'Transformers 2' wins Friday box office, becomes highest grosser of 2009

Categories: Box Office

There’s good news, great news, and not-so-great news for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The good news: According to estimates from Box Office Mojo, the blockbuster grossed $17.8 million on Friday, edging past Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs‘ $17 million for the top spot the second day in a row. The great news: With a ten-day total of $268.7 million, director Michael Bay can now stake his claim to making the highest grossing film of the year. (Second place Up, with $261 million, is poised to pass The Incredibles as Pixar’s second highest grossing film ever.)

Now for the not-so-great news: For the ongoing five-day July 4 weekend, Ice Age 3 has still brought in more dough, with $41.9 million to Transformer 2’s $40.2 million. Can Optimus Prime and the Autobots catch up with the Manny the Woolly Mammoth and his history-defying Pleistocene pals? Check back here tomorrow for the full Box Office Report.

The studio can gloat all it wants, but whatever success TF2 has, is due only to the good will generated by the first movie.

Pray to god Harry Potter takes it down.

If Im Micheal Bay Im LMAO at the critics and the haters right now. Im an original G1 transformers and Im LOVING this. My beloved childhood toys/heroes are dominating in the way I had always dreamed. The mere fact that people keep going back to watch this movie merely shows to me that people who hated or bashed this movie have lost touch with what is a good fun movie vs an oscar contender.
    Let the hate go.

  • Christine

Well, Harry Potter is coming out… =) TEN MORE DAYS!

  • Rick S.

Here’s hoping this Harry Potter film doesn’t suck as much as the last two ;)

  • PJ

Oh yeah, that’s REALLY bad news for a movie that’s made over 500 million worldwide. I’m sure Michael Bay will be crying in his pillow if it’s not the #1 picture this weekend.

I think a castration with a rusty, blunt knife is more pleasant than Transformers 2.
I see films every single week for my university paper and while there are a few worst films out there this year, Transformers is my most hated. Why? Because by how successful a truly bad film has become
I really, really, really, really want Michael Bay to go away. Seriously, I really want him to do something else other than destroying cinema. He sits there bitching and complaining to Paramount exe’s about how “my film isn’t being marketed right”…um, sorry?! How many thousands and millions of filmmakers are getting their films marketed at all?
Those people cannot be serious when they say Transformers 2 “IS THE BEST MOVI EVA!”. It’s dung with a pornographic sensibility. It’s long, boring, load, hideously corrupt, stupid, evil-minded trash!
    MICHAEL BAY, GO AWAY!!!

To all you haters out there, don’t hate the player hate thegame….

When a movie has made $268.7 million at the B.O. in just 10 days ($508.9 mil worldwide), I don’t think being $1.7 million behind another movie matters all that much. The real bad news is that a new movie can’t shake Transformers more than that.
And why would anyone “pray to god” that the new HP movie makes more money? Here’s something to pray about, the people of Iran. That’s what you pray about, “Blackbutton.”

  • chuck

In no surprise that this film is making HUGE money.Unfortunetly its a hollow shell of the first film.

I saw ‘Transformers’ last weekend and completely blown away by how much better it looked the second time around. I saw the first installment four times in theaters when it came out and while I don’t plan to repeat it for the second installment, I do plan to go again and see it…only this time in IMAX!

  • Nate

Transformers can make all the movie it wants, garbage it still is garbage at the end of the day and you know what? It stinks something rancid. Worst.Movie.Of.The.Decade.

Why does everyone dispise this movie? There’s nothing to hate about it, it’s a movie! You don’t have to hate it!

  • Joey

After weeping for the future of our country, I must say …
    1) There have been very few good movies this year, and this proves the overall crappiness of 2009 in cinema.
    2) This also shows that our teens and tweens need something else to do with their time.
This is truly an awful movie and the people seeing it a second time must have brain and/or ear damage.

  • bemused poet

Transformers isn’t the worst movie. Geesh! Do you enjoy anything in life at all? LOL It’s a sci-fi movie. Anyone who critiques a sci-fi movie is lame. You critique Schindler’s List not a sugary action flick. The worst movie this year is Year One and probably Bruno. LOL

  • The World

WHY wasn’t MEGAN FOX NUDE !

