It may be only the first week of November, but Disney’s A Christmas Carol got the holiday season started by spiriting $31 million at the box office, according to early estimates by Hollywood.com Box Office. The $175 million animated movie, which utilized performance-capture technology to allow Jim Carrey to play multiple roles from Charles Dickens’ beloved story, represented the best opening in director Robert Zemeckis’ career. And even though Carol performed a bit below expectations, the family film should hold up well in the coming weeks, especially since it’ll be playing on nearly 200 pricey IMAX screens until Avatar opens on Dec. 18.
The concert documentary Michael Jackson’s This Is It dropped only 40 percent in its second weekend, sliding into second place with $14 million. Not far behind was the new George Clooney comedy The Men Who Stare at Goats. Unlike the Chicago Cubs, the movie managed to escape the Curse of the Billy Goat for a weekend total of $13.3 million. The Milla Jovovich alien-abduction film The Fourth Kind debuted in, appropriately enough, fourth place with $12.5 million, while the box-office phenomenon of the season, Paranormal Activity, recorded $8.6 million—good enough for fifth place. Activity, which reportedly cost only $11,000 to produce, has now grossed $97.4 million domestically. Such success is not in store for the Cameron Diaz horror flick The Box, which debuted in sixth place with $7.9 million and managed to garner a rare “F” grade from CinemaScore moviegoers.
The most newsworthy box-office story of the weekend was the record-breaking opening for Precious, the Oprah-endorsed and Sundance-winning drama starring Mo’Nique, Mariah Carey, and newcomer Gabourey Sidibe. On only 18 screens, Precious grossed $1.8 million for a per-screen average of $100,000—the largest per-screen average ever for a movie opening in more than 10 theaters. With many Oscar prognosticators—including EW’s Dave Karger—calling the film one of the front-runners of the awards season, Precious has an undoubtedly bright future in store as it gradually expands into additional markets throughout November.

This may be a newbie question, but how can limited release movies like Precious make such a high per-screen average? $100K per theatre? Assuming the theatres hold 1000 people max, it works out to about $100 per ticket – but I have never heard of tickets costing that. Can anybody shed any light on this?
That’s $100,000 per theater over 3 days, and with multiple showtimes at each theater.
I saw it and paid the regular price – but the theater was PACKED and from what I heard it was sold out all over town (I live in LA)
Obviously, there are multiple showings on each “screen” throughout the period being measured.

Forrest Gump is a masterpiece and deserved the Best Picture Oscar. Few other films are imbued with such magic and hope. Plus, Tom Hanks gave a brilliant performance. Can you imagine any other actor who would’ve played Forrest so well?

I still like movies that entertain me. How can a movie like PRECIOUS entertain. I can see stuff like this on reality nTV. And how can Oprah and Tyler be exec producers when they had nothing to do with the film. More hype to get Oscar attention.
Part of successfully producing a film – especially an indie – is getting into festivals, securing distribution, getting advertising funds, etc – none of which is guaranteed. So while Oprah and Tyler Perry may not have helped get the movie physically made, their connections, know-how, and, yes, their names have helped the movie reach the audience it is now reaching. Or, in other words, they HAVE helped make the movie into what it is now becoming. And when you say “How can a movie like PRECIOUS entertain. I can see stuff like this on reality nTV [sic],” do you mean to call into question the essential worth of drama? That’s sort of what that sounds like.
The only thing that I would add to your excellent response is that stories and drama have always functioned as more than entertainment. Enlightenment and insight into the human condition are what make a story resonate.
Precious is a deeply moving film, though maybe not “enetertaining” it is infinitely more worthwhile than most of the “entertaining” crap that gets released.

Saw Precious this weekend. The audience was pretty mainstream and while it was “gritty”, the were alot more light moments than I expected.

Also not seeing Precious because Oprah and Tyler Perry are involved. As for a “A Christmas Carol” I might see it in December a week before Christmas if it’s still out. Other than that I don’t understand releasing it the second week of November, a full two weeks before even freakin Thanksgiving. Brilliant move, Disney.
Precious will be the big surprise hit of the year. Oprah and Tyler Perry had nothing to do with the making of Precious. They just loved the movie and backed it AFTER it was made so it could actually get RELEASED in theatres. I could understand if they were IN the movie or were directly involved, but they aren’t. Personally, I am counting down the days until Precious comes out.
A Christmas Carol will end up making millions of dollars from this pint into the near year. That was definitely a brilliant move by Disney.
We saw Christmas Carol on Friday and it was absolutely wonderful. I plan on going again and taking my grandsons. Excellent movie!!

Precious was made as an indie film by director Lee Daniels. It showed at last year’s Sundance film festival, where it won the audience award. Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry were then shown the film by it’s director. Concerned that the film may not receive the distribution and audience they felt it deserved, both Winfrey and Perry lent their names (free of charge/producer’s fees) to the film to help secure better distribution and attention/promotion to the project. As far as I understand it, that is how they are involved.
If it was jewish hollywood insiders backing the film everyone would RUN to see it. But because it’s a highly successful and rich black woman backing the film and helping it get distributed it’s a problem.

Glad to see Men Who Stare At Goats do solid business. While definitely not a perfect film, it is definitely a solid and bizarre entry into the comedy genre. Speaks to current and past generations in certain terms and succeeds at generating laughs.

Everyone has their opinions on movies. Some like it and some don’t. Comments about movies should not lead to racism and vulgar words. It has nothing to do with anyone backing any movies. Movies are just movies and they are made to entertain people whether you like it or not. For instance, I never like drama but I like horror..that was why I truly enoyed the Box and Paranormal Activity. I like action movies as well but I keep my opinion about drama movies as there are so many people who will like it.
Took the kids to see Christmas Carol…while not my favorite version of the story, it is a GREAT way to introduce a younger audience to this wonderful story. As for all the other films this weekend…MJ will make money because that’s what dead celebrities do. Goats and UFO’s also make money(although the goats were helped by Clooney0 and Precious deserves to be judged by the story and performances, NOT by those who produced it.

Can we please stop talking about GD MJ please? I mean all we heard about this guy for the last 20 yrs is how he likes little boys and thathe had some sort of body dismorphic disorder along with a skin-pigment disease, a f-ing freak to say the least. then he dies and its suddenly MJ was the greatest…did I miss something here? I mean I was a fan along w everyone else, but c’mon 1988’s Bad was his last album worth a crap, he was great in his day, but his day has long since passed people.
Most of the Christmas line-up of movies this season is crap again. Why doesn’t Hollywood get it. I would love to take my family to movies…none to choose from. That is sad. We will watch our DVDS.
saw A Christmas Carol – and it was AWFUL – the colors are very drab, the characters speak in with a proper british, the background characters are poorly animated – while the movie might have had some artistic merit, it tried to hard (hissing candle with a face for the ghost of christmas past? Jim Carrey’s over-developed chest hair for the ghost of christmas present).
Also – this is too scarry for kids under 9 or 10, especially since there is no mitigating goodness for them to like.
