NBC announces fall schedule: 'Chuck' stays, 'Southland' moves to Fridays

NBC will premiere two new dramas and a single-camera comedy this fall and move the struggling cop series Southland to Fridays, where the net hopes it’ll have a better chance of surviving against Fox’s Dollhouse and ABC’s Ugly Betty. A special SNL Weekend Update will now run Thursdays at 8 p.m. to help prop up Amy Poehler’s ratings-challenged comedy Parks and Recreation at 8:30 p.m., while 30 Rock will temporarily move off the night to make way for Community, the new single-camera comedy about junior college life starring The Soup’s Joel McHale and Chevy Chase. The Tina Fey laugher will be back in the winter.

Also this fall, Trauma — a drama about paramedics — will air after another season of Heroes on Mondays, while Parenthood — a small-screen take on the 1989 Ron Howard film of the same name — will lead into Law & Order: SVU on Wednesdays. And nothing’s changed at 10 p.m. (at least, since NBC last shocked Hollywood with the news): The Jay Leno Show is still airing in the primetime slot once reserved for (mostly) serious dramas.

Chuck is back and on Mondays this winter, along with the new high-concept drama Day One, about life after a global catastrophe. Also coming midseason: A new sitcom about a New York single gal called 100 Questions on Tuesdays, the nursing drama Mercy on Wednesdays, and an hour-long reality show from Jerry Seinfeld called The Marriage Ref on Sundays. Not coming back: My Name is Earl and Medium. “A couple of our shows were aging as we were getting younger,” explains NBC Entertainment Co-Chairman Ben Silverman. “And the demand for Chuck that came from online and the advertising base made us have to pick up that show. The other shows, there was not that kind of attention or energy.”

What about Friday Night Lights? I know it won’t run until mid-season but why isn’t it up there?

  • Amy

Nooooo don’t move Southland to Fridays. I don’t want it to get cancelled.

    • andy

i know i love southland we need to fight to not lose this one it has the pontenial to run longer than ER!

  • Liz

    Courtney—that was my EXACT question!

  • Emmy

OMG I have to wait almost a YEAR to see Chuck again!!!! NBC, If you want to save money look to your execs paycheck!

  • Elizabeth

I almost had to jump out the window when I didn’t see 30 Rock listed…

  • shannon

can we please boycott leno every night so it will fail, and then we have more room for decent programming? can we start a campaign?

  • Kyle

I know the post by Courtney above just stated this, but I’m saying it as well: WHERE IS ‘FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS’ on the mid-season schedule?????????????????

  • Kyle

OK…had to leave another cuz just realized–so WHAT, ‘30 ROCK’ isn’t back until AFTER the Olympics are done? Why is it moved to ‘mid-season replacement’ status? Does that mean an abbreviated season???!! NBC wtf are you DOING????!?!!!!!!

  • AuntieMM

Okay…why save Chuck if you are a) waiting until January to air it and b) keeping it in the Monday time slot where it will be creamed again by a combination of House/AI or DWTS/BBT and HIMYM? All that work to save this show only to lose the momentum with this lame scheduling. I have no doubt that Chuck’s 13 episodes will be the last.

    • andy

who watched chuck? its a pretty lame concept anyways! i’ll stick to fox on monday with House!

  • Melinda65

According to TV Guide, FNL won’t air on NBC until SUMMER. Unless, of course, Leno’s show crashes and burns and they needs something to plug in that time slot…? I’m with Shannon; Nielsen viewers, don’t watch the show. The rest of us peons need to not DVR or watch it online. I’m not anti-Leno, other than I think that he’s unfunny and can’t stand to listen to him laugh at his own jokes. No, it’s NBC’s fault that he’s got the 9 PM (Central) time slot.

  • Marc

I’ve read elsewhere that Friday Night Lights will return to NBC in Summer 2010. I’d advise all of you to get DirecTV and watch it there!
I hope this Jay Leno experience FAILS!!!

