'New Moon' director Chris Weitz's next movie: The anti-'Twilight'

Categories: Film, New Moon, News

Chris Weitz wants to get as far away from fantasy as possible. So for his next project, the New Moon director is turning his attention to The Gardener, a drama about a Mexican yardworker. “There’s no special effects. It’s just people talking to each other,” Weitz tells EW. The script comes from Eric Eason (Manito) and centers on a single father who has a chance to strike out on his own by buying his boss’ truck. Weitz hasn’t begun casting yet, but plans to reunite with New Moon cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe and its studio Summit Entertainment. “I still feel like I haven’t shown everything I can do,” says Weitz, who hopes to begin filming in Los Angeles as early as March or April 2010. “The one that will let me rest is still out there. I think it might be The Gardener.”

they are letting him direct another movie? i don’t care how much new moon made — it sucked (and not in a good way!)

lets hope thier are no CGI animals in Mexico for him to ruin… i’m not made about twilight, more so the golden compass! Those books are awesome and he made a mess out of it!

he also said he didnt have all the controll while making the golden compass, and wasnt allowed by the studio to do what he wanted, so the movie was never made the way he visually saw it. this time he had the controll and i think he made a perfectlty fine movie(its not one of the movies you have to see b4 you die, lets be honest)

Totally agree, Kate. NMoon was ghastly – awful – whereas TWILIGHT was magical. I read a reviewer compare the CGI wolves in NMoon to the Disney Country Bears Jamboree and hafta say, I agree. Plus, the Edward apparitions were so lame it looked like a ’50s movie. Sorry, Mr. Weitz. I’m sure you’re a nice person but you just didn’t get the TWILIGHT world at all. I hope Summit brings back Catherine Hardwicke for Breaking Dawn or else I won’t see it. Catherine created this amazing, supernatural world and only she can restore it to the enchantment it so desperately needs.

      BRING BACK CATHERINE HARDWICKE!!!!!!!!!

dudee…i don’t care if u didn’t like new moon the article is about the director and even if u guys hate or love the twilight saga he is an awesome director and he knows what he’s doing! he knows his director stuff!!
to thumps way up high in the sky for him!!

It’s OK, fill the movie with good-looking young guys who take their shirts off regularly and the tweens and wish-we-were-still-tweens will pour $140 million into opening weekend for that one as well.

    • Andrea

It’s unfair to “blame” him for the shirtlessness…he was just following the book. He actually did an excellent job adapting the novel. How you feel about said novel is unrelated to his merits as a director.

      • whatever

you mean we can blame him for the waxed chests either? nothing in the book says the wolves have a 6 pack.

  • Geo

He is actually a pretty good director, when he goes easy.

i just have to say that chris weitz made “about a boy” some years back, (before twilight) and he did a GREAT JOB. it’s one of the best movie adaptations of a book ever(In my openion) i also thought than new moon was 10 times better than chatrine hardwicks blue/gray tintet crap. visually new moon was so much easier on the eyes(and im not talking bout the nekkid guys)

    • Sarah

Oh yes, I love About a Boy. He and Paul did an excellent job.

And I also have to agree that Chris did an infinitely better job with New Moon than Catherine Hardwicke did with Twilight.

  • mishka

Oh my God, I went to see New Moon, how hard was it to keep my eyes open! The movie is just, well, boring! At least Hardwicke succeeded in making us believe in that endless love between Bella and Edward. Okay, the photography and the visual effects are way better in New Moon but in the end, the Twilight story stills more credible.

    • rush

that’s cuz this particular book is hard to adapt. it’s all about the internal struggle, hard to convey the internal onto the screen. hardwick changed some of the story to make it more intresting, while weitz stayed as true to the book as he possibly could….

      • Aishwarya

You are kidding me right? There is no struggle in the book.. Bella just gives up without her “man vamp” and the rest is about how she mistreats all her friends and is selfish and tries to commit suicide. Nice message to send out to girls all over the world. I am against censorship but I would censor this book only for its bad writing…lol

Summer.. buzz off! Now, on to Chris Weitz. Chris, you did a fantastic job with the script you were given. It is a sad story you had to tell, and you told it perfectly, including a bit of humor! I thought the movie was great, and I loved the colors. The only negative- pirate music for the Jacob/Paul fight scene. Music is supposed to quietly blend in the background, and this music was way too loud and “piratey” for the scene. It took me out of the movie. That’s about the only complaint I have. Congrats on telling the story Stephenie Meyer wrote. You advanced the story told in Book 2 in a beautiful way. Thanks!

Mr. Weitz — I thought you did a fantastic job with New Moon.

  • grayce

Wow, you people are just so mean. I wonder how badly you are criticized at your own place of buisness to be so harsh about someone else’s work.

  • piperpalinsleftshoe

i agree with kate. someone’s gonna let him direct another movie? peter jackson must be in new zealand tweeting about those glowing eyes in the forest.
