'Transformers 2' grosses record $60.6 mil at the box office on Wednesday

Categories: Box Office, News

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is one massive movie. The Michael Bay-directed juggernaut earned an astounding $60.6 million on its opening day at the box office. No other film has earned that much money in the middle of the week, and only The Dark Knight ever banked so much in a single day (it grossed $67.2 million on opening day last summer).

How Transformers 2 will hold through the weekend will be very interesting to see. The fanboys sure came out in force on opening day. But Hollywood, hungry for a huge hit, will be closely watching whether they will return throughout the weekend. Check back later today for our full predictions in the Box Office Report.

Great summer movie. Worth the wait.

  • Joe

Good summer movie, great effects just plain fun. Glad it did well and we get a Transformers 3

  • Nate

Oh it will no doubt be huge this weekend, but like Wolverine and Terminator before it, it will drop big time by week two and then it will quietly disappear ’cause it sucks. Worst sequel of the summer.

  • blackbutton

I’m glad it got a great opening seeing as most people won’t be back for a second viewing and negative word of mouth might spread. At the very least it will reach 280 million.

Awesome movie, I dont understand why the critics were so negative towards it

  • mario

This movie was awesome and the negative comments are just haters. i am gonna keep on going to the movies to watch this movie again and again.

It was expected to open big, that was a given. Let’s see if it holds up well in the coming weeks. You have Public Enemies, Ice Age3, Bruno, Potter, not to mention the continuing strong runs of The Hangover, Up, and others. If it’s a good movie then it should hold up well, if not, then it will go into a quick descent.

  • Silly Plot, Fun Movie

I was expecting the exaggerated plot, fun movie..mindless plot. If you expect more then your clearly not a Michael Bay fan

  • Elle

Love this movie. Going to see it again!

  • Dennis

Terrible movie. Even going in with the most basic and forgiving standards, it still couldn’t meet them. The only ones who enjoy this and will come back for more are those who can’t see past their noses, and find that even a little ounce of cognition is way too much work for them.

This is crazy. Good thing for Paramount is that most Americans are stupid to pay for work from a hack like Michael Bay.

  • Sad for America

All this does is further cement the idiocy of our youth in this country. I weep for what the US will be in 20 years.

  • Alex O

With regard to your comments Rahul, you know your stupid ass is going to pay to see it so don’t come off as some pretentious little girl.

I LOVED THIS MOVIE! I don’t get why the critics hated it so much. If they were expecting Oscar-fodder like “Doubt” or “Slumdog Millionare” (both of which I enjoyed and liked) they set their expectations too high.
This is summer after all. The season of mindless, action-packed flicks.

I had high expectations for Tran 2. I thought it would be the next Empire Strikes back. A good portion lived up to the hype, However, Bay pulled a Lucas and brought not one stereotypical caracitures/Jar Jar Binks character to T2 but two. See Twins with their jivin’ around and gold teeth. Because I am a die hard Transformers fan, I will sell out and look the other way. Hopefully they will be the first to catch a gat in T3 and then they can fill another role of brotha’s getting killed first in movies.

I went and saw this last night to a packed out house and at the end everybody applauded. It was awesome. Was it the caliber of The Dark Knight? Heck, no. But did anyone expect it to be. This is Michael Bay, people. Take it for what it is. Shia was awesome as usual and so were his parents, but Megan Fox needs to get some serious acting lessons. She is hot and all, but good Lord.

Anyone who was hoping for more than just a big, loud, special-effects extravaganza, summer action movie is stupid in the first place. I don’t go see Michael Bay movies looking for an action movie with depth. The Dark Knight, this is not. I go just to have a good time and be entertained. And that’s exactly how I felt when I saw this last night. It was a fun and entertaining summer popcorn flick that delivers exactly what it promises, no more and no less. So there’s really no reason to complain unless you stupidly had much higher expectations for it.