  • Adam

NBC will fall, and it will be laughable. So many mistakes in that schedule, unlined by putting Law & Order and Southland on Fridays! Plus Leno every night…
    There’s no hope.

I hope this Leno experiment fails and that we will get some decent drama or comedy programming no reality tv in the time slot again. I hope NBC crashes and burns b/c they’ve pretty much gotten rid of their great programming and have moved their solid shows to midseason. Based on thier current schedule I can’t see myself making any time to watch anything they have to offer.

  • TL

NBC is just looking for excuses to keep Leno from jumping ships.

FNL won’t be back til summer? Ugh… I’d take the Taylors over the Lenos anyday.

  • Lance

Huh? When is 30 Rock coming back? Sounds pretty vague. This is the umpteenth strike against NBC and network TV in general.
An no NBC, I WON’T be watching craptastic Jay Leno at 10 o’clock…ever.

  • Don J

While it sucks that Chuck won’t return until 2010, at least we are getting 13 weeks with hopefully no breaks and I read there is still a possibility of more episodes being added.
Not crazy about Southland moving to Friday. It’s possible it could be going against Medium, if it does make the move to CBS.

  • bj

I agree why move chuck tell winter. Heroes yes but Chuck. people will forget unless UNLESS they use the Olympics to advertise the hell out of it. or they should do minisoods and put it between something

  • Albizzle

Save Chuck campaigns prevail! : http://talkoffame.com/?p=759

  • rockgolf

I’m not wishing this on the guy by any means, but if Jay Leno were to drop dead NBC would be toast. has any human being ever been responsible for a larger percentage of an entire network’s schedule?

  • trey

Maybe 30 rock isn’t coming back till mid-season because Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin are both making films right now? Alec is finishing up the Untitled Nancy Meyers comedy and Tina is supposedly filming Date Night soon, so maybe this was also done to accommodate their filming schedules? After all, 30 Rock may not be a ratings powerhouse, but it’s NBC’s crown jewel in terms of critical acclaim and award wins.

  • Phil

Why can’t they move Chuck into the Sunday 8:00 p.m. time slot in the winter? It would be up against some weaker competition, so they could actually see if it was the show or the time slot that needed work.

  • E

People who are freaking out about 30 Rock, I read somewhere that the delay has more to do with Tina and Alec’s busy schedules than anything else.

  • madduxfan

Community with Joel McHale looks pretty funny!! To see a brief clip, go to Joel’s website. I think it’s a good fit with The Office.

  • Trumpet138

30 Rock is not coming back midseason… it’s coming back after the six episodes or so of SNL Thursday run their course. At that time, the show in the 9:30 slot will move to 8 and 30 Rock will slide back in at 9:30.
And I have to ask, why is it bad to keep something in its current time slot (Chuck)? You’d complain if it got moved around too much as well… It’s not going to pick up new viewers in a new time slot, so keeping it where it was to keep the same viewers is a smart thing.

  • Jason

No reason to stress over 30 Rock. I’m sure it will be back at the end of October just like this past year. SNL will only occupy the 8-8:30 slot for about 6 weeks. In other news… I agree with Don. Chuck’s new time does suck, BUT the fact that the fans were able to fight for a new season is impressive. Also, if it is not starting until March, chances are we will get 13 straight weeks, which could potentially work out to gather a few more viewers. I also think that Day One (a high concept world disaster show) could get a lot of attention (similar to Heroes first season), serving as a far better follow-up to Chuck than the bleeding crap-fest that Heroes has become. This may be all it needs to survive, especially now that they have a smaller budget.

  • Amy

Wow, the only show I’ll be watching is Chuck, and that’s not till midseason. Thanks for all the free time, NBC. Also,
you should have given Chuck a better time.

  • KAYTEE

They are killing Southland by putting it on Friday. I really wanted that show to do well!

  • Jason

    I agree Trumpet.
