'Ghostbusters III': Harold Ramis offers details, says original cast will be back

Categories: Movie Biz

Earlier this week at ShoWest, Sony Pictures’ Rory Bruer confirmed long-circulating rumors that the studio was pursuing a third installment of Ghostbusters. You won’t hear Harold Ramis contradicting him. According to Ramis, who cowrote and starred in the first two Ghostbusters, a third journey into the comedic supernatural is in the cards. And yes, the original cast will return: Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, and even the elusive Bill Murray. “Everybody said
they’d do it,” says Ramis, who doesn’t intend to direct Ghostbusters III. “They’ll be looking at younger actors
[for the lead roles], I’m sure. But we’ll be in it as mentors or
advisers. I think the first one captured something that hadn’t been seen for a
long time: the combination of scary movies and smart broad comedy. That was a great comic edge to play. Fortunately, we stopped before we
beat it into the ground. If we’d done a third one then, no one would
want to see one now, I think, cause we were headin’ downhill, even with
the second one,” he laughs. “We’ll see, everyone’s
gonna have to love the [Ghostbusters III] script to move it forward.”

But it might be a while before anyone sees the screenplay. Gene Stupinksy and Lee Eisenberg, the exec-producers of The Office who also cowrote June’s upcoming Year One with Ramis, are toiling away on a draft, but because “they work full-time on The Office, the script process is
slow,” says Ramis. “Even if there was a great script by the end of the summer, it
would be a year before [we could go into production]. It’s a big movie. Lots of prep.” As for the plot, it won’t have anything to do with the “Ghostbusters Go to Hell” premise that Aykroyd had cooked up in the ’90s. (At the time, he and Ramis were thinking of casting Chris Farley, Chris Rock, and Ben Stiller.) “As soon as
Danny said it, I thought that was really funny. But now there’s a new
concept,” Ramis says. “And it’s interesting, beyond the kind of mythology of it,
there’s a personal story that’s pretty grounded.”

What about Sigourney Weaver? She didn’t participate in the video game, which obviously is a different story completely. Will she be in the movie? How about Annie Potts? I want EVERYONE to be in it, including Dana and Janine.

Awesome! I wonder how this will figure in with the continuity of the video game they’re releasing (which has a script written by Ramis and Akroyd)?
Regardless, can’t wait to see it.
In the meantime, I think I’ll be sticking to “A Fistful of Billy Ray Cyrus”:

Seconding the call for Annie Potts. I want Janine too, please. (But for the love of God, drop the Louis/Janine thing. Please?)

The new game looks great, and should help to introduce the Ghostbusters to a younger audience. I can’t wait for a third movie. Finally you can say “I’ve been slimed!”, and people will know what you are talking about!

Ghostbusters was a big thing when I was a kid. I loved those movies. Great to see it coming around again. I can’t wait to see the original cast all fat and old.

  • Cleetus

Get Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts too.

I guess I’m one of the few people who REALLY liked “Ghostbusters II” (Peter MacNicol was GREAT.)

    Can’t Wait for the 3rd one…

Don’t forget Bobby Brown as the doorman who wanted to get his little brother a proton pack. While everyone else has moved on, Bobby can still be a doorman. Call it cinematic karma.

I want to see the following as the new group of Ghostbusters:
    Bill Hader
    Sean Williams Scott (Stifler)
    Jason Segel
    Dave Chapelle
Original group gets kidnapped or whatever and held in another dimension, new guys have to save them. It practically writes itself.

  • Jack Burton

    Id like to see
    Ryan Reynolds
    Jim Parsons(Sheldon from big bang)
    Paul Rudd
    Craig Robinson(Darryl from office)
Ryan Reynolds could be a grown up Oscar and they bring back Ray Parker Jr. for the sound track

  • Jack

    Sean William Scott
    Bill Hader
    Craig Robinson
    Jason Segal
    Danny McBride

  • MattyZee

A character driven scary comedy = paydirt. Seth Rogen as lovechild of Louis and Janine anyone?
It’s a pity that the writers are so busy and we won’t see the film sooner than later. Then again it allows more time for buzz to build and a wider audience to be built. An adult Oscar could be the key to tying the three films together… shall be interesting!

I’d like to see the original cast be the leads rather than young new people. I don’t want NEW ghostbusters I want THE Ghostbusters.

  • luke

I wish Akroyd, Hudson, Murray and Ramis would be in the lead roles. I’m bummed to hear that younger actors will be given the lead roles!!

  • side3

Rick Moranis is on board? I thought he had left showbiz for the most part…according to IMDB, he hasn’t done a live action movie or TV (as opposed to voicing a character for a cartoon) since 1997….and this is by choice…

  • Gozer

Please don’t put Jack Black in this movie ! He cannot play anyone but Jack Black in any role he is in. Not funny.

  • Chris Wood

I’m hoping for any of these guys…
    Bill Hader
    Paul Rudd
    Jason Segal
    Ben Stiller
    Robert Downey Jr.

  • dan

Missy, you sure started a LOT of internet rumors. Did Ramis specifically say that Moranis is coming back? Because when Ramis says “everybody” he may mean the original four Ghostbusters. Details, please!

  • craptaculous

janine! Annie Potts! Please! She was so awesome to me as a kid! She was a ghostbuster, as far as I was concerned. Janine!

  • JJT

I can’t wait until “Ghostbusters III”, I am a HUGE fan 1 & 2 so much(So both in the movie theater back in 1984 & 1989)and the video game is AWESOME! I know: Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, Sigourney Weaver, Ivan Reitman and hopefully Rick Moranis will do things RIGHT. This is a very popular and powerful franchise and you have to give what the fans want, so I am 100% ready to believe them again!
