Taylor Lautner at New York 'New Moon' premiere: 'Werewolves are sexier'

Categories: Film, New Moon, Twilight

Taylor Lautner was loyal to his wolfpack at the New York premiere of New Moon on Thursday night. Asked if vampires or werewolves were sexier, Lautner told EW: “That’s a hard question. They’re sexier in different ways. But, I mean, I’ll stay true to the pack. I’ll go werewolf.” Score one for Team Jacob.

Lautner — and his co-stars including Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Nikki Reed, Ashley Greene and Kellan Lutz — continued the promotional whirlwind for New Moon at a Big Apple screening hosted by The Cinema Society and D&G. The stars might have been relieved that the New York event didn’t reach the fan frenzy of the Los Angeles premiere on Monday night — this low-key event was under the radar of most Twihards, attracting about 100 fans who stood patiently in the drizzling rain on Houston Street at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema. Notable audience members included Natalie Portman, Gossip Girl’s Jessica Szohr and Taylor Momsen, Howard Stern, Agyness Deyn, and Patrick Wilson.

Lautner told us that he was happy to see Jacob’s role expanded in the sequel. “It was really exciting for me that Jacob has the opportunity to develop his relationship with Bella in this movie,” he said. “Really it’s setting up this entire series, which is this love triangle. So it was great to have them develop their relationship.” That also meant more bonding time on the New Moon set with Kristen Stewart. “Kristen and I have a very similar relationship to Jacob and Bella. We’re very open and honest with each other, we can tell each other things.”

The pair probably won’t be sharing a row in your local cinema on Friday, though. Stewart was asked if she would be checking out release-day frenzy at a theater. “No!,” she said emphatically. But she did sound appreciative of all the attention directed at her character, Bella. “I think Bella is a really good role model. To be able to play her is just a serious honor.”

Robert Pattinson had a guy’s guy approach when asked about how he chooses which suits to wear to his appearances. “I don’t know, I just see which one fits and see which one looks alright I guess,” the unshaven actor said.

Director Chris Weitz joked that he had a hard time with the paparazzi. “They’re after me all the time. They just want pictures of me holding Rob’s hand,” he said with a laugh.

On a more serious note, it sounded like the director has had his fill of vampires for a while. “I think I’m all out of vampire at the moment so I haven’t been approached with other vampire movies. Everyone out there is welcome to not approach me with more vampire movies,” Weitz told EW.

Ma and Pa Cullen also spoke to us about how New Moon is a much different film than Twilight. “Twilight was like a 30-35 million dollar movie which is not cheap. But for sure, it feels a little more studio-based, this movie. It feels a little crisper, a little more epic,” Peter Facinelli (Dr. Carlisle Cullen) said. “I liked the intimate feel of [Twilight] but I think that for New Moon this works better…Chris Weitz did a fantastic job with the special effects.”

Elizabeth Reaser (Esme Cullen) agreed there was a “huge difference” between Twilight and New Moon. “I thought the first one was kind of big and crazy, and this is just different. It’s a whole other level.” – Reporting by Jean Bentley

This whole thing is just a bit overdone in the press much? geez…

    • Celia

I agree and another one is coming out in just 7 months. It’s way overdone. Even the little 12 year old girls will be tired of it by then. But I’m so sick of it now…even David Letterman was talking about tonight…depressing.

      • @Celia

At this point I wish the last two would come out sooner rather than later, so the whole thing can be over, done with, forgotten, and consigned to the cultural dustbin where it belongs.
That EW has devoted such slavish attention to this — a glorified Harlequin romance — is embarrassing for what is allegedly a respectable entertainment news outlet. Yes, we get it, the films are popular and deserve coverage. They do not deserve eight non-news “updates” a day and a magazine cover every other month.

      • Celia

I completely agree. I just really wish it would end already. Try as I might to ignore it, it’s almost impossible. I’m seriously ashamed. If you’re going to devote so much attention and publicity to a book or film, then please let it be one that actually deserves it. EW definitely used to be legitimate and now they’ve completely sold out. It’s really disgusting.

      • @Celia

Exactly. It’d be one thing if the books or films were actually good. I have no problems with coverage of Glee, Mad Men, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Batman, etc. because those things actually contribute SOMETHING to popular culture. Take out the vampire/werewolf gimmick, and Twilight is no better than a $5 trashy romance paperback.
The books are worse than what comes out of a freshman creative-writing workshop, and New Moon is getting some extremely unflattering reviews. Yet we’re supposed to believe that THIS is as good as pop culture gets now? Good lord.

      • Kristin

Ok, one have the people that has been bashing the book actually read the books? Ten times better than the movie. Two, yeah, if you take the vampire and werewolf your just left with a romance, but your left with nothing if you take the witchcraft out of harry potter , same with the lord of the rings.. hello think about what you writing before you write it please. If you dont like the series fine, but stop bashing the people who actually do!

  • Good God

This piece of over-hyped trash is getting slammed by most sane critics (it’s at like 28% on Rotten Tomatoes, the review aggregate site), and you guys ignore this other aspect of it and post the 30th non-story about Taylor Lautner?
I think the main story here is, “Summit releases garbage and no one says anything about it!” It’s the elephant in the room.

