EW has confirmed that an origins story for the 1979 sci-fi classic is being actively developed. But who will direct the high-profile project? Ridley Scott planned to produce — but not direct. Instead, he tapped first time filmmaker Carl Rinsch, best known for his futuristic TV commercials. (It’s rumored Rinsch is romantically linked to Scott’s daughter, Jordan; neither returned calls for comment.) But Fox, the studio that owns the rights to the franchise, seems to have other ideas. Sources tell EW that the studio is not interested in greenlighting a prequel unless Scott himself takes the helm.

When this story first hit the rounds last week, the rumor was that Fox was gonna REMAKE Alien, not reboot it…I think it’s a little less sacrilege that the remake is not happening. Still, I’d feel a lot better if this was being helmed by Scott or Cameron.
…Although that commercial is actually pretty cool. And, in retrospect, it’s gonna be hard for ANY filmmaker to make something worse than those awful AVP movies. I’ll be cautiously optimistic on this one…
Huh? Alien prequel? Do we need an origin story of Ripley & co hauling space junk? Or the other story would be of the (monster) alien on the alien ship that Ripley’s team came across – which sounds like it’d be nearly unfilmable not having any human beings in it.
The idea of an Alien prequel, does have some modest legs – in the first film it was evident that the (state, whoever) powers that be had it in mind to go look for the alien – recall the ship computer, as well as Bishop the android seemed to consider the crew disposable, as opposed to the “specimen.” So there was likley some previous (unhappy and photogenic) contact with the “alien” species, as well as a resulting plan to go find out more, capture one, etc. And its not outside the realm to think that the “other” aliens (the one’s with space ships) might not have some filmable things, messages, warnings, etc. to contribute – perhaps they too tried to muck with the things, to the inevitable bad end (like in A4).

It woud seem that Alien vs. Predator was already a prequel to ALien. In AVP – Weyland was seen and in AVP:R – Yutani was seen. (The company that sent the Nostromo to LB426 is Weyland-Yutani.
If Ridley is near the project then I’m sure it’ll be worth seeing – at least once

I will pay to go see this prequel only if it is as good as part 1 and part 2. I would recommend to scratch the prison planet stuff and lets go back to the first and second movie so that we can find out where the aliens are coming from, it seemed that after the second movie, I couldn’t figure out why there was a 3rd and 4th movie ever made. I would recommend to get serious about this movie, if its just another special effects movie with aliens and predators jumping around I won’t even watch it on Blu Ray.

The only prequel worth telling is the story of the aliens before Ripley and company found them. What could you tell about Ripley’s ship? That said the story in part 1 was that the existence of the aliens was already known so maybe there is a story in there somewhere.
can hollywood stop recycling and come up with something ORIGINAL? wow, now that’s a concept!
All of the rumors I’ve heard state that it’s Tony Scott who is developing the prequel. But this story says it’s Ridley Scott. Which is it? (I’m hoping it’s Ridley.)
This movie looks awesome. I came across another action packed flick called ‘The Hurt Locker’. There’s a 2 min exclusive scene from the movie at: http://video.cineplex.com/?fr_story=7a5e75fa908a6c688ba8ce869c9a64e68a678a2c&rf=bm
I pitched an idea on paper about an Alien prequel a couple of years ago, and I should have sent it to Fox. It was about a six paragraph synopsis. Heres a bit of a summary. A space ship lands on the actual planet where the Aliens are from. On this planet not only are there several different species of Alien, but a civilization of humans who have been living among the aliens for decades (descendants of a previous space ship crash that had dozens of survivors). This civilization has learned a great deal about the Alien species and enlightens the newly crashed space ship survivors. For years they have been trying to prevent the Queens from being impregnated by a very nasty particular type of Alien that we’ve never seen. In so doing, they would prevent the laying of eggs, and the species would then die off. So is your mission. Someone with the right sci-fi imagination could create a fascinating planet where these creatures were from.
Non-Alien fans need not comment here. Those who mistakenly believe that only the 1st 2 films are good need not comment here (Alien 3 is a very good movie, even if it is not excellent like the 1st 2).
An Alien prequel would be great if pulled off properly, and incorporates a storytelling narrative that shows us how the Xenomorph evolved and what kind of hellish environment spawned it, and also gives us further insights into the species’ behavior, natural defenses (acid for blood), reproductive cycle, and how it spread across known space in the Alien universe.
A focused director familiar with (or a respectful fan of) the material like Ridley Scott or James Cameron could easily pull it off (and both have publicly toyed with the idea of doing another Alien film prior to the AvP franchise), but they would have to stay away from the mentality of films like the AvP 1 & 2 (they do have some silly charms, but I do not consider them part of the canon of Alien 1-4).
Anyway, consider the alternative, if there is not a prequel there will probably be a reboot, and that would be about as useless as remaking Psycho…
I have always wanted to know the particulars of why Weyland-Yutani took the actions that they did in sending the Nostromo into such a dangerous situation in such a deceitful way. I have to admit that I am very curious to see how this all plays out. I am a die-hard Alien fan, but I don’t want to see anymore of the type of Alien films that we were seeing between 1992, and 1997. I sure as hell don’t want to see anymore Alien Vs. Predator films either. Hopefully, this film will end the franchise on a high note.
I don’t want a prequel — i want an Alien Sequel with Sigourney Weaver in it — who else agrees????

Okay, seriously!! What’s up with the double or triple posting of the same comments?
I’m naked
How can their be an Alien prequel? They didn’t even find the alien until the movie Alien.
This is fridiculous (not a typo)!
This movie must be made. I have seen this directors work and in his 30 second spots I am more engaged with them then most movies I have seen lately. And besides it will probably get made because Fox has never been one to pass up on easy money. CM-FU.
Perhaps the prequel they are planning on making is about how the alien ship, that the crew of the Nostromo discovered on the unnamed planet where the “distress signal” was emmanating from, encountered the alien monsters. The (fossilized)remains of the alien humanoid spacefarer, forever seated in his ship’s command module chair, with his chest revealing that something very malevalent had burst forth with incredible force, could not have been there longer than, say 10 or 20 years. The batteries or source of power for the ship’s radio still were working and sending out what was later learned to be a “distress call” instead of an SOS call. If I’m wrong, I think it is going to fairly difficult to come up with a story line that makes any type of sense.

1. I agree with the “sick of Alien vs Predator and Segorney Weaver ” sequels. It’s a dead horse
2. The first moment to drop my jaw in Alien was the spaceship that was “transporting” the alien embryo’s. Would love to see a story-line around that alien (which was never followed up on ) WHAT A KICK ASS SPACESHIP !!
3. IMHO the soundtrack from ALIEN was absolute genius and cannot/has not been re- created to full effect with the cinematography (which was also superbly directed)
4. Too much CGI ruined the sequels 3 and 4 + all AVP’s
