Paramount was looking for bigger with Michael Bay’s highly anticipated Transformers sequel and it looks like they’ve got it. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen debuted to a record $16 million last night, the most ever for a Wednesday midnight run. (Warner Bros.’ The Dark Knight scored $18 million for its midnight run last year, but that was on a Friday.)
So how high will Transformers 2’s grosses go this weekend? Predictions have ranged anywhere from $125 million to $160 million for the five-day frame. Whatever the number, it will be good news for the box office, which is having trouble maintaining last summer’s record draw. Check back here tomorrow for more detailed predictions in the Box Office Preview.

Congratulations America. You have made a misogynistic, racist, retarded movie a big hit. Thank you for allowing Hollywood to know that people don’t want 3-dimensional characters, a coherent plot or quality editing. We want robot testicles, humping robots and a robot Amos and Andy. Bravo.
Love the movie and Megan. She is so hot: http://www.actressscene.com/search/label/Megan%20Fox
The comment (“…America. You have made a misogynistic, racist, retarded…”) is in itself offensive and everything it claims to hate. Why do haters feel they must bother the rest of us with their garbage? Can’t we just get along?
Ah, “Q”, you are sooo much better than the rest of us. I don’t know how we survive without your wisdom.
Anyway! Dude, lighten up, will you? it’s just a movie. It’s entertainment. Don’t worry, I’m sure there will be plenty of pretentious, self-important, boring movies released around Oscar time. In the meantime,if you don’t want to see the movie, don’t. That just means there will be more seats for those of us that still like to have fun at the movies.
@Hawaii Muskrat
I don’t follow.
How is my criticism, in and of itself, also misogynistic, racist and retarded? I am pretty sure you have complained about some movie in the past.
Bay turned heroic transformers into a human and robot sex movie. I’ve lost a lot of respect for him and tricking people to watch a transformers movie.
Hey Q & Dumb please stfu. You know everyone is going to see it. so please stop. your acting like f-ing robots are real actors. Please why dont’t you sit them in your basement/bedroom and interview them. NERDS ahhhh
Congratulations Q, you have made having thin skin and a penchant for being constantly offended a way of life. Thank you for letting the world know that we don’t want to enjoy things for what they are without someone policing them because somewhere, someone has their underwear in a bunch. We want turtlenecks, mocha’s and subtitled indie flicks.
way to go Q! Don’t expect too much from America…
this movie was exactly what i was expecting. Fun to watch, sure it wasn’t best movie material but it’s the middle of the summer and i just wanna have some fun at the movies…
Yes, the movie is big and dumb. But I don’t hate America for going to see it. The Hangover, Up, and Star Trek are giant hits not because of marketing or gimmicks, but because of strong story and characters. So, the success of those films more than make up for the success of Transformers, oh, and Paul Blart.
16 MILLION DOLLARS- OMG!!! For a movie that opened at midnight on a Wednesday in the middle of a non-holiday week. Nicole, you’re looking at a movie that is going to take in excess of 200 Million. Remember there were close to 300 sold out midnight showings across the country last night. And as of today close to 700 sold out shows for the weekend. It will be the number one movie of the year by the end of the weekend. And who knows how big it’s holiday totals are going to be for the fourth of July weekend. I’m Stunned! My question for EW is knowing that the 1st Transformers film did over 700 million worldwide, do you guys think this one will do a billion dollars?
I personally don’t think this film will do the billion dollar thing, mainly due to poor word of mouth. The word of mouth for the first one was much better, and then it had legs. I see this one dropping like a stone. It could pull in $100 million for the weekend, and $160 million for its five days, but it will drop. It will make over $300 million domestic, but not much. We’re not talking Titanic or Dark Knight here. By August, it will be nearly gone from theaters.
I enjoyed the movie for what it was (dumb, mindless fun), but the word of mouth isn’t that great on it. It’ll make a killing this opening weekend and then drop pretty sharply. Most people I’ve talked to who’ve seen it were underwhelmed, and some even said it was boring. I went in with low expectations, so I wasn’t disappointed.
