David Letterman protest: On the scene as Sarah Palin supporters sound off in New York

Late-show-protest-1_l A larger-than-usual crowd gathered across the street from New York’s Ed Sullivan Theatre today — but they weren’t tourists looking for tickets to David Letterman’s Late Show. Rather, dozens of protesters holding signs reading “Dirty Ole Man” or “We are ALL the Palins,” showed up to urge CBS to penalize, suspend, or just outright fire Letterman for his self-admitted “flawed” sexually charged joke about Sarah Palin’s daughter. “I’m outraged,” said protester Josephine Sarno, who held a sign reading “Over the line, Dave.” “It was a low blow. I’m insulted for women. I’m insulted for children. I’m insulted for families. I’m insulted.”

Other protesters took a more blunt approach, screaming for surrounding gawkers to take their children home to “keep them safe from David Letterman’s mouth!” And most at the scene were unwilling to accept the talk show host’s two apologies to the Alaska governor. (Earlier today, before the protest began, Palin accepted Letterman’s apology.) “I think he was sincerely sorry that his joke had got him into trouble,” said Susan, a protester who held a sign that read “We’re Not Gonna Take It Anymore.” “I think apologies are wonderful and I hope he feels in his heart sorry for what he did. But it’s not okay enough for me. It seems like the only group that’s okay to bash all you want is pro-life women. You can say anything ugly you want. You can drag us through the mud, and nobody cares.” Although many were demanding Letterman’s termination, others were just hoping that CBS would make an example of the talk show host, much like MSNBC did when the network suspended David Shuster last year for suggesting that the Clintons had “pimped out” their daughter, Chelsea. “Is it okay because Bristol Palin had a baby, it’s okay now to drag her through the mud?” said Susan. “Barack Obama’s mom was [a teen] when she got pregnant with him. Is it okay to make jokes about her and his conception? It’s not right.”

Just feet away from the protesters, however, a group of Letterman supporters gathered with their own smattering of signs, like “You lost, now go away” and “Sarah needs a life.” And although one supporter seemed intent on hamming it up for cameras — he spent most of the protest thrashing on the floor while screaming — others had a more tactile approach. Two supporters, Tracy Barber and David Heller, expressed disappointment that Palin would accuse Letterman of making a joke about statutory rape when her own legislation forced rape victims to pay for their rape kits, as many news outlets reported during last year’s election. “Just the idea that Palin is pro-woman [is ridiculous], you know?” Barber said. “We love David Letterman. He’s a New York institution. And we believe that free speech is always more important than whether or not it’s in taste.”

But not everyone was so diplomatic. Said an attendee who preferred to remain anonymous: “She should be thankful that Dave or anybody said anything about her to keep her name in the papers…. I think she should keep her mouth shut, go back to Alaska, and maybe take a few of the Republicans that are here back with her.”

Forgot about the rape kit thing. Yikes.
And as for Dave “insulting” women, please. All he did was insult Sarah Palin, who has been a national joke for awhile now.

  • Buster Hummp

The woman is an elected Governor of Alaska. Notice the media never gives her that title. It was always , Mr. Bush, never president as they apply it to BO. Letterman is obsessed with her and after seeing his wife I know why. Plus, he knocked up a woman when he was 57 and waited 5 years to marry his kids momma baby after he had to show a birth certificate at the academy. Didn’t want little Harry called a little ssssssobb.

  • Dave

What’s white, 4 inches long, and frequently found in children’s diapers?
    Dave Letterman’s finger.

  • Jimimosey

Give it a rest. She should be grateful for Dave giving her some air time. These are the same weens that believe that Pres. Obama is not a US citizen. The gov will need Dave if she runs for President and she seems to have forgotten that.

  • couchgrouch

Palin’s daughter got knocked up while underage by some white trash goofball. they were gonna marry before the election…lo and behold, election over, wedding off. Bristol’s all over tv, so’s her Gump-ish baby daddy. hell, he says Palin knew he was having underage sex with her in Palin’s house. that entire Jerry Springer brood is ripe for comedy. right wingers are seriously scary. why expect different…most of them are religious.

