Yeah, I'm not too sure why the writer is so surprised either. Based on the World Series ratings and that almost the whole country watches football, why wouldn't the producers want to present the trailor for a hotly anticipated and very expensive movie during those times? Surely there must be some sci-fi/Cameron fans out there. Oh, and the movie still looks cheesy and boring, but we'll see.

I love Jim and I love sci-fi, but I'm just not excited about this movie. Maybe it was the 2+ years of hype. When I saw the first teaser, I thought, "This is what I've been waiting on?" After the second trailer, I'm still unimpressed. The plot seems cliche, I see nods to his past films in characters and scenes, and the effects look too cartoonish from the aliens to the landscapes to the human vehicles. I thought these advancements in film technology he's been working on were supposed to deliver a more realistic art design, not one that seems like Saturday morning fare. My fellow geeks agree. Nobody seems very psyched about "Avatar." Oh well, we'll still go see it because Cameron has never let us down.

Based upon the tone of your question I am assuming that you believe all sports fans to be mindless consumers that wont be interested in a sci-fi movie that would challenge their intellect. Don't be so relient on stereotypes my friend. I am a sports enthusiast that is PUMPED for the action in this movie and the political undertones that it is going to offer. Even if some of the special effects look straight out of an Nintendo 64 video game, it will still rock!

Well clearly they thought the imagery alone would be enough to entice people. But they didn't realize that without any context or dialogue, all people would do was pick apart the CGI aliens.
Thankfully, now that we see them talking and interacting, the Nav'i seem a lot more believable to me.
Or at least as believable as blue aliens with big cartoonish eyes can possibly be. lol
