I respect what Zach has done. I understand not wanting to be type cast. Christopher Atkins, a huge heart throb at the time, was picked to be in the original and screwed up (he was stoned at a meeting with directors)which is completely different than what happened with Zach Efron. However, Kevin Bacon got the role and where is Chris Atkins now. I do hope Zach made the right decision. Best of luck to Zach and Chace!

I respect his desire to be taken more seriously. If Leonardo DiCaprio is his idol, then he does need to do a breakout role in a different genre. Musicals are fun, and you need lots of talent, but they are not the same waulity of acting that a heavier drama would need. He wants more experience and a platform to show his acting chops and that is honorable. He already has plenty of money from the HSM franchise, so it's now about crafting himself into the kind of artist he wants to be. In interviews, he seems really intelligent and down to earth, and completely likable. On SNL, I heard he memorized all his lines, didn't need cue cards much, and had a sense of humor about himself. Garnered soem big points from me! All the best to him!

as an actor myself, I think Zac Efron made a very wise decision. If he wants to be considered a serious actor than he has to go for roles that are unique and challenging. He doesn't want to be remembered as a teen heartthrob who only did musicals....I say good for him!

I think Zac made a smart move not doing Footloose. He'd be washed up before he knows it because remakes of such popular films is dangerous grounds. Directors will see him as a dance act rather then the talented actor he is.

Too bad. But two hotties could step right in. Mitch Hewer from "Skins" would take America by storm. Or Neil Haskell from "So You Think You Can Dance" two years ago. He was hot. He can dance. And he has presence. So does Hewer.

He could have done footloose and this new movie. He could have somehow worked in both movies since this new movie starts pre-production in June or JUly and footloose was going to start pre-producttion in the fall I believe around December. Bad move Zac.

Fred Astaire didn't become a legend by "Shaking Things UP." It was by doing what he was good at. If really wants to become a legend he should stick to musicals. He could easily do Footloose, and Fame remake, and he could star in SPRING AWAKENING movie. THAT would be a challenging role both vocally and acting-wise. Then he could start trying to get real roles. Dumb! His agent gave him some bad advice here.

i agree with the other posters talking about how footloose shouldn't be remade in the first place. i'm sorry, but can't hollywood writers/studios come up with any original ideas these days? as for footloose, kevin bacon did it first and he did it best. and while you're at it, leave karate kid, weird science, goonies, E.T., breakfast club and about a million others alone. they don't need to be remade - they are '80s classics. let them *stay* '80s classics. stop trying to remake my childhood faves, already!