  • dio

love transformers and there are more STRAIGHT people like me who love nay adore this movie BUT you poor gay fools just cannot get over the fact that there is not a bot named FAGATRON who sings showtunes if there was you haters would love it

  • dio

whoa looks like i hit a nerve huh… jazmen

  • Nathan

    Agreed Jazmen!

  • Amarti9

Again, if this movie was soooooooo terrible how come its killing the competition and smashing records held by the likes of Spiderman, Star Wars, and Harry Potter?? It was only beaten by The Dark Knight by a hair.
This is why I love reading the negative comments about this movie because they are in the CLEAR minority on this. Anytime a movie is making THIS much coin 2 weeks in a row its clear its because of people going to see the movie again 3 or 4 times. Im not just talking about your regular fanboys either because if that was the case Star Wars Episode 1 or 3 would have a billion dollars in box office sales in 2 weeks. You have regular people who werent originally fans of the G1 show who loved this movie and went back. Face reality, this movie was GREAT for what it set out to do……….to entertain………not win an academy award. GO OPTIMUS!

  • jazmen

the only reason it beats those movies is cuhz they suck too…lol… thats why it didnt beat the GOOD movies

  • justahunch

First off, dio, you are one sick homophobe puppy. What do gay people have to do with this horrid film? Secondly, this is a TERRIBLE movie as was the first, but at least that was slightly better than this one. I read somoewhere that this is probably the worst reviewed blockbuster ever made and I believe it! At least it deserved each and everyone of those terrible opinions just as it deserves mine and every other negative one. Other than little boys, I don’t know who could like this.

  • Jojackson

If you all say Transformers 2 was so bad, why don’t you go out and make a better movie. All you do is sit at ur computer all day and complain about why other people aren’t entertaining you. Go out and get some exercises or make a better movie. If you can criticize you must be able to do better.

  • TROF-its all good news

If the not so great news is that Ice Age has a 1.7 million dollar lead for the five day holiday weekend, that’s really the not so great news for Ice Age because you’re comparing and contrasting box office performance between a new movie and a movie that has been out for nearly two weeks. And apparently Public Enemies is so out of the picture it didn’t even get mentioned. TROF has been in theaters much longer but it is still winning where it counts the most. That’s a bitter pill to swallow, I know. These things are self evident: over 300 million in domestic box office grosses by the end of the holiday period which is sure to be a record of some sort; it’s a movie the world loves and loves seeing over and over again; a worldwide gross of 600 million is just days away; 400 million domestic is inevitable and where it goes from there is anyones guess at this point

  • Fulcrumshift

Okay, first off, why do people go to the theaters to see action movies? Action. Transformers 2 delivers this. How do the negative nincompoops out there critique an action flick? I see comments like ‘horrible’ and ’sucks’ but no real basis. It’s like they try and find a flaw in the armor and expose it, but to no avail, so they’re left with one word remarks followed by a diatribe of generalizations and insults that really dont begin to tell *why.
Sure, it had a lukewarm plot, but who cares? Optimus Prime kicks butt! Tons of actions scenes with that patented Micheal Bay overdose of explosions.
If that’s not enough to appreciate this kind of movie or not even have a real opinion on why you didn’t like it, please, take up knitting. Leave your theater seat to someone else who’ll enjoy the movie.

  • LMAO

Wow! All ten people that hated the movie are here!

  • MW

@Amarti9:It is smashing records because people have to go and SEE it before they know that it’s bad. It’s not as though once folks realize they don’t like the movie they can ask that their $10 not be counted towards its total income!

  • MW

I thought this movie was terrible and I DO have a reason. First, there weren’t a “ton” of great battle scenes as someone said. There were only 3 that stand out to me:at the very beginning, Prime and the Decepticons in the forest, and the final battle. The rest of the time, I felt like I was watching National Lampoon’s Transformers. Everything was about going for the cheap laughs. I mean, did we need a 10-minute scene about Sam’s mom eating a pot brownie? Also, they introduced at least a dozen new robots, but they were barely seen. Devastator, for example, was completely wasted. I wanted to see him in a huge battle scene with the Autobots and instead Bay put him in a lame, comedic scene with Skids and Mudflap and then blew him up! And I was so excited for the introduction of Arcee, who got,at most 10 minutes of film time. IMO, there was way too much filler in this film and the robots and action scenes seemed like an after thought. IMO, the 1986 animated film was better than this one.
