Box office: 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' crosses $200 million mark

After briefly slipping out of first place on Thanksgiving, The Twilight Saga: New Moon rose again on Friday with $17.9 million, bringing its total to $206.1 million. After just eight days in theaters, the sequel has already surpassed the $192.8 million earned last year by its predecessor during its entire theatrical run. Meanwhile, Sandra Bullock’s week-old football drama The Blind Side had its best day yet on Friday, raking in $16.2 million for a $76.3 million total. That beats the pace of Bullock’s summer hit The Proposal, which had only made $56.7 million of its eventual $164 million haul by its eighth day. Check back tomorrow for a full recap of the weekend box office.

Please don’t forget to show us the figures of your special New Moon magazines sales! I can’t wait! Team EW! (*sigh*)

  • Ellen

Wow who would have thought a Sandy Bullock drama would give the “hot” teens of NEW MOON such a run for their money.

    Go Sandy!

    VIDEO OF THE YEAR:

    • Trish

LOL, who would have thought that “G Force” would actually beat out HP6 during its second weekend.
      Strange things happen sometimes.
Nevertheless, it’s awesome that New Moon has made so much money. I believe it had the third best opening week in history.

      • Kira

G-force only made $170 million while HP6 went on to make 930 Million so I guess strange things do happen.

      • Kelsey

Harry Potter out-grossed G-Force worldwide by a whopping $717 million (and $180 million domestically). But yeah, we’re, like, so totally devastated about that first weekend in August. I bet you’re also one of those Twihards who boasts about Breaking Dawn “beating” Deathly Hallows when DH had already been out for three weeks.
If you’re going to insult HP, at least come up with something meaningful. That was just embarrassing.

    • Nick T

Wow Ellen, the Bad Romance is pretty random. But who cares, it’s Lady Gaga!

      • Michael

Enough of the Lady Ca Ca worship!
        Talk about overrated…..

    • Tina

Actually, according to Friday’s Box Office Mojo, The Blind Side is selling MORE tickets per screen than New Moon, but is playing is less theatres – therefore – The Blind Side is actually a bigger hit now than New Moon. Go Sandra Bullock! That’s showing ‘em how it’s done!

    • Amy

Go Sandy! Maybe this year is your Oscar year?!?

  • jon

  • SAM

Congrats to The Blind Side, one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. I’m not a Twilight fan, but New Moon is performing very well. Congrates Twilight fans.

  • graeme

    Sandra for the Oscar!

  • Annyong!

I can’t wait for the articles in a few years’ time that mocks the idea these horrible movies were even popular. It’ll be one of those “EW’s Guilty Pleasures” articles.

    • Michael

I hope you were meaning the Twilight saga crap.
Yeah, those will be good times in a couple if years.
      We can point and laugh.

  • Bradd Bradd

So EW is very biased (hahah shocker) New moon’s second friday was down a MASSIVE 75% from it’s first friday. It’s crashing in such a rate that it probably won’t top 285 at the end of its run, less than potter 6, even though the former had almost double the opening weekend. So adios new moon. It will have to settle for 3rd place of the year even though it had by FAR the biggest opening.
I’m so happy for Blind Side. I heard it’s fantastic, and word of mouth has obviously been amazing. It might break 100 mil by sunday, and it has a shot of breaking 200 mil by the end of it’s run. congrats

    • @Bradd

HP6’s opening “weekend” can’t be compared to New Moon’s. HP6 opened on a Wednesday, not a Friday. HP6 had like a $77 million “opening weekend,” but had already been out Wednesday and Thursday. For that five-day span, it actually had more than $150 million.
I’m also happy for The Blind Side. It really was a terrific film, and that’s getting lost in all the New Moon hooplah.

  • Grady

Wow, Blind Side is exceeding even my very high expectations:

New Moon is making it to $300 million easily. Blind Side is now pretty much guaranteeing itself $200 million. Old Dogs will earn $100 million, much to my chagrin. A Christmas Carol MIGHT make it to $200 million, but I highly doubt it.

  • ggny

welcome back to the A List Mrs Sandra Bullock…Back to Back 150mil+ movies

    • Rosalie

ggnv, Sandra Bullock did has not made a back to back 150 million movie yet! We still don’t know if The Blind side will gross that much. That aside, Sandra Bullock had another movie out this year called All About Steve which was a huge box office dissapointment, even though it also started Bradley Cooper who was also hot off The Hangover. Sandra is definetly an A lister, but most of her movies are hit or miss.

      • Lily

Actually, Rosalie, Sandra Bullock’s other movie this year was The Proposal which was a HUGE hit. The Proposal made $300 million at the Box Office. The Blind Side cost $29 million to make but has already made $76 million so really, this year, Sandra Bullock is pulling in hundreds of millions. Go Sandy! Maybe this year you’ll get the Oscar.

      • Me

Actually Lily, The Proposal came out in June and made $165 Domestically or $295 World wide. Rosalie said she had another movie, All About Steve, that came out in September and only made $33 million. So technically Rosalie is correct. She did not have back to back hit movies HOWEVER I do think that the Blind Side has a good shot at making $150 million. Even though she is A-List and she is one of my favorites, her movies have been hurting at the box office over the past few years.

      • Dick

        Actually shut up

  • Romantic Fool

The fallout with Twilight series is the non-stop saturation and made up b.s. in gossip magazines and Kristen Stewart’s offensive and crude behavior. Like Kristen has stated…”she is so not Bella”. The traditional, romantic and moralistic fan base reject her off screen so they are not as jazzed for her on screen. Right before Twilight opened, the pics of her huffing on a pipe were released by TMZ. Right before New Moon, Kristen announced F everyone, I was going to tell you but “we are, we aren’t I’m a lesbian”. If you want to know why the numbers are not as good as they could be….look no further than the parasitical gossip rags over-blown invasion of Rob and Kristen’s privacy and Kristen’s strange comments, appearance, interviews and interviews.

Can anyone recommend a new entertainment website for adults?

    • ger

      Please god

    • ANNYONG!

I tried but EW deleted it.
      That “ain’t cool”!!!

  • Nikki

I watched New Moon and The Blind Side and I liked both movies. In fact I was profoundly affected by The Blind Side. My point is–they are both great movies and it’s not a crime to like different movies. Ignorant minds may dictate otherwise but I will remain unaffected by the immature and hostile opinions of those who are obviously desperate for attention. As for the Lady Gaga video–as always she remains original…and there was actually a couple of times in the video where I thought she was very pretty–normally she wears the most hideous costumes and make-up which hides any real beauty. It was certainly entertaining to say the least.

  • Tone

Well said Nikki. You can get into a lot of different stuff, but it all comes down to the mentality of the viewer.

  • Heather2

I was actually kind of surprised tonight when I went to the theatre and it was packed out. I guess all the negative reviews are not effecting everyone’s opinions of NM. But I will say this. I hope that The Blind Side does well. I am a big fan of Sandra Bullock and that movie seems to be a really good one. :)

  • Urvy

When will we see robots kill Bella and Edward?
