the 36th Annual People’s Choice Awards, but third-place ABC also has reason to celebrate. Modern Family scored its highest ratings in both total viewers and adults 18-49 since its premiere. It was the night’s top show among the latter, coveted demo. Cougar Town posted its highest numbers since mid-October, while the 8:30 p.m. episode of The Middle managed a series high in 18-49. Even though Ugly Betty, debuting in its new non-Friday time slot, couldn’t quite defeat Jay Leno, it did hit season highs in both 18-49 and total viewers.

Golden Globes 2010: 'Glee' star Lea Michele on her nomination

Among Glee’s TV-pack-leading four Golden Globe nominations this morning were actor nods for stars Matthew Morrison, who plays William McKinley High School’s glee club coach Will Schuester, Lea Michele, who plays glee club’s obnoxious-yet-talented singer Rachel Berry, and Jane Lynch, who plays Will’s nemesis, the bare-knuckle-competitive coach of the Cheerios (WMHS’s championship-winning cheerleading squad), Sue Sylvester.

We got the three stars on the phone today to ask about their red-hot new show and find out what it was like to be nominated for Globes just halfway through its first season. Read the Q&A with Michele below, then check out our interviews with Lynch and Morrison.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You got up at 5 a.m. to hear the nominations?
LEA MICHELE: I was just looking on my computer, and I couldn’t find anything. So then I decided to turn the TV on, and the minute I turned the TV on, the first name I heard was my name. It was crazy. I just couldn’t believe — and I still can’t believe — that I was nominated in the category that I’m in, with the caliber of actresses I’m amongst. It’s such an out-of-body experience, really. CBS won the ratings race Wednesday. Criminal Minds was the night’s most-watched program, followed by CSI: NY, which topped Barbara Walters’ annual countdown of the year’s most fascinating people in the 10 p.m. hour. Up against Fox’s fall finale of Glee, ABC’s Modern Family drew its biggest audience and top Adults 18-49 number since September. 'Sons of Anarchy' star Charlie Hunnam talks about his screenplay for 'Vlad' (sorry, no vampires)

Categories: Film, Movie Biz, News

Yes, Vlad the Impaler, a 15th century badass whose penchant for brutality and fighting at night were meant to strike fear in the heart of the Ottoman Empire and give his outnumbered forces an advantage on their home battlefield, was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. And yes, the Vlad screenplay, written by Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam, will be produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B and Summit Entertainment, the studio behind Twilight. But no, you will not be seeing vampires. In fact, that was a non-negotiable point for Hunnam, who became fascinated with Vlad, a national hero of Romania, when he spent five months traveling the country during downtime filming 2003’s Cold Mountain.

It wasn’t until Hunnam (who’d previously starred in the UK Queer as Folk, 2002’s Nicholas Nickleby, and Fox’s Judd Apatow series Undeclared) became frustrated with the sort of roles he was being offered that he finally sat down three years ago to write his first script. Development has been staggered — interrupted by both the writers’ strike and Hunnam’s casting as Jax on FX’s Anarchy, which just received a third season order — but this week comes news that in-demand music video director Anthony Mandler is in line to helm the film after wowing execs with a reel reminiscent of Zack Snyder’s 300. Here, Hunnam tells us about the film’s plot (he’s the hottest history teacher you’ll ever have) and who he’d love to see cast as Vlad (Colin Farrell or himself?). (Read full post)

'New Moon' premiere: On the scene with Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and inappropriate fan signs

Last night’s Los Angeles premiere of The Twilight Saga: New Moon brought out the film’s stars and the devoted fans, the latter holding signs that ranged from the comically desperate (“Team Whatever I Can Get”), to the sexual and age-inappropriate (“Jacob Black: I’d hit that with a Volvo”), to the self-aware (“Don’t judge me,” “Don’t stalk the Pattinson”). While Taylor Lautner skipped the print press line, Stewart and Pattinson, the latter of whom had no idea that Twihards had camped out in Westwood for four days to catch a glimpse of him, did their duty. “You can’t prepare for this,” Pattinson told us, unshaven in Gucci. “It is just insane. I don’t know how the Beatles felt but I imagine it was perhaps close to this. I think very few human beings will ever get to experience the same feelings and love we feel at Twilight events.” Stewart, who kept a safe distance from Pattinson on the red carpet in her Oscar de la Renta, said this is the night she works for: “The only reason you make movies is for people to see them and hopefully love them. I feel like doing interviews tonight at this is just boring. I would rather spend the time hanging out with the fans because I have done a hundred million interviews and they all know what I have to say.” (The film’s stars did spend time with the fans signing autographs. Kellan Lutz, who plays Emmett, went and collected his superfan, who apparently follows him everywhere and wears a shirt that says “Nutz for Lutz,” gave her a ticket, and walked her in past all the cameras. It was actually quite sweet.) Other highlights:

• Michael Sheen (Aro): “This is amazing and fantastic to see this sort of passion in young people. My own daughter loves the books and this is something we can share and talk about and connect on. People get so worked up. This feels like being part of a phenomenon. It feels like more than just doing a film. Although a lot of middle-aged women got pretty worked up about Frost/Nixon. You should have seen the signs they made for Frank Langella. We got sent a few pairs of underwear.”

• Peter Facinelli (Carlisle): “I think I can enjoy the chaos more this time because I expected it….Last time I stepped out of the limo on premiere night and was like, ‘Whoa.’ I was blown away by the screams. It was so intense. Now that I knew what to expect, I can just roll with it. This just does not happen very often. These kids are so supportive of the film. They even want my autograph and I am old enough to be their dad….I don’t envy what the main three have to go through everyday. That’s why Kellan and I held hands off the plane. If they want a circus, we’ll give them a circus. We were just having some fun. And by the way, we already broke up.”

• Alex Meraz (Paul): “I think guys won’t mind if their girlfriend drags them to a Twilight film this time because there is a very masculine side to this film. It brings a whole different level of excitement. The wolves are much more animalistic and raw and unrefined compared to the vampires in their fancy house with their nice cars. Vampires are older and more suave and mature. The shapeshifters are not. We are young, aggressive and have tons of testosterone and nudity. It will make for a more balanced date night movie selection. And even if guys don’t want to see it, if they want to see their girlfriends, they better go because that’s where their girls will be. And I feel like we are buttering up their girls with our abs so they could get lucky.”
