Ratings: 'Lie to Me' and 'Trauma' both premiere to weak numbers

One returning and one new series premiered last night with decidedly disappointing results. Fox’s Lie to Me kicked off its second season with 7.7 million viewers, a sharp drop from the 14.5 million who watched lead-in House. Elsewhere, NBC debuted its new drama Trauma, but the first episode only drew a weak 6.9 million viewers. The one silver lining is that it managed to improve upon its lead-in, Heroes, by over a million viewers.

Put Heroes out of its misery. And Big Bang Theory held well to its lead audience!

    • Kim from Texas

I always wondered why they don’t put Two and a Half Men at 8 pm since it has the best ratings. Wouldn’t it help the ratings for their whole night?

      • Ginny

I always wondered why people watch Two and Half Men. I find it almost insipid. I cannot sit through 30 seconds of it, much less 30 minutes. Oh well, to each his own I guess. A lot of people probably aren’t big fans of Private Practice (which for some reason I actually almost enjoy!).

    • Bobby

Yeah,Heroes just keeps getting worse and worse each week.I’m this close to not watching it anymore but I’ve invested so much time watching it from the very beginning.I wish it would just get cancelled so that I don’t have to keep holding on to hope that it gets better.

      • Fargo

I watched the first episode of Heroes & promised myself I’d watch 3 more episodes before abandoning it. Last Monday came and I couldn’t make myself do it. I am officially done with that show.

      • Angela

Can you please put Heros’ out of it misery and bring back Chuck already? I tried Heros last season and gave up on it halfway through the the second half. I need my Chuck back before March.

  • 3rdrocker

How about for those who just have to watch Men and Big Bang…DVR those and watch Lie To Me live!!! It’s an amazingly brilliant show that deserves better ratings!

  • Christina

Trauma was a heaping pile of you know what. It will be cancelled by Christmas!

    • Fargo

Trauma is Third Watch. It’s already been done, and done better.

    • tvfan

Trauma is not even a good medical drama. It managed to be boring after the opening helicopter crash.

  • John

Jay Leno did even worse than Heroes! AWESOME!

    • Kim from Texas

Yes, clearly Jay Leno was much more profitable for the same rating.

    • Kim from Texas

I like the show “Lie to Me”, but it has a horrible timeslot! I watch the comedies on CBS and “Dancing with the Stars”. I would watch “Lie to Me” if it was on another night.

      • Fargo

Amen. Lie to Me is must see TV for me.

      • tvfan

Lie to Me should be on a different night, if they keep it — they may move it.

      • Rosella

Lie to Me should go back to being on Wednesdays. I love the show, and I hate that Fox moved it. It’s competing against Two and a Half Men, the #1 comedy. Lie to Me won’t get its deserved ratings due to its new timeslot, which is a shame.

  • znachki

I think Castle gained viewers over last week – good sign.

  • CJ

At least Castle kept decent numbers. Maybe Nathan Fillion will have a show that’ll last for a while like he so very much deserves.

  • Jackie

Lie To Me’s numbers are pretty good for Fox though, aren’t they?

    • Daniel

Compare to House, on the hour before. Lie to Me dropped 6 million viewers. That’s a significant drop, IMO.

  • meesh1

I enjoyed Trauma. Good acting; good backstory for the characters. Unless the network can promote it better (the promos didn’t characterize it well)….

  • davidsask

Heroes needs to die once and for all. Accidentally on Purpose needs to be yanked asap to. Charlie Sheen needs to retire his show as promised.Jay Leno will always be epic mistake! Trauma was better than Mercy although neither of them brings something new to table!

  • Lynn

So basically your options for TV nowadays are:
    A) crime procedurals
    B) hospital/medical shows
    C) lame sitcoms/sketch comedy
    D) tacky reality TV

    *sigh*

    • davey

..and your options from a few years ago were?…..atleast we HAVE options!

  • diane

Please kill Accidentally on Purpose. It’s just painful.

  • Nick

CBS will not stop kicking everyone’s ass, will they? Credit to ‘Castle’ for retaining [and building upon] their audience.

  • BJ

In the final numbers, Heroes dropped even lower to 5.7 million. LMAO! This crap show bombing harder each week amuses me to no end.

  • DavidJ

Wow, looks like people are just avoiding NBC altogether this season. Every one of their shows (except for The Office) seems to be in the same low range.

    • Benny

It’s called the Leno Effect. America in unison turning its back on the network and the show, which is, by the way, appallingly bad.

    • Ace

Even The Office doesn’t post very good ratings.

      • Ama

The office is strong in 18-49 year old demographic. That is what the advertisers are interested in. It sometimes beats Dancing with the Stars in that demo.

  • Matt2

    Yeah, Castle continues to grow!

  • D. Rabbit

Oh, let me think why Trauma did so poorly? Probably because it was total drivel. And I can only speak for the first 12 minutes of the show because I just couldn’t stand it any longer than that. Seriously, I’m shocked at what gets green lit these days.

  • meleegi

I love Lie To Me, but didn’t realize it was on until I started flipping through channels. I hope the ratings pick up and it doesn’t get cancelled.

    • Jane

I know. I accidentally found the show when I was programming my DVR. They need to give Lie to Me a better slot.

  • tim

I am very happy the untalented Jay Leno is bombing. It makes me feel better about this country.

