Ratings: 'Dancing With the Stars' waltzes away with another win, 'Gossip Girl' dips

ABC’s Dancing with the Stars once again won the night in total viewers, according to preliminary overnight ratings (Note: Fox’s line-up was affected by a baseball game overrun and true program ratings won’t be available until later today). Dancing averaged 16.5 million viewers for the night. Meanwhile, CBS’ comedy The Big Bang Theory is emerging as a major ratings player in its new, cushy, post-Two and a Half Men time slot. Theory saw 13.1 million viewers last night, a slight dip of 700,000 from its hit lead-in. In less happy news, The CW’s Gossip Girl saw its ratings dip below 2 million viewers last night.

EW I have a suggestion. Instead of recapping Jon and Kate make me sick, how about recapping a show people watch like HIMYM or Lie To Me?

    • js

I agree, why continue to give these people free press. Please cover a show that has real ratings.

    • Cait

      Agreed. x1000

    • Lee

I still have yet to see EW recap FlashForward. How about that one too?

    • lauren

So sick of hearing Jate- would love to see flash foward recap instead of crap! & i really dont get the DWTS obsession!

      • Emma

Can you recap Trauma and give it a real shot at surviving? It’s a terrific show but you never mention it and NBC hardly ever promotes it so now it might end up on the chopping block. Where is the justice in that?

  • Jill

Why isn’t MNF on here? Or baseball playoffs? We watched those more than anything.
I still can’t believe that many people are watching DWTS.

    • Ama

MNF is on cable. I don’t know why baseball is not here. May be because of the time difference the Fox schedule was preempted in some cities but not in others.

    • AmyK

Jill, these ratings are only for broadcast networks. MNF and baseball playoffs were on ESPN and TBS last night. There are separate ratings charts for cable.

      • Jill

        Thanks for explaining.

  • Ama

Big bang theory wins the night in Adults 18-49. It has beat Two and a Half Men in that demo all season. Definitely the hottest comedy on TV.

  • Emma

I’m glad to see Lie to me is doing well. And way to go BBT!!!

  • Curt

I’m not sure what part of the country these ratings were drawn from, but in the MidWest we didn’t get “House” until almost 8PM thanks to the ridiculously long baseball game. Which makes me wonder why, especially in light of how many dedicated sports channels there are on digital cable (On Cox there are dozens!) why Fox feels the need to mess up programming for those of us who care nothing about sports!?! I mean seiously, come on, not everyone watches sports, and if they do, they have a plethora of other channels to watch it on. How many channels did I have to watch “House” and “Lie To Me?” NONE because sports messed it up.

Welcome to my world on the East Coast, where stupid football overruns RUIN every Sunday night on CBS.

    • t3hdow

I don’t so much mind football overrun, since I actually like football and don’t care for CBS’s boring Sunday programming (Cold Case, Three Rivers…who gives a crap?).
However, Fox pre-empting two-three weeks of Mon.-Thur. shows during the fall bugs me a lot more. It seems counter productive for new shows, struggling to build an audience. It was worse last night, because Fox assumed the baseball game would end a little after 6 PM CST but ended close to 8. Ah well.
From Curt’s tone of voice, you think Fox didn’t air anything. At least House and Lie To Me still aired, and Fox’s lack of 9 PM time slot gives the station more breathing room than CBS. I’m sure Fox execs didn’t expect the overrun, but they should’ve been more considerate to regular primetime viewers when airing championship baseball games prior to their primetime shows.

No matter CW producers say about people watching the show on itunes, Gossip girl is diving irremediabily. Ouch!

  • erin

keep it up castle!! love this show!

  • Rob

NBC sucks on Monday, I’m not shocked they can’t compete on Mondays with the like of HIMYM, House, Dancing and Big Bang. Put Chuck back on Mondays!

    • steve

Chuck wouldnt stand much of a chance against those shows either. Putting it on monday sounds like a good way to get cancelled quick. Put it on tuesdays.

      • Sarah

Agreed. Chuck did not fare well on Mondays last year. Put it on Tuesdays, please.

  • Fatima

Oh Gossip Girl. I worry now. It was back to fighting weight last night too.

  • Big D

    1) Awesome to see that BBT is finally getting the ratings it deserves!! 2) I think I am going to give Lie to Me another shot.

  • Samantha

Dancing with the stars is a very good/fun show to watch. Its going to comeback in 2010.

  • Noelle

    Oh no! gossip girl!
    Please make it through!

  • violet

It’s amazing how One Tree Hill still rates better than Gossip even with the change in line-up! A 7 years old show has CW biggest rating!