These women have too much time on their hands. A demonstration for a late night bad joke? Give me a break. I don’t have an opinion on Sarah Palin either way, but this is not newsworthy. These women are looking for attention. Leave Dave alone. He apologized, she accepted. End of story.

  • Lisa

David Letterman is so not a dirty old man. It was a joke….Sara P…get a life…right wing lovers go home and clean out your own closet.

  • Danette

David Letterman makes me sick. He has for a long time!Fire Him!I see no difference between the remarks “Nappy Headed Ho or Slutty Flight attendant!

  • Dave

Barack Obama is the child of a former unmarried teenage mother. When is Letterman going to dust off the jokes about how loose Obama’s mama is? Hmmm??

  • nalin

    Sarah is dumb hot.

A poster on another site said that Willow wasn’t actually at the game either. Has ANYBODY done any fact-checking on this thing? If Willow wasn’t at the game and somebody publishes that, we can have a whole ‘nother round of this circus. Does anybody know, either way?

  • WWP

Oh God this is funny. Now the Palin fantatics are just totally embarassing themselves. Like three dozen tools desperate to get on TV makes a “protest”. LOL….

  • Liz

What if a comedian made a similar joke about Obama’s daughters? (like THAT would ever happen!) You libs would be ranting and raving. Always a double standard with you people! The “joke” was mean spirited, nothing funny about it and I don’t give a rats behind which daughter the joke was about, it was disgusting!

  • louise carey

i don’t watch letterman but didn’t he “knock up” a young woman and wait years to make his child ligitament??
i am glad NOW is finally standing up for a woman they probably disagree with but they did the right thing.

  • Sarah

Yeah, the idea that Sarah Palin is a champion of women is laughable at best. She’s a member of a party that wants females to kept as ignorant as possible. While she was certainly able to achieve that in her own life and with her own ignorant loser knocked-up daughter, really, the rest of the female species can really do without her brand of help.

  • Thinman

Dave……….the best joke ever!! Keep up the good work.

  • Jane

David Letterman should be fired. There are lines that one should not cross, even bya comedian. David is scared too death of Sarah Palin. It’s time he get a life and get over his fear of her and stop the jokes about her and her beautiful family. He wouldn’t like it if someone referred to his son getting raped by the “Rod” during the 7th inning stretch. After all, wasn’t this child born out of wedlock? So, in other words, David has put his own son out there for jokes too, right? Guess it’s open field for him too.(Like they say about Sarah putting her children out in the public for jokes.) Get a life! It’s time for Letterman to step down or CBS to fire him and get someone on Late Night Show that makes it worth while staying up at night to watch. Letterman’s washed up and gives CBS a BAD NAME. CBS will NEVER be on again in my house, nor many of my friend’s house, as long as Letterman is still on it. Go away David. We need someone new for the Late Show. Someone with Class.

  • Frankie

Dave is a stellar late-night talent, a money-making machine for CBS. He’s not going anywhere. As an earlier poster has written… he made a joke, got some heat and apologized. The apology was accepted. Can we all move along now, boys and girls? It’s America. Free speech, all that. Palin’s a Moron. These Palin supporters – and parochial zealots – are very small-minded, as is she. It’s yet another GLARING example of how limited our society is in this country. There are MUCH larger issues to address, people. Leave Dave alone. Get a life. Put on your fanny-pack and go back to the mall.

  • Michael

Republicans just get dumber and dumber. Must be the same tea-bagger crowd.

  • Joanne600

If Sarah Palin is such a national joke, why does the press continually try to knock her down? If she’s such a moron, they should ignore her. The story about the rape kits is false anyway. In 2000, then Governor Tony Knowles, a Democrat, signed legislation making the local police pay for rape kits. The Wasilla police, where Palin was then Mayor, wanted to bill the victims’ insurance policies. However, there is no evidence that anyone was ever billed for a rape kit. Stupid decision by police chief, but it never happened.

