Summit Entertainment has confirmed that Hard Candy director David Slade will helm The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third installment in the series of movies based on Stephenie Meyer’s blockbuster books. Yesterday, EW reported that Slade had been in talks for the job. In a press release, the studio said that Slade — the edgy filmmaker behind Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night — will direct Eclipse, which has a screenplay by Melissa Rosenberg and will be released on June 30, 2010.

This is heartbreaking. How could Stephenie Meyer let this happen?? For many fans, Eclipse is the most important book of the series, and I thought she would fight for a movie that focuses on the complex relationships in it, not watch it be turned into some low-grade horror flick. Honestly, this guy terrifies me. If there is anything resembling 30 Days of Night in Eclipse, I will not watch it.
My issue: why do they keep calling it a saga? It’s not a saga, by definition a saga is a long, slowly meandering story that takes place over decades and generations, Twilight and it’s sequels don’t do this. Four years is not long enough to be a saga. Is it that hard to call it the Twilight series? Or is that just not dramatic enough for Stephenie Meyer?
Just like I said, since Eclipse has the most action in the saga it needs the most edge, looks like their doing good so far.
Confirmed? Wow…that’s gonna be…interesting.

I think he’s a good pick as Summit clearly is trying to broaden its fan base with a director with his background. I liked Hard Candy and LOVED his 30 days of Night. It was a great vampire film.

I didn’t saw 30 days of Night, so i can’t tell if it was a good movie. All I know is that they are making a huge mistake. Eclipse is not a “Vampire fight” movie. The center of the all story is Edward and Jacob fighting for Bella’s love. If they will focus only in the big fight, they will ruin the movie
i like the fact that all 4 books r coming to the big screen i can’t waite to see new moon and the rest of the books come to live on big screen it will be a huge treat and a huge success for auther herself as well as the cast members!
Emma, grow up.
I second Ashley. This is not a saga. It’s a series. You can call it a saga, doesn’t make it one in size, scope, quality, etc.
Having said that, I think they’ve made a good, edgy director selection. My only concern is that they’re REALLY rushing things. I don’t know how they’ll be able to shoot New Moon, promote it and then shoot Eclipse. I don’t know why they HAVE to get Eclipse done so early. I get that they probably don’t want to go up against Deathly Hallows in November 2010, but why not June 2011? I’d rather wait longer and have good films than have a half-baked film done sooner.
I can sorta understand Emma’s point. The series isn’t popular because it’s about vampires. It’s about the relationships. I hope that doesn’t get lost because they want to broaden the fan base.
I was hoping for the Juan Antonio Bayona rumors to be true.
I’m thrilled about this! I think that Chris Weitz and David Slade will make the movies excellent. I loved Twilight, but I felt that Catherine Hardwicke was weak as a director. I think that these two accomplished and wonderful directors will make this series great, plus it’s always great to have a director that’s done a vampire story before, even though they are vastly different. Epic win, IMO.
Unfortunately, part of the reason for rushing the movies is so that the actors who play the Vampires don’t age any more. We don’t want Robert Pattinson still playing Edward when he’s 26 or 28 years old. I’m not familiar with this new director at all. I wish they could have the same Director for all of them.
Kate, I agree with you about the direction, but I would add that there were problems with the screenplay as well. IMO, the book is always better than the movie, and there’s going to be things that just can’t be translated as well to film. I’m more worried that the screenplay will miss the mark than I am about the director. If the screenplay is good, I think David Slade will be able to bring wonderful things to the movie.
Call me cynical, but I think Summit hurrying the series has more to do with greed and them wanting to cash in on a fast buck than with them hoping to keep the actors looking the same. With makeup and such now, it’s not going to ruin an actor’s credibility to wait a year or two.

Did anybody else read this and think David Spade is directing? The comic from Rules of Engagement! I was a little perturbed!! He’s a director, hard candy was a drama, give him a break! The studio will ultimately decide what it looks like.

YEAAAAAAAHHHH!!!
I do not know who this director is, but I am sure that as long as he remembers that the main point of Eclipse is the relationship between Edward Bella and Jacob. The battle between the vampires from Seatle and the Cullens with the wolves is only at the end. If he can keep the relationship as the main priotity it will be a great movie. I do not know why people are getting all upset on whether something is a saga or a series, because does it really matter? I love this…whatever you want to call it…and I hope that they make BD because you cannot finsh the story without it. Can’t wait!!
Amanda, your’s was the best comment in this page. Thank you for thinking like me.
I for one am thrilled. I loved Hard Candy (which was a drama, not horror) and I am simply going to wait until I see some product before I judge (as should everyone else!).
Just because he did a horror movie at one point in time does not mean that he cannot do other genres. Sam Raimi has done many horror movies but did the Spiderman movies, for one example. If you have not seen Hard Candy, I highly recommend it. The characterization is fantastic. I think this director will do a great job. Who really cares if it is a saga or series? Something else for someone to about I guess. Cause apparently there are not enough reasons to hate this series. And they have to make the movies fast because the vampires cannot age. And Breaking Dawn is already in pre-production, so it is getting made.

I think I will be nervous with whomever was selected to direct “Eclipse” as it is my favorite in the series. Who knows, this David Slade may be a good choice. I haven’t seen “Hard Candy” so this gives me an incentive to do so.
yeah i think a really screenplay is what would make the movie i thought that twilight screen play was a piece of scrap i have no clue who this new director is but i am going to rent hard candy 30 days was in theatre and i had no interest to see it so lets go hunting i wanna see his work which i never would have looked at, but there is nothing we can do about him right now cause summit has already
signed the contract. The screen writer seem weak to me but everybody keep mentioning her name like she is suppose to be good
No,no,no,no!!!! Who the hell is this guy???? What happened to Antonio Bayona? He was absolutely perfect!!!
Eclipse was the most boring book in the series. I could hardly get through it. I love 30 Days of Night, maybe this guy can make it interesting. Yay.
Eclipse is my favorite book. I think it’s more widely seen as the best of the 3- atleast from the reviews I’ve read. It’s a very interesting choice for a director…I’m excited but very nervous.
Exactly…It is the best one in the series… The book is way more than just the battle, there is so much emotional stuff that happens and I hope they convey it correctly!
He directed hard Candy a character based drama. And a great action packed horror film. He will get Eclipse just right.
While I truely loved ‘Hard Candy,’ I was excited to see that Bayona was in contention for the director’s seat. I really want to see his take on the book. I can only hope he does ‘Breaking Dawn.’
The only good thing about this piece of news is that with this movies being made and release back to black, they’ll be out of sight, out of mind sooner than I first fear and we can all then breathe a sigh of relief and move on to “actual” good, wholesome entertainment.
are they going to have the same actor and actresses play the characters in the movie (Twilight and new moon) ?