  • Buffy Freak

I’m no TV snob…I certainly enjoy some “trash” TV from tiem to time but someone really needs to explain how CSI Miami (or New York for that matter) get ratings? The acting on Miami is just so horrible and the plots are beyond ridiculous!

    • DavidJ

From what I’ve heard, the reason people love Miami is because it IS so absurd and over the top. lol

    • Jodi

plus I think people made a drinking game based on when Horatio takes off or puts on his glasses…

    • momo

It’s really all about Horatio because he’s so ridiculous that it makes for hilarious tv. If he lost his sunglasses the show would never be the same.

  • sherman

this is good, now nbc can cancel either of those and bring back Chuck early!

  • Eric

Good God Heroes! Yes, that sho has higher ratings than Leno (really, besides the CW who doesn’t?). But it costs a ton. The special effects, the giant cast? How is this still on? The Beautiful Life should have jumped networks and taken its timeslot.

  • Clare

I wish they hadn’t moved HIMYM away from the Big Bang Theory. For a really long time that show had been in danger of being cancelled, I hope the ratings don’t slip just cuz it’s at 8pm. It’s such a great show.

    • Tori

Thank you! HIMYM is my favorite show, and I just don’t understand why more people don’t watch it. It’s head and shoulders above Two and a Half Men, which is basically one joke told over and over.

  • Spider

    Yes, “Castle” kicks ass!!!

  • Gord

I was taking part in Chuckme Mondays last night. We watched Vs the Breakup and Vs the Cougars two great episodes of Chuck. I did however record 2 and a Half men, Big Bang Theory and Castle to watch tonight before NCIS.

  • Gord

It’s pretty sad that there are Chuck fans out there like me that would rather watch repeat episodes from last season than watch new episodes of the crap they put on in the same time slot. What does that say about the quality of TV lately? Can’t believe NBC put off Chuck until next March.

    • Jane

Chuck and Medium were the only reasons why I was watching Heroes. Now Chuck isn’t there to anchor the evening and every time I see Leno, I check my DVR to find a good show to watch.

  • Ryan

Take 8 pm for example people. That’s 30 million people watching four major networks! I implore the networks to realize that some shows will be more popular than others and there will always be a show that isn’t first. That doesn’t mean people don’t care, but canceling and bringing in a new show won’t solve the problem. 30 million watching network tv at 8 is most of the people who watch tv, with 4-5 million more watching cable and the rest of the country doing other things.

  • Molly

NBC is getting too greedy. They create these shows but don’t give them a chance to prove themselves. They must think if they don’t make bank on them ASAP then its not worth it, and that’s just not how it works. I’m getting SO annoyed by awesome shows getting yanked for crap like Trauma and Accidentally On Purpose. At least House and NCIS are still on but MAN, stop being so cancel-happy you jerks. They should count in how many people watch the shows online too, because not everyone can just fit their lives in around the t.v. schedule…

    • VirgilsDiner

You can’t really blame NBC for being gun-shy when it comes to scripted shows and not giving new shows a chance. See, back in the early 90’s, NBC tried to market this comedy about a rising comic and his three friends and the show was basically about nothing. Well, the first season was a disaster – not a lot of people watched and it didn’t seem like the audience was really getting the show, but, to their regret, they stuck with the show, and, slowly but surely, Seinfeld grew and grew and screwed NBC by becoming of the biggest hits ever on television. So scarred and jaded after this experience, NBC has vowed never to invest in promising shows with small audiences. Instead they will go with safe bets, like shows that once had huge audiences and nobody cares about anymore.

      Sincerely,
      A Former “Life” Fan

  • Adam

HIMYM is the funniest show on TV, it blows my mind why more people don’t watch it. I think it’s even funnier than “Friends” and targets that same demo.

    • Elizabeth

I could not agree with you more!! My husband and I have loved this show since it started and we can’t understand why more people aren’t watching it! And I agree that it’s even funnier than Friends and I loved that show too. HIMYM is fantastic! It is the only comedy show that I watch on TV

    • David

Yes! I was watching HIMYM this Monday and just thinking to myself “I actually like this better than Friends”. Glad to see I’m not alone.

    • Amber

That is kinda how I feel about The Big Bang Theory. While I don’t think it is better than Friends (yet)…it is the first show since Friends that I have fallen in love with. I look forward to Monday nights just for the wonderful 30 minutes of Big Bang. I’ve never watched HIMYM but I do hear it is good.

    • VirgilsDiner

Totally agree. By this point in its run, Friends had already overdosed on saccharine story lines like the never-ending “will they/won’t they” Rachel-Ross drama. HIMYM has managed to keep its edge, wearing its quirk like a badge of honor and never dipping its toes for too long in the sentimental shallow end of the pool. And if you disagree, I have two words for you – “Stripper Lilly”

  • Mary

I tried to watch TRAUMA but it was so stupid it ended up being background noise while I surfed the web.

  • otis

DWTS won in our house with HOUSE geting the watch-later vote. 2-1/2 Men and our FAVORITE Big Bang followed by a very enjoable Castle closed our evening. Nothing else was even remotely appealing. David Caruso’s “Horatio” is extremely irritating, but only gave up on CSI:Miami when it became more of a soap than a crime drama.
