Bryan Singer to direct and produce 'Battlestar Galactica' movie

Categories: Film, News, Uncategorized

Battlestar Galactica is getting the big-screen treatment. Universal Pictures has confirmed what was originally reported on HitFix.com that Bryan Singer, director of Valkyrie, will take on directing and producing duties for a BSG movie. Glen Larson, who created original series back in 1978, will produce as well. The film is not expected to be a continuation of current popular television show that’s running on the SyFy network but will be a complete re-imagining of the sci-fi lore that was invented by Larson back in the 70s.

Singer is hit-or-miss for me. The Usual Suspects was brilliant, but his Superman was a mind-numbing bore. X1 awful; X2 awesome. So this could go either way. Honestly, I’ll be happy if no one turns out to be a friggin’ angel.

    • ArchStanton

Exactly – so whatever keeps him away from any other Superman movies is a good project for him.

    • Agreed

Oh my god … hilarious. Couldn’t have said it better. The whole angel thing pissed me off.

      • Frank

Agreed, I thought the angel thing was very creative, but was Starbuck a god or an angel? We know that Baltar and Six were angels, but Starbuck could have gone either way.

      • apostaterebel

If the whole angel thing pissed you off, obviously you don’t remember the original BSG, which was so full of Mormon crap, and had shitloads of angels.

    • Someguy

Hah you hated superman and loved the wolverine movie whoops I MEAN X2 (c wut I did thar?). Im surprised you were able to sit still and enjoy the nuances of Usual Suspects. I like Brian Singers work period. Im sure he will make a fine movie. Now wether or not Battlestar Galactica fans will be able to appreciate it is another thing.

      • crispy

        No, I don’t “c wut u did thar.” I don’t speak moron.

      • Rob P

Um, the Wolverine movie was technically the third X-men movie. X2 and the Wolverine movie were totally different flicks.

      • Kim

Um, sorry Rob P, but the third X-men movie was X-Men: The Last Stand.

    • Delon

Keep him away from Galactica. That guy is not fit to direct any big budget spectacle.

  • Christine

I’m sorry, what?? NOT an extension of the frakking fantastic TV show? I understand not really wanting to mess with the continuity and canon of the TV show (in either of its incarnations,) but come on! No Starbucks, Adama, or Roslin? I disapprove.

    • Nick

Maybe Starbucks will sponsor the show and we’ll their fine coffee in it.

    • Dude

Starbucks is fugly. They need to get Grace Parks in there though! :)

      • Zayne

Why do you keep adding an “s” to names. It’s Starbuck and Grace Park.

I’m a fan of Bryan Singer for the most part but after being a loyal BSG fan these past 5 years, I’m going to find it hard to adjust to a new re-imagining already.

      • maryb

@Zayne: Welcome to my world! Though it was many years after, the BSG on SciFi (won’t use the craptastic new version of the name) unbalanced me since I was a huge fan of the first version. I think it makes more sense to continue the current version (with the amazing cast intact…)

      • May Sky

Well, thanks for telling us what you think about Katee Sackhoff’s looks, the world needed that. Anyway, Starbuck is an awesome character and KS is pitch perfect in the part.

  • Ben

Weird. Well, I guess I’ll give it a shot but it’ll be hard to top the TV show.

    • EricS

This is a terrible idea. Do they really expect people to keep track of three completely different sets of plots and characters from three versions of the same show?

No one who watched the TV show is going to be really interested in this. I am once again dumbfounded by the stupidity of the movie industry.

      • gooby

        It worked for Star Trek.

      • PeolesDru

Considering that at least 75% of the audience for a movie will be people who saw neither the original series or the new SyFy series, I guess they’ll only have to keep track of one universe.

  • david

    dear gods, no….

  • Josh

Seriously I don’t care how good this is, it will pale in comparsion to the tv show so I have NO intentions of watching this.

    • Mark

      sosayweall

      • Mark

Realy, it will entertain us for sure. It may not bring us to further enlightenment though

  • Baco Noir

What a frakking stupid idea. I don’t care how good the director his (and I agree, he’s hit and miss. More miss than hit). If Glen Larson has his hands on this it’s back to cute robot bears and babes in skimpy costumes.

    • rlt

      “…babes in skimpy costumes.”

And what the hell is wrong with that! It’s not like Caprica 6 wasn’t running around in skimpy outfits…no, that never happened.

