'The Proposal' celebrates with $34.1 mil: Box Office Report

Categories: Box Office, News

The-proposal_l Sandra Bullock will surely be popping open the champagne as her new romantic comedy, The Proposal, accepted the top spot at the box office this weekend by grossing $34.1 million, according to early estimates by Hollywood.com Box Office. Not only did The Proposal win the weekend, but it was by far the best opening of Bullock’s career, nearly doubling the opening of her previous best, Premonition, which debuted to $17.6 million in 2007. While The Proposal’s success was fueled mostly by women (approximately two-thirds of the audience was female), both women and men gave it a healthy “A-” CinemaScore rating, so expect the movie to hold up fairly well during the next few weeks.

The weekend’s other big release, the prehistoric buddy comedy Year One, landed in fourth place with $20.2 million — an okay debut for the $60 million movie. However, all indicators point to a quick descent for the Jack Black/Michael Cera flick. Year One dropped 24 percent from Friday to Saturday (never a reassuring sign), and the movie received an unimpressive “B-” rating from CinemaScore. Year One is all but certain to join Land of the Lost as another box-office disappointment for high-concept comedies.

On the other hand, The Hangover (No. 2 with $26.9 million) and Up (No. 3 with $21.3 million) continued to show off their box-office stamina, dropping only 18 percent and 31 percent, respectively, from the prior weekend. Up now stands at $224 million, and may levitate past Star Trek (currently at $239 million) to become the year’s highest-grossing film.

Finishing off the top five was The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, which fell an alarming 52 percent for an $11.3 million weekend stash. Also opening this weekend was Woody Allen’s Whatever Works, starring Larry David. The New York-based comedy laughed up $281,000 from just nine theaters for a weekend-leading $31,000 gross per theater. The film will expand to more than 300 theaters on July 3.

Overall, the box office was up 3 percent compared to last year’s Father’s Day weekend, when Get Smart debuted to a surprisingly sharp $38.7 million. Hope you all are having a splendid Father’s Day! I know I will — I’m taking my pop to see Up.

Loved The Proposal. It was surprisingly funny!

Good for Sandra! I’ve become more of a fan of hers, partly just due to longevity with a genre, even getting better it seems. Good chem’y w/Ryan as well, he’s younger too so it’s kind-of a reversal – she’s the Hugh Grant character in this one! This shows she can change it up a bit and make it work – AND fun! With Julia R, Reese W bailing on comedy roots, we need her! Sandra, Betty White, and Diane Keaton YOU ROCK!

I liked the movie, and Sandra Bullock is one of my faves. I love her movies. While you were Sleeping. Speed. Girl has a long winning track record.

Loved The Proposal. Sandra B. was beautiful and a hoot. Ryan R. was just as funny. Betty White, of course, was a screech. The whole movie was wonderful. Glad it was #1. I may see it again!

I think it’s great when a decent chick flick out performs all the male star power in bigger budgeted movies. Hollywood should take note: Women will go see movies about women. Large untapped market here people.

  • Mary

I’d been waiting for a chick flick with a smart heroine. I skipped bride wars and he’s not that into you etc because they seemed so dumb. This one I saw and enjoyed.

  • Sally in Chicago

    J. is right. There’s a large female audience. Me and my female friends go to the movies that are “fam” friendly and we like comedies. I would like to see some actress (Bullock? Ashley Judd?) bring back the Women flicks like Bette Davis & Joan Crawford used to make.
I miss the Red River Rock and Last Seduction heroines.

i love Sandra Bullock. always have, always will. 28 Days is one of my favorites.

I was dragged to see this garbage (after making my girlfriend see Pelham 123). Seriously, The Proposal followed every cliche in the book, step by step! From the trailer I knew exactly how this movie would play out and, guess what?, I WAS RIGHT! By supporting crap like this people are playing into the Hollywood machine and making it less likely for studios to take a chance on more original fare. Everybody who liked this movie must be huge fans of Twilight!

  • brenda

Went to see The Proposal. Loved the movie. Loved everyone in it, but Betty white steals the movie. she’s hysterical. This movie is a must see.

  • J.

Dude, Matt, my wife took me to see this, and while I wasn’t clamoring to see it (I too, knew exactly where it was going), I recognized that there aren’t that many decent movies for women out there. The Proposal isn’t going to win an originality awards; that isn’t the point of this movie. What women want is to watch men and women in romantic, comedic situations. Originality, plausibility would be great; but what women really want are movies geared towards them. Twilight has no appeal to me; but I’m not the target audience. Let women have their movies–even if men don’t think they’re very creative.

I went to see “The Proposal” Loved the movie, loved everyone in it, but Betty White steals the movie. She’s hysterical. A must see for everyone!!.

Up – looking forward to it being the number 1 movie of the summer (wonder if Potter or Transformers will fare better?).

  • Fatima

I think Sandra Bullock is one of the most likable people in movies and always will be. I’ve loved her as long as she’s been around. I always wished she do some more daring work to balance the romantic comedies though. I think she could surprise us more than we realize.

Is this movie original? Not particularly? Is it charming, sweet and funny? Definitely. And I got to romantic comedies for the charming, sweet and funny.
Plus, Betty White! She’s worth the ticket price alone.

