'17 Again' easily dominates the Friday box office with $9.5 mil

Categories: Box Office

The Zac Efron high school body-swap comedy cruised easily to the top of the box office heap on Friday, raking in an estimated $9.5 million from 3,255 theaters. This puts it on track for a $28 million opening weekend haul, which is roughly the same as the 2007 musical Hairspray, which co-starred Efron, but far short of the $42 million bow for last year’s High School Musical 3: Senior Year. Despite generally positive reviews, the Russell Crowe-Ben Affleck thriller State of Play ran a distant second, taking in $4.6 million, which puts it on pace for an underwhelming $14 million weekend. Among films opening wide this weekend, Crank High Voltage fell to the back of the pack, taking in $2.7 million. See the complete breakdown below and come back on Sunday for a full weekend recap in the Box Office Report.

1. 17 Again — $9.5 million
2. State of Play — $4.6 million
3. Hannah Montana: The Movie — $4 million
4. Fast and Furious — $3.8 million
5. Monsters Vs. Aliens — $3.6 million
6. Crank High Voltage — $2.7 million
7. Observe and Report — $1.4 million
8. The Haunting in Connecticut — $1.1 million
9. Knowing — $1.1 million
10. I Love You, Man — $1.1 million

State of Play- The adult oriented political thriller is become a dead genre.

Yeah, chuck, it’s definitely a dead genre…cause, you know, Michael Clayton was such a huge flop.

It is unfortunate that dramas are falling by the wayside. “State of Play” is a very good movie and deserves a bigger audience than it is likely to get.

No competition and a poorish box office. Efron really doesnt have the staying power.

I think 17 Again did so well because a lot of kids were on school break this week due to the Easter holiday.

Saw “State of Play” Friday night. Sold out crowd, and at the end, overheard a ton of people saying they loved it. (I did, too!)

The lady at our theater box office said State of Play was sold out Friday night, but the matinee showings were doing slow business. We went to see it anyway. There was about 42 other people in the theater as the preview trailers unfolded. All the trailers (My Sister’s Keeper, Funny People, and one other sad, depressing movie) except for Wolverine, looked horrific. The actual movie, State of Play, was horrific. It was a complete snoozefest. I knew we had made a mistake when I looked around and saw a small audience composed of 65+ year olds scattered around the theater. The lesson I learned is if you are the lone young couple in a sea of 65 year olds, its probably not the movie you want to see. So, having already seen Monsters vs Aliens ( the big Saturday matinee winner here) and I Love You, Man, we got tickets for a Spanish film called Sin Nombre and trust me people will know the name of this little film soon. It was one amazing journey! I sat on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Zac Efron is just another vapid by-the-numbers pretty boy shoved down our collective throats by undeserved hype and Disney. No one will remember his name in five years.

Zac Efron did a really good job in 17 Again. A new and better direction away from musicals :D People should really watch it..

I honestly think that 17 Again was a great movie. Sure it used a familiar formula, but the way it was done was fun to watch! All the characters were hilarious in their own way.

I remember “Michael Clayton” and I think people will come out to see movies if they are any good. “Clayton” was not. It had good performances, but the movie was boring. “State of Play”, however? Fantastic. Loved it. Great story, great actors, even the jokes were kinda funny.
Eventually, the wife and I will go see “17 Again” because it looks funny. its the type of movie that we dont watch because critics are telling us to, or not to, but we watch because we like to laugh at silly things. And it looks fun and silly.

All disney fans need a reality check. Each time they watch one of their mindless films they lose IQ. It’s no wonder none of them can hold themselves up in an arguement.

“State of Play” is just another movie in the recent line of smart, adult entertainment being ignored at the box office. Just another sign the kids, teens and adults who don’t want to think during a movie rule the theaters now. Hopefully that doesn’t mean those of us who want intelligent, well-acted entertainment will lose out in the future.
