Exclusive interview: 'Laguna Beach' star Kristin Cavallari on joining 'The Hills'

Kristincavallari_l
Rumors have been circulating for weeks that former Laguna Beach star Kristin Cavallari was in talks to replace Lauren Conrad on The Hills. Now, EW can exclusively confirm that Cavallari will indeed be starring in MTV’s reality series. The 22-year old’s first appearance will be the May 31st season finale (she catches the bouquet at Heidi and Spencer’s wedding, natch) and she’ll appear in 10 episodes this fall. Cavallari, now a budding actress, is fully prepared to stir things up. “It’s a TV show,” she explains. “I’m not going into it like, ‘I’m going to make great friendships with these people.’ It’s work! And drama sells. I think that’s why they’re bringing me in, because I know what works.” Cavallari had plenty more to reveal in her exclusive interview with EW.

On why she’s coming back to reality TV:
“The goal for me is to get my fans excited about me again. When I first started out, I had a celebrity name but I didn’t have the acting skills I have now. If I have some buzz with my name again, I feel like it will only help.”

On rumors that producers are plotting a romance between her and Justin Bobby (which The Hills producers deny):
“I have no idea! [laughs] I don’t think MTV would be like, ‘Oh you’re dating him now. This is your boyfriend.’ But they might try and set up situations. I’m totally cool with that. Again, it’s a TV show and they need to make it entertaining.”

On how her version of The Hills will differ from Lauren’s:
“I’m a completely different person than Lauren. I have a lot more energy. I’m more outgoing. I’m a little more spontaneous. And she has a boyfriend so she’s not dating on the show. I’m very open to dating and finding a guy.”

On introducing Heidi and Spencer:
“It’s so funny. I guess it was 4 years ago. I was dating Brody [Jenner] and Spencer was Brody’s best friend. I had known Heidi when she was friends with Lauren when we were still filming Laguna Beach. Heidi was like, ‘Hook me up with someone. I wanna meet a guy.’ And Brody and I were kinda like, ‘Well, maybe Spencer?’ We’ll see what happens.’ So we all went on a double date and they just hit it off right away and now they’re married.”

For more from Cavallari, including her reunion with Laguna frenemy Lauren and her relationship with the rest of the cast, and to hear how producers plan to “put a new spin” on The Hills next fall, pick up the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly hitting stands this Friday.

So we can blame her for the Spencer/Heidi coupling? I get the torches; someone else find the pitchforks and the windmill.

  • The N

Well, at least those who had any illusions this show was anything near reality are now clear The Hills is a sitcom with lame plots and bad actors…And does Kristin Cavallari really have fans?? Really??

  • CJ

How lame. I read an article where she totally dissed the show and said she would never go on again. And now she’s back??!! To try and become an “actress”? How about actually working your way up and honing your craft? No – just back to reality. Ugghhh!

  • Tiffany

That doesn’t even make any sense. Heidi wasn’t on Laguna Beach. Lauren didn’t even meet Heidi until the first day of college. What the heck???

    • Kyle

Heidi was on the last episode or two of Laguna Beach season 2. She hung out with Lauren. If you search for Laguna Beach on YouTube there are clips of it.

  • Jessica

Actually Heidi was on one episode of Laguna that I remember. The night of the Fashion Show that Lauren put on when Jason kissed Jessica and Lauren got upset. Heidi was visiting from college where they met. She and Kristin walked the catwalk together. I do have to say, I LOVED Laguna Beach, but can’t stand watching the Hills. Heidi and Spencer make me want to barf.

  • Mike

Well, it will not be the same, but at least she is not presenting an illusion that “The Hills” is reality. As she says, it is a TV show. Also, on the second season on “Laguna Beach” Lauren was graduated but dating Jason who was in high school.

  • hut

    Good news. I like her.

ditched this show 2 seasons ago and im not tuning in to watch laurens sloppyseconds

  • Tina

    YEAHHH!!!
Finally make the hills more EXCITING!

  • Becca

    totally cannot believe this.
Never was a massive fan of Kristin in LB.

I love Kristin – she totally made the Laguna series! Lauren was so boring. It was shocking that they made her the star of the Laguna spin-off, but I’d also heard Kristin turned it down first. The Hills is a hit, but it was probably because someone gave Lauren a script to go by. She was much better on it than I expected and I’m happy for her success. But for me, the connection between real life friends & enemies on Laguna made it better than The Hills, where they set everything up – even Audrina, who was brought in to play the neighbor. I would’ve been happy with Lo, too – she was great on Laguna, as well and should’ve been brought in from the beginning. And for the record, Heidi was on one episode of Laguna – 2nd season, when Kristin was the narrator and Lauren dropped out of college (where she met Heidi, in San Fran) and moved back in with her folks in Laguna (that’s when she started dating Jason). I will definitely be watching The Hills!

