'Bruno' tops the box office with $14.2 mil on Friday

Categories: Box Office, News

A gay Austrian’s dream to become “uber-famous” came true, as Sacha Baron Cohen’s new mockumentary, Bruno, topped the box office on Friday, according to early estimates. Bruno, which pushes its R-rating to places never before thought possible, grossed $14.2 million on Friday. By comparison, Cohen’s previous mockumentary, Borat, made $9.2 million on its first day; however, Bruno debuted on more than three times as many screens as Borat (2,756 versus 837). Second place went to the third Ice Age movie, which consumed $8.7 million on Friday while evolving past the $100 million mark. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen dropped 58% in its third week for a gross of $7.6 million. While that steep of a drop would spell trouble for most movies, Transformers has already tallied $323 million in the U.S. (not to mention more than $330 million overseas), so we doubt Paramount is shedding any tears. In fourth and fifth place were Public Enemies and The Proposal, which picked up $4.3 million and $3.5 million, respectively. Also opening wide this weekend was the teen comedy I Love You, Beth Cooper, which clearly could have used more love — it registered a dweebish $2.1 million. Friday’s figures are below. Be sure to check back here on Sunday for the complete weekend box office report.

1. Bruno — $14.2 mil
2. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs — $8.7 mil
3. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen — $7.6 mil
4. Public Enemies — $4.3 mil
5. The Proposal — $3.5 mil

Its sad that this is the kind of trash people spend their money on. In addition you make this guy rich

  • Bobby

I wouldn’t go see Bruno if you paid me to go.It looks like the biggest pile of crap I ever saw.

  • tim

If you’re a huge homophobe or just are plain out grossed out by dicks and gay situations, DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE. I thought it was hilarious though.

  • Ianaleah

There was one hilarious scene, some predictable amusing scenes, and mostly gross, crass, uncouth scenes. There were several people walking out w/o returning at some parts of movie. the scene with the baby and male sex in hot tub was hate generating. Definitely heterosexual unfeeling porn and S&M and a totally misogynistic guy who being gay implied gay men hate women. The scenes humilitationg Ron Paul and also Paula were offensive and insensitive. Actually, the entire movie was insensitive-especially in the scenes where the actor could clearly see the people were miseraable and continued anyway because he simply did not care how they felt or what they thought.Since we humans have imagination and can create, we all are noble and deserve respect. None was shown in this film. Sasha Baron Cohen definitely placed greed as priority in his decision making reagarding the movie. But think whatever you want.

    @Brian
We live in a world where horrible movies like Paul Blart, Wolverine and Transformers made massive amounts of money, you really shouldn’t be so surprised.
This movie at least got decent reviews, unlike those ‘winners’.

  • mark

I thought people already understood that Sasha Baren Cohen acts out extremes to show other people’s reactions. I haven’t seen Bruno, but in Borat he said terribly offensive things to show how people responded (sometimes uncomfortable, and often they agreed!!). He exposes people. You should know what to expect at this point if you go see the movie. I know I will.

  • NIck

Well given the massive ad campaign im not surprised its doing well- doesn’t hurt that most ppl like it – it got 86% on CrazyCritics

I think all your haters are just too uptight. Don’t see the movie if the subject make you uncomfortable. Plain and simple.

  • Bobby

Hey Rich, that tells you how dumb the critics are to give this steaming pile of crap a good review. That is the sad part.

  • Hannah

He does not sound like he is from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, or Australia so… what kind of an accent is he even going for?

  • krisenhiazen

Bruno is a genious! The movie was drop dead hilarious!

  • jessica

Bobby, how do you know it sucks if you admit you haven’t even seen it?

  • Bobby

Did you see the trailer for it?That’s all I had to see, because I thought my eyes were going to start bleeding because it was so horrible.

  • that’s not entertainment

It’s not showing hatred or being homophobic to not want to go see a movie where some guy is shoving his junk in your face and performing outrageous acts of depravity, then questioning the reactions of those who happen to be his victims. A movie about an A$$hat parading around as a gay journalist is one thing, but when you set up deceitful scenarios just to provoke outrage, don’t expect a pat on the back for that, much less think the majority of Americans are going to respect that kind of garbage as entertainment.