I saw the movie at midnight and I thought it was spectacular! The people who reviewed it must not have been paying attention because it was awesome. The best movie I’ve seen so far this year, and it will probably stay that way with Harry Potter 6 and New Moon close behind.
Just got back from seeing it in Orlando Fla. It wasn’t the best nor the worst movie I have seen this year. But it was fun and honestly that is all I want from the movies. My only concern was the amount of language in this one and my 8 and 6 yr olds wanting to see it. Anybody who expected some philosophical trip into meaningful cinema obviously didn’t watch the first one or any other summer blockbuster for the last 40 years. Buy some popcorn and a soda for $30, sit down and lose 2 hours towards some mindless fun.
The Movie Was Great… Sadly looks like one of the last Record Breaking Movies of the year… Most Movies you saw them play trailers for before Transformers were stupid, insanely childish.. and will be lucky to make anywhere close to what they drew in on opening night. AND IT WAS A WENESDAY!!!!
Big weekend, then big drops. The first one was a hit because it was BETTER than people expected, and crossed over to non-fanboys seeing it (like me, a 40-something guy with kids). But one robot-fighting movie was enough for me. As Bay himself says, this one he made for the FANS, and as such will have a huge opening and then no legs, no crossover appeal.
Transformers I was a great movie. I have been looking forward to the sequel ever since I walked out of the theatre with Bumblebee my newest bud… Give everyone a break, the art of cinema is to take our imaginations to heights, places, and stratuspheres we never imagined could be created. Transformers I and II does that and more. My grandsons (5 yrs) love the Transformers, to the tune of at least $300 in Level 3-5 transformers. (I’ve gotten very good at conversions!) It is a summer blockbuster, fun, escapism, and all that 5-35 are looking for during an economically tough and barren summer hiatus. Optimus is strong and true, looking to save Earth and her weak inhabitants; Bumble is a guardian that every kid would love to have next to them. Megatron is the perfect foe, voice, bot body, and all. Just have fun, quit judging and let everyone have their 2.5 hours of booming excitement and screaming thrills. Autobots roll out – KUDOS for saving our sorry asses this summer!
with all due respect, that movie is rated pg-13 for a reason. its not right to take little kids to a movie and then say it had too much language. seriously, what did you expect? movies are rated for a reason.
Q wow what a fool you are you know what you remind me of….. what charlie brown hears when he is on the phone ….. wah wah wah need i say more ?
wow, the critics do not like this film at all! who knows, maybe I won’t either! but I think i’ll view it. it will be fun to see if it can beat the first transformers $319.2 million. it won’t beat dark knight. and harry potter is hyped up to a high level, causing me to believe that hp could be 2009’s biggest earner. (ps, up is on its way to the $300 million club also)
You can take the “Little Kids” to IHOP and hear worse language from the kitchen over who picked up the wrong pancake order. Kids will be introduced to all sorts of stuff at home, school, and everywhere. It is up to parents to disseminate what is good and what is bad. That holds true in all things. Kids are so savvy these days that they know the difference between real and make-believe better than many adults. I hope those kids that see Transformers II have good parental units guiding them so when they ask what it was about they will be told – FUN, MAKE BELIEVE. Little, little ones should not go, it isn’t the language that bothers them, it is the loud sounds that disturb them..5-7 love it, it is the 8-13 who are taking notes on words used, by whom and to whom – those are the ones you need to monitor. Don’t misunderstand, there are many movies the kids should be steered clear of that are P-13, but that is where parental guidance comes in.
after seeing this lastnight i think it was better then the first it leaves alot more doors open then the first i know that and the end reminded me so much of the cartoon, not saying who but 2 of them flee just like i remember back in the day. Bay did do his research wasy to see.
Fanboy hate for Michael Bay is strong but I still see this as a critic proof event.

COOLGRANDMA…first you might learn the language before you try and teach you grandchildren anything…the commment “It is up to parents to disseminate what is good and what is bad” makes no sense at all! Desseminate means “to spread abroad as though sowing seed” I’m not really a picky or bitchy person, but please, that’s just embarrasing.
how many “m’s” in Comment again. Perhaps you should spell check before you start talking smack about poor grammer or misuse of words eh?
Wow! it’s a hot girl!