      Twit.

      • Holladon

I think that was actually Head Six. But either way. I think Baco Noir’s point wasn’t that skimpy hotties is bad, more that it isn’t interesting enough to take center stage, as it’s more likely to in a Larson re-incarnation.

      • Muffit

And what the frack is wrong with cute robot daggets?

But Larson should also get some of those new hot fembots in the movie :)

    • mjcrawford

Keep in mind that Glen Larson DID have his hands on the SyFy version, and there were no stupid monkey-dogs in that one.

    • Sylvan

I don’t recall too many babes in skimpy costumes in Superman or X-Men (Mystique doesn’t really count). X-Men had skin-tight leather, but I think Storm’s original tribal costume would have been better. You know the costume with thigh high boots and held together by the metal ring on the front.

  • Chris

No way will I watch this frakking thing! No RDM no interest.

  • stelvis69

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz……

  • marshall

This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard!!!! They already have “The Plan” about to come out and I trust Eddy J. over Bryan Singer any day!!!!

  • Chris Keller

The recent series was brillant, it cannot be ignored at this point … it has too much public opinion on it’s side not to be considered ‘canon’. Any movie that ignores the series will be sad and lame by comparison.

PS … Guitar Legand Les Paul Dead today at 94. RIP :-(

    • allie

agreed. of course we all knew this wasn’t an RDM production but it still stings every time I read about it!

  • Kevin

Loved the re-imagined series, have no intention of seeing this at all. My mom loves the original series, but I can’t stand how similar it is to Star Wars and how unbeliveably cheezy it is!!!!

  • Aidan

This makes no sense. It reminds of me of the time when someone covered another day in Paradise a week after Phil Colline released his. A complete waste of time. The TV added the “NOW” to the idea that Larson came up with me. I can’t begin what SInger and Co would end up doing. I suppose Patrick Stewart will be Adama, whcih will be worth watching but aside from that I can’t see it working at all.

Whats with the recession and reworkings of old ideas

    • Rosenrot

I don’t think Patrick Stewart as Adama would work, the memories of SCiFi’s BSG are just too fresh. The only way would be more creative casting, like Megan Fox as Adama and Sienna Miller as President Roslin.

      • Yogurt

That’s not why Patrick Steward wouldn’t work as Adama. Patrick Stewart wouldn’t work as Adama because when the Galactica runs into the Enterprise, Patrick Stewart will be the captain on BOTH ships!

  • Aidan

How about Singer working on one final Next Generation Movie instead? Now that would be something worth watching.

    • happybbb

Ooooo. Now that’s a great idea!

  • J.

Maybe Singer should work on The Man of Steel, and give us a Superman Movie that doesn’t suck. He needs to make some apologies for that last one.

  • bhm1304

Whatever. This is a bad idea because Moore and company completely made everyone forget the series and created a great theatrical quality episode each week. There was a reason Singer’s idea for the television reboot was kicked to the curb in favor of the Moore/Eick brilliant retelling, what exactly has changed?

    • rlt

Brilliant retelling? Did you watch the end?

Seriously, the last thing Moore should be let near is a script!

I don’t suppose you saw the Robot Chicken send up of Moore and how he wrote a script, throwing a dart at a dart board.

“This week, will be revealed as a Cylon and will have an affair with Galatica. Meanwhile Adama will be really pissed off to learn HE isn’t a Cylon. He wanted to show Galatica the lovin’ she REALLY needs!

      • bhm1304

Watched the end, thought it was pretty wonderful. Apparently you didn’t get the joke on RobotChicken. Time to go find your own opinion.

      • Chipotle

Actually, I just think it means Moore needs a story editor, someone like Babylon 5’s J. Michael Straczynski. B5 wasn’t flawless, but I’m re-watching it now, and it holds up very well–and more to the point, it may be the most tightly-plotted multiyear story I’ve ever seen. Moore’s better at “natural” dialogue than JMS and can do character-driven scenes with the best of them, but he does plotting like a ferret on espresso.

      • BSGActual

rlt your a dunsel. RLD’s version of the story was extraordinary. This new movie is clearly nothing but a “money grab” attempting to suck up on the success of the SciFi show. A single 2-hour movie cannot possibly hope to compete with 4 years of the finest television ever produced. BTW “SyFy” is just about the dumbest marketing move I’ve ever seen! IMHO.