OMG!! OMG!!! racist robots!!! dude, we’re about to have missles up our turdcutters. btw…i think Tranny-formers is a much better movie then all of ‘em. it only airs in Brazil tho. in addition, who listens to what other people tell them to see? …and further more…argue with someone else about it? in closing, satan is cool and poo turns green on st. patty’s day. rattle snap ur back fat.

  • Mary

First off – this article stated that the fanBOYS came out in full force. I would just like to state the fanGIRLS came out in full force as well.
Second – I saw the review on CNN “the worst movie of the summer.” please. The movie was amazing and it had to have SOME kind of good in it if it grossed THIS much money in it’s opening day! It’s not supposed to be a philosophical profound movie and I think that’s one of the reasons it’s hated by critics. But the movie was FUN! and it held up all the personalities of the transformers from the show. THe effects were amazingly fun and even though the plot wasn’t life changing dramatic, it was still cohesive and it made sense! There was action, comedy, romance, giant robots fighting each other. It was great fun for kids and for adults! Shia was amazing as usually and was extremely fun to watch!

OMG!! Racist Robots!! dude, we’re about to have missles up our fling flops. btw…i think Tranny-formers is a much better movie then all of ‘em. it only airs in Brazil tho. in addition, who listens to what other people tell them to see? …and further more…argue with someone else about it? in closing, satan is cool and poo turns green on st. patty’s day. rattle snap ur back fat.

LMAO … If the twin robots reminded you of a certain race of people, then that would make YOU a racist. I just thought they were funny. I didn’t even think about them being portrayed a certain way.
And I have met all different races that act that way, so WHO is being stereotypical here?

  • Me

I enjoyed the first Transformer movie and a huge fan of Michael Bay. And as a mixed race American, I was extremely offended by the blatant stereotype of certain characters/robots. I don’t expect everyone to get that a lot of people are upset by the gold tooth and ebonic speaking robots. But it was offensive whether everyone agrees or not. It would have been equally funny if the robots spoke using any other vernacular like robot. But there was an obvious attempt to associate certain robots with a certain class of American. And no one can deny that. No even the great Michael Bay.
Its not funny when its a constant painful reminder that we still have so far to go in this country. Black President and all.

  • BigC

The robots wouldn’t be a parody of anybody if there weren’t idiots that actually act like that.

  • Andy

haha. I enjoyed the 2 robots. Frankly, they reminded me of HALF of the population of my INCREDIBLY WHITE town of Madison, IN. Most kids in this redneck little town dress and act like that. Are you trying to say that they are representative of only African Americans? Please.

  • AfroSunshine

I just have one thing to say. If automatically you considered the “jive talking robots with gold teeth” to be black characters, aren’t you yourself sterotyping and in turn being racist as well? Just something to think about. Plus, I never knew Robots could be a certain ethnicity. It’s crazy. Oh..and folks lighten up…they are robots, they’re not real. The will not change the way of the world. Laugh…because its funny, not because you want to read more into the movie than should be. i wonder if those so offended laughed regularly at The Chapplle Show? BTW..I LOVE THE TRANSFORMERS!!

  • Jedi1123

Great Movie! FANGIRLS were also out in force. Get a CLUE! It is the 21st Century!

  • larry k

This was an entertaining summer film. That said,it was waaay too long.Worst movie of the summer?”Land of the Lost gets my vote for that dubious honor.

  • Heather

I know that I am going to piss a lot of people off by saying this, but this is irking me.
So, in real life, if someone talks like the twin robots and had gold teeth like that, would you not laugh at them. I know I would. It is just as ridiculous in real life as it is in the movie.
And maybe this certain race of people that some people are talking about should act more like Barack Obama and they would get further in our country. Because if they act like those two robots, then that is probably the reason that they are getting nowhere.

  • misfit39

I thought the movie was GREAT!!! I didn’t find the movie racist at all!! They were being very funny and if anyone takes it to be racist then I think they are just trying to stir up trouble and put it in peoples minds.