  • Bobby

Finally, another smart person responds to this trash.

  • Chrissy

The point as it was with borat was to play to stereotypes in order to get reactions. which is the reason he retired ali g and borat as charecters because they became too well known and were no longer able to get the desired reaction with. Its like trolling or griefing people do it because the reaction is funny. and judging the movie even though you havent seen it is pretty stupid.

  • Tommo

Geez, you would have to be American to make a comment like that, what would you expect from a Sasha Baron Cohen movie? Respect, dignity and considerations to peoples feelings? Nobody was physically hurt whilst making this film – so regardless of what you think it was harmless, if it offends your oh-so delicate moral standards then why subject yourself to such an ‘evil’ film in the first place?
Stop being so stiff and realise the whole film is supposed to be a crazy, over-the-top JOKE. Also, i am gay and i didn’t feel that this film was being homophobic, anybody who watches this film and walks away thinking they have a true idea of what gay people really act like is not worth an opinion in society in the first place.

  • DRHinCMH

UGH!! We can only hope that it tanks throughout the rest of the weekend. If Sacha Baron Cohen wants to make money by attempting to embarass or humiliate people, why can’t he do it as himself? What’s he afraid of? And if it’s fake, then what’s the purpose in portraying characters that fit into the most obvious stereotypes?

  • Alberto Serrano

Brüno is brilliant! Through his farcical persona he is able to show us the absurd, the derisory and the ridiculousness that permeates our societies. Brüno confirms what we already know of the idiotic and nonsensical world we live in. Brüno is not the personification of the laughable and ludicrous, he is the enabler; through his character we are forced to laugh at our ridiculous selves. Sacha Baron Cohen is a genius.

  • Peg

Tommo claims that if people watch this and think that’s what gay people are like, then they are not worthy of an opinion. Wow, what a self serving point of view. I guess you are supposed to only base your knowledge of gays on gay approved media. Any divergent views portrayed in the media not only are considered null and void, but will result in the viewer’s opinion being considered ignorant and may be subject to being called hateful. Thank you to the gay thought police for setting us all “straight.”
I will NOT go to this or any Sasha Baren Cohen’s movies. The only reason he is able to do this kind of CRAP is money, so he’ll never see a CENT of my money. I don’t think this kind of humor is funny or appropriate. He makes me SICK!

  • lindsey

I remember at one time everyone thought that Tom Greene was some kind of genius too. There is a fine line between being edgy and just being a douchebag in general. Bruno tries too hard. It’s not real when he has to piss people off just to get a reaction. Just because someone doesn’t want a stranger’s balls in their face doesn’t make them a homophobe.

  • brunis

I wish they kept the scene with Latoyal Jaxson. http://www.bbwsinglesdate.com

  • BDogg

Bobby + Brian = Secret gay lovers.

  • Bobby

Hey BDogg, the only thing that is more gay than this movie is you for making a stupid comment like that.

  • JJinhawaii

Wow, you are all totally missing the point here. Its just a movie, its for entertainment value. If you wouldn’t value this type of entertainment, then don’t watch it. If you do value it, then go see it. Why is everyone so upset? Is sooo important that you share your feelings in such a violent way? ridiculous all of you. I watched this movie last night, and let me tell you it was crazy gross, but also very funny and entertaining. There were some scenes that are hard to stomach, and that doesn’t make you homophobic, and there was a lot of entertaining things too. So its just really simple, if you cant stomach it, then don’t watch it. But hate is never tolerated. Everyone just needs to chill and take a look at silly you are being for spewing these hate filled words around.

    Borat/Bruno for 2012

  • Q

Bobby…stating that something is bad or dumb proves nothing. How about some reasons for it?

  • mike

No one ever thought Tom Green was a genious. There is no comparison between Sacha Baron Cohen and Tom Green.

  • ex sacha baron cohen lover

its sad because ali g and borat were both so clever… and even bruno back in da ali g show days… this bruno movie didnt focus on the views of the idiots he is supposed to interview… it focused bruno bouncing around with no purpose. very disappointing