Who cares? This isn’t reality TV. It’s stupid. THe only time I like this show is when they make complete fun of it on “The Soup”

  • DG

This show is trash. The economy is in shambles and all these girls can talk about is “finding a guy” and “who is dating who”

  • J

I will so not be watching. The show will never be the same without Lauren. I never liked Kristin on Laguna either. Too bad MTV; guess I will just stick with Whitney on The City.

  • Paul

Budding actress? she was in a couple episodes of something like Veronica Mars…she has not done much since she left and only reason she’s coming back is beacause she needs money and to try and become as popular as Lauren has.

  • SC

That sucks. I didn’t really get into Laguna Beach but when I did watch it I didn’t like Kristin at all. And the Hills is supposed to help out get her name out for real acting? Give me a break! Lame! If she thinks that she’ll be a “celebrity” from this she’s kidding herself. She’ll be just as much as a joke as Heidi and Spencer but maybe she’ll score a role in the next cheesy horror flick and then pose for playboy…

  • b

sadly i know this – heidi was on laguna beach because that show was still going on while lauren was in college. anyway, i will be watching because it’s like a bad car crash and i can’t look away.

  • Carol

I hate to admit that I watched Laguna Beach and Kristin was was most watchable character. I couldn’t understand her half the time with her ridiculous vally girl accent. It was extreme. I have NEVER watched The Hills because Lauren is a complete bore. She doesn’t smile and always looks grouchy and is fighting with someone. Maybe I might watch a litte with Kristen just to see if she would make it more interesting.

  • janaaaiowe

    I hate KRISTEN…AGH!!

  • No Hills, No City, No More!

At least Kristen is hotter the Lauren. Either way, nothing can save the show or make it interesting. Watching these people is like watching paint dry. I think a carrot has more personality than people on the show. If you ever feel like there is a funny moment in the show, its probably because you are watching a commercial break. The problems these people on the show have are not problems at all.

  • Jeannie

Once this season is over I won’t be watching it. I don’t like Kristin Cavallari at all. As for her being an actress now.. What has she been on?? NOTHING WORTH WATCHING I BET.

  • Matt

    YES!!!!!!
I love Kristin. She was offered the spin-off show first and will do it better than Lauren!
Kristin made Laguna Beach better when she took over that show. She will again make The Hills better when she takes it over!
Lets face it: Kristin is more entertaining than Lauren. I’m so excited!

  • Wonderful

This is great news. I was so tired of Lauren being so high and mighty when it came to Heidi. No I’m not a fan of Heidi’s either but I beleive that everyone makes mistakes and deserve second chance. I think it will be more pleasureable to watch. Great move MTV. Now if I could just get VH1 to give It and Talior Made their own show TV land would be prefect.

  • LL

The fact that she admits to being open to “creating drama” and that she’s cool with MTV setting up situations for the show just reveals to us that anything on the show that happens can be fictionalized and it’s not a true representation of herself.
Kristin is a wannabe actress with no skills trying to squeeze out every last bit of her already over 15 minutes of fame to be a “celebrity name” by being a fake, manipulated version of herself. If the MTV producers have to set her up to create drama and storylines, that just means that her normal, everyday life is already boring.

  • Matt

I like how they “cast” people for a so-called “reality show”. Sad. Good thing I don’t watch it!

  • Mo

I won’t be watching, but at least someone finally admitted to the general public that this is “dramatic tv” and not real life. She will be playing a character, but using her real name (which seems to be the only thing that separates “reality tv” and scripted network shows). So, at last someone finally just came out and said, “this is a show that is fueled by drama and I signed on to give it.” She gets points for at least being honest.

  • Snazzy in AZ

I have always admired Lauren as she transitioned in The Hills. This girl has morals, likes being dramafree and knows when to cut people out of her life. I never liked Kristin on Laguna Beach but as for entertainment, she is the “it factor” because she sure can stir things up … and quick.
Lauren, have fun with what life throws at you. Kristin, you suck but I only say that because I’m jealous.

What happened to MTv standing for Music Television which consisted of music videos and shows relating to music? How did it turn into what it is now … a reality pitstop?

  • Sarah

    I LOVE KRISTIN!!!
Now I will finally watch The Hills!

  • Justin

Seriously? People watch this stuff? I’ve seen a few episodes. Not too good. also, what is it about people just wanted to be famous? What about talent, career, skills, art? Come on, let’s get somem quality back.