  • Dana in NYC

The Palins publicized their children and then cry foul when the public (including David Letterman) comments on them. How was Dave supposed to know all the children weren’t with them on this NYC jaunt? The Palins have a documented history of including the whole family on these junkets and getting the state or someone else to pay for it. Dave was talking about Ms. Abstinence Bristol and she has chosen to step to the public stage herself. If you can’t take the heat get out of the kitchen. The Palins will do ANYTHING to stay in the news and that has ALWAYS included “pimping” their children for publicity. Why else do we know all their names and ages? Dave needs to stop apologizing and tell better jokes. Sarah and Todd need to stop dragging their kids into the Palin Show and simply accept the apology. But there isn’t enough publicity in that, is there?

  • Anastasia

I don’t think David Letterman would find it funny at all if someone degraded his son. I’m no Sara Palin fan but fair is fair. I’m with Ms Palin on this one. I stopped watching Letterman awhile ago because I believe his comments many times now are just creepy and vulgar. This just proves my point. I don’t think Letterman is a dirty ole man but he needs to clean up his act. I like edgy humor but pointed at the right topic/person.

  • kr

Liz, come on. All the late-night comedians made insulting jokes about Chelsea Clinton. The Obama girls just haven’t done anything funny or stupid yet. They will, and the jokes will fly. Who knew we were going to see the dawn of conservatives going PC and playing the victim? Maybe SP really has come up with a new idea.

  • MG

Since Letterman likes to joke about people who are knocked-up, I guess he will be making jokes about his girlfriend (now his wife) and Obama’s mother, who got knocked up as a teen. And for those people who have disparaging remarks about Sarah Palin, you do not have a clue what you are talking about. Do your homework. She is a smart, popular governor who outshines most people we have in politics now! And if you do not know this, then continue to drink your kool-aid…it goes good with that pork they are shoving down your throat. And of course, continue to watch the lame stream media.

  • DavidJ

I wonder how many of these righteous, noble conservatives laughed back when Limbaugh called 13 year-old Chelsea a dog?
Yeah, I’m guessing most of them.

  • Diaa

Mr. Letterman is quite the master of ‘timing’, isn’t he?
He knew there would have been thousands of protestors there if not for his very carefully timed second apology. (The only one that really counted)
Thanks to NOW – and to Dave’s mom! – for standing up for the Palins – and for us!

  • Jane

I can’t believe what I am reading on this site. It reminds me of the words, “crucify him”..in the Bible. Why is it, you people do not like anyone who represents purity, cleanliness, goodness, righteousness? What is it with you people, that the dirtier the better?(be it in actions, words or physical appearances) Don’t want to be in your shoes when you die. Think about it. Sarah Palin and all that she stands for is clean, pure and good. Yet you people cast stones at her. Why are you people afraid of her? Does she really make you look that bad? If so, perhaps you should clean up your act. Think about it before jumping in with more evil and hurtful words towards anything that represents Godliness. Anything that supports life over death…anything that supports cleanliness over filth…anything that supports health over illness…anything that supports evil over good. If you don’t believe in the hereafter, then I am sorry, for you have been wrongfully misguided.

  • fancypants

there were literally like 12 pro-palin protestors on the street, and then the whole thing fizzled. there were more cameramen than protestors! haha! please. letterman practically owns CBS. he’s not going anywhere until he’s good and ready and Thank God for that!!

  • Dave

    DavidJ
Explain how you equate advocating the fictional statutory rape of a child of one politician to someone referring to Chelsea as ugly. She was ugly by the way.

  • Joe the Drummer

Sarah Palin is just as crooked and slimy as every other politician out there. A politician is a politician. Stop putting her on a pedestal, people. She chose public life for her and her family and she needs to take the good with the bad.