    • Linda

Well it’s OBVIOUS we were all dyingggg to see Lautner’s effed up face grace the pages of EW once again…

      • Talar Boyadjian

Hey!!!! His face is NOT ‘effed up’ lol its veryyyyy beautiful :) )

    • brittany

just because you have no class and can not appreciate the value of the twilight saga does not mean that you have to ruin the whole freakin thing for the millions of twi-hards like myself. there are way mor people that like twilight than dont

      • Ali

Value? Really? Please. I gave the series a chance. I read Twilight. I got 100 pages into New Moon(quitting now) and there is absolutely zero value. Mindless garbage. There is no substance! It’s fine that you enjoy the series, but please don’t pretend it holds “value”

      • Ali

Oh and Brittany, I find it a teensy bit hard to believe there are more Twilight fans than non. In fact, that’s probably the most far off piece of information I’ve seen on a forum like this.

  • Sabrina

    The question is:

    Who the motherbleep cares????

    • Alli

Seriously! I am a Twilight fan but ENOUGH. I feel like I need to just see this freaking movie so I can movie on with my life. I feel bad for the cast because all this overexposure is making people sick of them.
And that Lady Gaga video is freaking awesome. I am going to watch it now.

  • Mato

Yeah, waliking around a forrest wearing only tight denim shorts with a bunch of dudes. Someone should have asked him if werewolves were more homoerotic than vampires.

  • Tara

Each to their own guys!! I think the movie was fantastic and cant wait for the next one!!

  • ???

    All y’all are haterz

    • Fern

I know right! The world is just wating to hate and complain about something. Lighten up guys!

      • Ali

I wouldn’t be hatin’ on it if it weren’t plastered all over every piece of media in America.

  • Kitty

Absolutely excellent! Jacob is absolutely sexy in this movie! But Edward is still number 1!

  • Rachel

I am a mother of 1 and 35 years old and LOVE the twilight series. It is no more overhyped than Harry potter ,Star Wars, or Star Trek

    • Except…

Except that Star Trek, Star Wars and Harry Potter have demonstrated staying power for years, even decades. Will anyone remember or care about Twilight in 10 years? I doubt it.

      • Reality

Harry Potter is also eurasian junk, just like Twilight. Taylor Lautner is a eurasian actor, NOT an actual American. This is why Twilight never sold in America and the Americans have never even heard of the fucking thing. No different than the others.

      • BilbrosB4Hos

WTF are you talking about??? You are nuts.

      • JackBauerEnthusiast!

No they won’t remember it. I can’t even remember it and I just read the books a year ago. It’s forgettable. It has no substance like Harry Potter, LOTR, and yes even Star Wars.

  • michelle

awww come on! we all had our preteen obsessions that our parents would go through because it is all a part off growing up. Twilight and its series is a really good movie. Everyone is so ready for this to be “over with”. there was just this thing called harry potter…that all you critizing probably were all gaga over. I am a proud mom of a daughter that whose eyes lit up when I brought home the tickets for Saturdays viewing of New Moon. I personally can’t wait to see the next 3 movies!

  • Reality

Harry Potter is also eurasian junk, just like Twilight. Taylor Lautner is a eurasian actor, NOT an actual American. This is why Twilight never sold in America and the Americans have never even heard of the thing. This is no different than the other mentioned series. Like the way 2012 was made by germans and NOT by Americans and was never even seen in America.

    • mia

You are a disturbed individual. Twilight didn’t sell in America?? Are you high??

That said, I’m looking forward to seeing this movie tonight.

      • C

Maybe it was seen in NYLA at some time, maybe but doubtful, but it didn’t even play there. Americans haven’t heard anything about it for an obvious reason. You sound like a eurasian troll trying to push this unknown movie and books over the internet.

    • mia

      LMFAO…troll.

  • Nicole

Taylor is so hot in this movie with his short hair. I think for a fact that New Moon will be one hundred times better than Twilight because Jacob takes his shirt off and we get to see his perfect chest that is so hot.

    • K

No offense, but you need to get laid.

  • Jenna

I dont think the press are over doing it at all! People are interested in this, so people are going to read articles about it. The twilight epic is HUGE and it deserves all the press it recieves, and more even.

  • Kate

The publicity may be a bit overdone, but as a huge fan I can’t get enough of it. If I wasn’t I can see being sick of it, but I really can’t relate. I saw the film last night and loved it! The theatre was crazy of screaming girls, myself included, but since we all feel the same way about it I felt like I was watching the film with 300 of my friends.

  • mary

Saw a special screening of the movie and it was great!

  • kate

    i watched new moon….and that’s my impression…

watching a group of shirtless guys really irritated me and i wanted to shout ” guys, can you just put your t-shirts on!” all
i can say about taylor in this movie is his fine body-and that’s sad…honestly, i expected more from the wolf-pack and him

volturi did a great job i think…dakota and michael totally rocked!

victoria and laurent disappointed me…i thought their scenes would have been scarier…but i laughed in some of them..that’s not good

as for Robert and Kristen…In my opinion, they managed to portray the tragedy of this story for sure..well-done!!!..Robert was the perfect Edward (like i imagined when i was reading the book)…he showed all the emotions – joyness, grief, loss, fury, love etc. The scenes in Brazil, in Italy and break-up scene are my favourite…the end is also good-after it i really want to watch eclipse!!! the audience applauded..the movie is great..but something is wrong…why does the most dramatic book turn into the movie where are so many jokes???

you can criticize me….but it’s my opinion

    • BilbrosB4Hos

Thanks for the review, it was much more in depth than EW’s review!
