Audiences looking for a feel-good family movie this Thanksgiving flocked to see Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side, which jumped to the number one spot with $9.5 million, according to Variety. That was enough to push Twilight: New Moon to second place, where it made $9.2 million for the day. But the vampire series is hardly dead at the box office: Its $14.3 million gross on Wednesday set a new record for the day before Thanksgiving, and the weekend will bring droves of younger viewers back to theaters. Meanwhile, new releases Ninja Assassin and the Robin Williams-John Travolta comedy Old Dogs performed modestly, taking in $4.6 million and $4.1 million respectively. Overall, the holidays are off to a happy start at the box office, with total grosses up 20 percent over last year.

Agree with you, Annyong. I’m a TWIhard, hafta say, and love the books and loved Catherine Hardwicke’s TWILIGHT, but I absolutely loathed NMoon. Think it’s the worst movie I’ve ever seen. No surprise that the box office is slipping. TWILIGHT had passion, emotion, romantic heat, a genius Carter Burwell score, and cool songs like Supermassive Black Hole for the baseball scene and Rob’s “Never Think” which is gorgeous. Unless Summit brings back Catherine Hardwicke for Breaking Dawn this franchise is doomed. I don’t want to see Eclipse now, and will never see NMoon again. But I can watch my TWILIGHT DVD repeatedly. I know there are millions of fans around the world who feel like this so I hope Summit hears us and brings back the brilliant Catherine Hardwicke.

New Moon is a MUCH better movie. The cinematography was absolutely breathtaking, the tone was spot on (it’s a sad time, not a happy, shiny time in Bella’s life), the plot was faithful to the book and the actors delivered performances that were much more sincere than in Twilight. When I first saw Twilight, I was sooo disappointed in how it had been hacked beyond recognition. Several of the scenes were so horribly executed that they ended up being laughable.
Compared to Twilight, New Moon looks like Gone With the Wind.

Of course ti will take a big drop this weekend. It made 142 million. A 60 percent drop means it will make 56 million, which is more than most summer movies open at. The first movie made 1000% gross from profit. New Moon is already at 400% after one week. Whether you like it or not, this will be one of the most profitable film franchises of all time.
Exactly. After a huge opening like that, there’s no way the numbers won’t go down. It’ll still continue to do well in the weeks to come. Also the difference in viewers isn’t that large. It’s not like “The Blind Side” is killing NM at the box office, and it only beat NM on Thanksgiving day. When all is said and done, which movie is going to make more money?

Most profitable franchise? Really??? Do you not understand how much money the Potter franchise has brought in and then you have James Bond, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, Pirates, Batman, Spider-man, and then Shrek all above 2 billion dollars. Each Twilight film would have to raise 500million and that is just to become the 9th. To get the top spot the movies would have to make $1,353,102,733.25 to match the first 6 Potter films alone. Let me know when that happens!
“Most profitable” considers box office and other media stream grosses relative to movie budget (production, post, P&A, etc.). New Moon probably cost about $75 million but but should rake in $550 worldwide at the box office, plus scads more from DVD sales, etc. The other movies in teh franchise, together with this should perform, on average, similarly. Therefore: a VERY profitable series relative to the ones you mentioned which often have $250-$350 million in costs PER MOVIE.
I saw the Blind Side. It’s an excellent movie. Definitely worth my money. I’m happy it was number one. I’m not surprised considering it’s pretty intense football weekend. ROLL TIDE!

she also had a really terrible movie that no one watched. so one good movie (Blind SIde, pretty great movie), one bad movie (All About Steve, pretty awful movie), one mediocre movie (The Proposal, better than expected and maybe worth a watch, but overall formulaic). Zero romance, zero heat, zero suspense, the Volturi were a comedy act, Taylor was wonderful but the script, reddish/pink design, choppy scenes & muzak were all horrible. That’s the point. Fans of the series went to see it last weekend, but the rest of sane-headed people who aren’t fans didn’t. While some fans may go see it again this weekend, it’s going to see a big drop in profit, whether you Twihards like it or not.

As for the box office, it doesn’t matter if it plummets this weekend; the film cost 50 million and in two weeks alone will have surpassed 250 million dollars (in the USA alone)…300 million is a lock, and Summit is very happy that the films has surpassed everyone’s expectations.

These movies and books are absolute drivel but you can not doubt the popularity and success that they have had.

I don’t know about all the teens but I went and saw New Moon for the second time with my mom (i’m 34 and she’s 54) and we were the average age there, I didn’t see alot of teens and the theater was packed. I’m hardly a twi-hard or whatever but I do enjoy a good story.
I went with my husband and there were hardly any teenage girls there. Actually there were more men then women at the theater I went to. We the audience enjoyed the movie.
First off, I want to say that I am not a Twilight fan. Watching the first movie was a painful experience for me. But I have to give New Moon props for what its accomplished so far at the box office.
It makes sense that New Moon wouldn’t do as well on Thanksgiving Day. That’s a day for families, not for hanging out with your girlfriends and going to the movies. Honestly, I have been surprised by how well New Moon did during the week. It will probably end up between 45-50 million for its second weekend. That about a 65% drop. It’s a big drop but not unheard of for blockbusters. A total box office of about 230 million after ten days isn’t bad!!
Althought I am not a fan of the Twilight series, I don’t begrudge it the success it has earned. However, the story for me is that Old Dogs isn’t a big hit as expected. I have to say I’m pleased that audiences have decided that by-the-numbers comedies like this aren’t wanted at the multiplex.

I agree with some of the posters. I’m no Twilight fan, I’ve never seen the movies nor read the books and I don’t intend to. Of course I don’t believe this story has any substance, but coming on here to insult people who are fans of it is just plain pathetic. There are much worse things that people like, and there are much worse movies that get made but still manage to be hits. Yes, the Twilight saga is made for the fans, but so many movies are made because they know stupid people will go see them. Example: horrible scary movie franchises.
I’m also not a fan of the series, but I agree that people who come on here just to insult others is pathetic.
