The only other new release of the weekend, the Cameron Diaz-weepie My Sister’s Keeper, grossed $12 million for a fifth place in the box office derby. The rest of the top five was dominated by successful holdovers with The Proposal dropping only 45% its second weekend in theaters for a ten-day cume of $69.1 million and a weekend take of $18.5 million. The Hangover keeps on trucking, grossing an additional $17.2 million for a total cume of $183.2 million and third spot in the rankings. Pixar’s Up has now outgrossed Cars, earning $13 million for a total take of $250 million.
In limited release, Summit Entertainment scored big with its Iraq war drama The Hurt Locker from director Kathryn Bigelow. Opening on only four screens in New York and Los Angeles, the festival fave grossed $144,000 for a per-theater average of $36,000. The film was sold out in its four theaters on opposite coasts. It will expand into more markets on July 10.

Pixar’s “Up” became the biggest movie in the domestic box office so far with an estimated $250 mln. It is also the top rated movie so far (www.rottentomatoes.com). I think this movie deserves that title, even though Trasnformers and Harry Potter movies will pass. The other thing is that the numbers of Transformers 2 will go down very fast, and it can gross near to $350 mln in North American box office. As a movie it gives no massage to a viewer. And I think the next one will be more interesting without any actors in it. Because the acting in the movie is 0 if not minus.

Movie Lover, you make some interesting points. But I’m not sure you should knock Transformers because it “gives no massage” to it’s viewers. I believe that you would need special seats for that. Or at least a very short masseur…

The movie was a little on the long side, but my God those effects are wicked, especially those IMAX filmed scenes! Lots of fun.
Well, there’s no accounting for taste.
The effects carried the movie…there was no plot, the actors didn’t have to show up (and they had either nothing to do or what was there was horribly written). For a summer popcorn movie it was fine. BIG BIG NOTE to E.W….can we please get rid of these posts that offer links to spam sites or worse????????? E.W. needs to update its Terms of Service to disallow these postings.
Ranting about the success of Transformers 2 certainly isn’t going to kill its box office performance and neither is saying it’s going to drop hard next week. You can say it, think it, or type it until you pass out from it. You cannot demand that people not like a movie just because you didn’t. Reality is hard to swallow sometimes but the truth is this is a movie the world loves, not just Americans. Transformers 2 also did over 200 million in
European and Asian countries. At its current pace of ticket sales it will probably reach 300 million by next weekend and 400 million the following weekend. If for some crazy reason that happens to ruin your life don’t follow the box office results for the next month or so because its box office grosses are only going to grow larger.
I still have less of a problem with this than the week when Paul Blart Mall Cop topped the box office. Transformers 2 was problematic, but still less so than Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine 3D and half the other movies that make insane amounts of money. I know this movie made more but it had a bigger audience (a lot of kids and older people went to see this.) Face it: Americans like crap. It’s the only thing we go to see in movie theaters. There’s nothing we can do about it at this point.
This movie allows you to go and escape a little while from all the horrible things going on in the world. i thought the movie rocked. It’s a movie about robots I knew to expect very little dialogue and a lot of action. It was a great fun.
Great. This’ll make Shia LeBouf’s head even bigger.

Watch The Hurt Locker everyone! An amazing film. The gunfire and explosions in Hurt are intense and meaningful, unlike in Transformers where it’s just tedious.

@ Tom. You can criticise people for saying that the movie will drop hard etc. But assuming that this is a movie the world loves is just as much a of leap as saying it will drop next week. Opinion of movie cannot be judged by its first weeks performance, it only demonstrates the success or failure of the marketing campaign and the hype generated by it for the movie. Whether or not the move is “loved” will be determined by its staying power at the box office. If the movie was loved by the world, 50%ish of comment about the movie wouldn’t be negative