  • Matt

Sandy B. is great. And Up is outstanding.

  • Vince

My problem with “chick flicks” are if they’re not even trying to be entertaining; it’s like they’ll shoehorn actors into a well-worn formula and expect it to make millions. With “The Proposal”, I hear it’s very well done and likable, regardless if it’s predictable; compare this to “27 Dresses”, where the characters are all idiots or jerks and we’re expected to enjoy the happy ending when it’s not deserved.
And “J”, c’mon, don’t tell me that you haven’t been attracted to stereotypical guy movies as well. Hell, you just mentioned ‘The Taking of Pelham 123″- lemme guess, there’s a bad guy and the good guy, there are hostages, some people are killed and the bad guy is taken down, correct? (According to Wikipedia, I am!). If it’s not your cup of tea to enjoy this movie, that’s fine (I’m normally the same way), but don’t talk all high and mighty and believe that your type of films are better than what someone else likes.

Let’s hope this strong opening by an audience made up of 73% women will YET AGAIN prove to remind studios that films NOT made for 18-24 year old males can do extremely well (hate to use “Sex and the City – The Movie” yet again as an example but it is a shining one). The word in Hollywood is that studios are not going to greenlight these films because “women don’t go to the movies on a Friday night.” Hopefully “The Proposal”’s strong opening will open their eyes.

  • Vince

Sorry J, I was referring to Matt, not you. You make an extremely valid,well-thought out point and I respect that.

  • EEK

Glad to see that a primarily female audience helped this film to its strong opening weekend. Apparently Hollywood is putting the “kabash” on more “female-oriented” films because inexplicably they don’t feel there is a sufficient audience for them, that somehow “Sex and the City – The Movie” and similar box office hits were some weird anomoly. Let’s hope that successes like “The Proposal” make the Hollywood Geniuses sit up and take notice that not all films have to be geared solely to 14-24 year old males.

  • Lola

Loved this movie!! The best of the summer so far.
Betty White is a joy to watch. If they ever make a movoe from those Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum novels, I hope Betty will play Grandma Masure and Sandra Bullock will play Stephanie Plum.

  • lola

I also meant to add…that Monique should definately play Lula. Does anyone else out there enjoy those Evanovich books as much as I do?
I’m anxiously waiting on the movie.

  • patty

For all those guys sick of playing the bar scene and would just like to find a nice mature woman to grow old with, I do believe your wishes have been granted. **** AgelessDate Com **** is what you are looking for. No more hunting. It’s time for you to be the Prey.

  • Vince

Ok, I’m gonna put the kibosh on this whole “They don’t make enough movies for WOMEN” thing.
First off, you know why studios make films for the teenager/male crowd? Because they’re the one’s with the most disposable income to see the movie in the first place! Yes, there’s a double standard- there are constant films made for guys while few have that same pull for girls. But here’s the thing- you aren’t forced to watch only those movies made for you. Which is why the biggest hits this year are the ones that have appeal to all genders and ages. Look at “Gran Torino”, that’s not just a guy film, that’s for anyone who’s felt disrespected or unappreciated. “Taken” didn’t succeed because every guy ever went to see it- girls were drawn to the action and the characters too.
If you don’t want to check out these films and complain about how “there are no movies for women wah wah!!!” be my guest. There’ll be dozens of “Bride Wars” to come for you to enjoy.

  • Adam

I keep hearing good things about The Proposal, so its great it succeeded.
But I’m baffled by how good Year One did. Is everyone still really into Cera’s act?

  • Vince

    Seriously, last comment.
Movies might be geared towards, but they rarely are made for a specific audience. You’ll never see something like “Transformers” or “Wolverine” have a 73 percent male viewship, even though they are largely geared towards the male audience, unlike say “Twilight” where 75 percent was female. So, in a way, asking for a film that strictly adheres to the female audience is a bit close-minded and ironically similar to how “Hollywood” supposedly is by denying women of female-oriented films. You’ll have a “Street Fighter” here or there with 80% males, but that’s the exception not the rule.
My point is that no one’s truly getting the short end of the stick here- we men might have these films directed towards us specifically, but they appeal broadly. Films for female audiences can be the same way too- not every film made “just for the girls” will automatically not appeal to the other sex as well.

  • monamoni

just there!! i think the hype fo the movie is too much.

  • bobjustbob

I’ve always like Sandra B. (Practical Magic and While You Were Sleeping 2 of my favs of hers). Maybe now Hollywood will realise Sandra is underated, that she’s the true comedy queen/sweetheart of Hollywood, not the overated-mediocre Jennifer Aniston who can’t open a movie alone (Management anyone??). SB’s success is her own, she did not get her roles or attention by being with Brad Pitt, hope Hollywood takes note of this and bumps JA from her non-deserving perch

  • candy

Ahh I always liked Sandra B, good for her. Yeah I too hope Hollywood pushes Jennifer Aniston aside, enough with her lame acting and movies (how she gets roles when she plays Rachel in each one is beyond me) and they put Sandra B. in more movies, she’s so much more likeable.
