EW has confirmed that an origins story for the 1979 sci-fi classic is being actively developed. But who will direct the high-profile project? Ridley Scott planned to produce — but not direct. Instead, he tapped first time filmmaker Carl Rinsch, best known for his futuristic TV commercials. (It’s rumored Rinsch is romantically linked to Scott’s daughter, Jordan; neither returned calls for comment.) But Fox, the studio that owns the rights to the franchise, seems to have other ideas. Sources tell EW that the studio is not interested in greenlighting a prequel unless Scott himself takes the helm.

When this story first hit the rounds last week, the rumor was that Fox was gonna REMAKE Alien, not reboot it…I think it’s a little less sacrilege that the remake is not happening. Still, I’d feel a lot better if this was being helmed by Scott or Cameron.
…Although that commercial is actually pretty cool. And, in retrospect, it’s gonna be hard for ANY filmmaker to make something worse than those awful AVP movies. I’ll be cautiously optimistic on this one…
Huh? Alien prequel? Do we need an origin story of Ripley & co hauling space junk? Or the other story would be of the (monster) alien on the alien ship that Ripley’s team came across – which sounds like it’d be nearly unfilmable not having any human beings in it.
The idea of an Alien prequel, does have some modest legs – in the first film it was evident that the (state, whoever) powers that be had it in mind to go look for the alien – recall the ship computer, as well as Bishop the android seemed to consider the crew disposable, as opposed to the “specimen.” So there was likley some previous (unhappy and photogenic) contact with the “alien” species, as well as a resulting plan to go find out more, capture one, etc. And its not outside the realm to think that the “other” aliens (the one’s with space ships) might not have some filmable things, messages, warnings, etc. to contribute – perhaps they too tried to muck with the things, to the inevitable bad end (like in A4).

It woud seem that Alien vs. Predator was already a prequel to ALien. In AVP – Weyland was seen and in AVP:R – Yutani was seen. (The company that sent the Nostromo to LB426 is Weyland-Yutani.
If Ridley is near the project then I’m sure it’ll be worth seeing – at least once

I will pay to go see this prequel only if it is as good as part 1 and part 2. I would recommend to scratch the prison planet stuff and lets go back to the first and second movie so that we can find out where the aliens are coming from, it seemed that after the second movie, I couldn’t figure out why there was a 3rd and 4th movie ever made. I would recommend to get serious about this movie, if its just another special effects movie with aliens and predators jumping around I won’t even watch it on Blu Ray.

The only prequel worth telling is the story of the aliens before Ripley and company found them. What could you tell about Ripley’s ship? That said the story in part 1 was that the existence of the aliens was already known so maybe there is a story in there somewhere.
can hollywood stop recycling and come up with something ORIGINAL? wow, now that’s a concept!
All of the rumors I’ve heard state that it’s Tony Scott who is developing the prequel. But this story says it’s Ridley Scott. Which is it? (I’m hoping it’s Ridley.)
This movie looks awesome. I came across another action packed flick called ‘The Hurt Locker’. There’s a 2 min exclusive scene from the movie at: http://video.cineplex.com/?fr_story=7a5e75fa908a6c688ba8ce869c9a64e68a678a2c&rf=bm
I pitched an idea on paper about an Alien prequel a couple of years ago, and I should have sent it to Fox. It was about a six paragraph synopsis. Heres a bit of a summary. A space ship lands on the actual planet where the Aliens are from. On this planet not only are there several different species of Alien, but a civilization of humans who have been living among the aliens for decades (descendants of a previous space ship crash that had dozens of survivors). This civilization has learned a great deal about the Alien species and enlightens the newly crashed space ship survivors. For years they have been trying to prevent the Queens from being impregnated by a very nasty particular type of Alien that we’ve never seen. In so doing, they would prevent the laying of eggs, and the species would then die off. So is your mission. Someone with the right sci-fi imagination could create a fascinating planet where these creatures were from.
