'Star Trek' grosses $7 million Thursday night

Categories: Box Office

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek is on its way to boldly going where no Star Trek movie has gone before: to a huge opening weekend. The film bowed at 7 p.m. Thursday night and grossed an impressive $7 million in 3,849 locations. Sure, those numbers were boosted by the geeky fanboys who were salivating to catch the movie as soon as possible. Still, such a great start should help propel Star Trek’s weekend gross to as high as $75 million. Quite impressive for a franchise that was considered dead a few years ago.

Update: Star Trek beams up $24 mil more at the box office on Friday

Star Trek was AWESOME! 90 million opening weekend easily.

  • John

I went with some friends. I’ve never really liked Star Trek before, but this movie was a ton of fun!

  • Gecko7

Hopefully they will invest in future Trek adventures.

The force is strong with this one

75 million isn’t that impressive anymore. Not for a $200+ film.

The movie was so good the execs at Paramount greenlit a sequel about THREE WEEKS AGO, before the movie made a penny. And since the film’s budget was 125-150 mil (not 200) it is definitely feasible that this movie will bring a hefty profit and secure at least a trilogy if not more. Great movie, I LOVED it!!!

    (140 million, not 200)
Reviews are exceptional, and do not dare doubt the power of the Trekkie. They will see the movie 3-5 times this weekend, and next. It might not break the wolverine first bow, but it has a chance to stick around the top ten for a while.

  • Chris

A fun movie to watch but a severe dissapointment if you’re a Star Trek fan.

  • Ken

It is a $130M film, not $200M. I am betting it’ll be over $100M for this opening weekend.

I loved this movie. As a very loyal Star Trek fan I was impressed with the movie plot and the characters! I will probably see it another 5 times!

  • Mrvin8

Not a great movie, but a thoroughly enjoyable one. They took just a wee bit too much poet license on Kirk’s youthful indiscretions, but like I said, quite a fun movie. Actually, I was rather surprised that traditionally cheap Paramount dumped as much money into this film as reported.

  • Mrvin8

btw, I’d give it a solid 3/4 stars.

  • Paul

Certainly a bit cheesy…Mr. Pine was excellent casting. He’s got most of Kirk’s affectations down cold. I love the dynamic between Spock and Ohura.

  • Nate

the movie was an all out fun rollecoaster ride that’ll probably only be top by Pixar’s UP and Harry Potter in quality.

This one is the best yet..Star Trek was never dead at my household. We still watch reruns of Star Trek..old and new ones.

  • Dduellman

Chris, I beg to differ. Star Trek fans will LOVE this movie. And movie goers who experience Trek for the first time will also love this movie. It’s fantastic.

  • Craig

I’m sad this film marks the death of Trek. This film leaves the establish Prime universe and relies on coincidences and overblown action sequences to drive the plot forward.

  • Ken

    Craig, don’t be stupid.

  • Ryan Jonasson

The execs loved the trailer so much they licensed the music so it could never be used in another trailer again. Wow.

  • Muzzer

Superb Film, a few coincidental pot devices but who cares?
    An instant Classic.

That’s a great start. I saw this movie in a pre-screening through a local radio station, but I’m going again on Saturday to see it again.
My main reason for seeing it again is to see that hot Chris’s. Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth are both nummy. I only saw him for about 4 seconds, but Chris Doohan isn’t hard on the eye’s either.

  • Michael

Live long and prosper. Incidentally scientists are planning a quantum singularity for earth starting around October.

“Quite impressive for a franchise that was considered dead a few years ago.” Not so impressive… the series was considered dead 40 years ago.

  • Antoinette

Saw it last night with about ten of my friends; all agreed it was awesome. My only real complaint? What the hell was Tyler Perry doing in there? That moment totally took me out of the moment, (as it were).

  • Brynna

AMAZING MOVIE>>>>>Can’t wait to see it again.

  • Guy B.

I’ve just come from watching this movie. The **WOW** factor is great. I’m a long time fan of Trek, and this is what Trek has needed for a long time. I so look foward to the next movies!!! Well Done!!!!

  • VegasDude

    ABSOLUTE “BRILLIANCE” – A lifelong fan…

  • Ashes

I just saw the movie!!!! Oh my god!!!!!! It was fantastic, i am a long time fan, but I dragged my friends along who hated Star Trek and they loved it too! JJ Abrams has completely suceeded in his goal of making this film for everyone! It was hilarious, the guy who plays Bones, got the character perfectly. A round of applause to everyone involved.

  • Green Ho

I’m drunk. More Sorian brandy pleeze…
