DreamWorks Animation’s 3-D extravaganza Monsters vs. Aliens started off the weekend with a strong gross of $16.7 million on Friday. Thus, the animated family film is on track to bank as much as $60 mil over the course of the weekend, which would be in line with its great expectations. The Haunting in Connecticut also opened really well, exceeding its projected figures with $9.6 mil on its first day. But the weekend’s other big new movie, 12 Rounds, was way back with a mere $1.8 mil. Friday’s totals are below, and please check back here on Sunday for a full weekend recap in the Box Office Report.
1. Monsters vs. Aliens — $16.7 mil
2. The Haunting in Connecticut — $9.6 mil
3. Knowing — $4.6 mil
4. I Love You, Man — $4 mil
5. Duplicity — $2.3 mil
6. 12 Rounds — $1.8 mil
7. Race to Witch Mountain — $1.5 mil

A $16.7 million gross on Friday means it will certainly not gross near $60 million. More like $50 million, at the most.
“Monsters vs. Aliens”. Save your money for the video. Thin, trite plot barely amused my kids (ages 10 and 6). Very little entertainment value. A real disappointment from Dreamworks. My opinion: 1/2 star.
BadProjectionsRich,
You’re probably going to be non-family movie statistics.
16.7 mil Friday puts it on track to about 57-61mil for a family flick, mainly because Saturdays account for the majority of the weekend gross. Fridays aren’t usually that big for families.
Oops, not “going to be” but “going by” (see below)

WHY AMERICA, WHY?! Why isn’t “I Love You, Man” doing better than “Knowing?” That is horrible.
Sometimes normal people movie statistics make me sad. Doesn’t money mean anything? Shouldn’t you save it for the stuff that’s worth it? (Related sidenote: “I Love You, Man?” Totally worth it. Totes Mgotes, dude.)
My niece really, really wanted to go see Monters vs Aliens 3D, so my sister and I cave in. We showed up for the earliest matinee and were floored to find tickets $9.75. Never again will I ever spend that kind of $$$ for an 11AM film
Knowing must be pretty horrific and that’s not good. Last Friday it made 9 million and this Friday just 4.6 million. That’s at least a 50% loss in just one week. And the opening gross for Monsters is just scary good. Most family films blow up the box office on Saturdays and Sundays due to extra matinee showings. This one is going to be huge.
I saw Monsters vs. Aliens with my boyfriend; I thought it was a funny and highly amusing movie! Check it out
I just want to take another moment to point out how bad Watchmen tanked. A $150 million geek film released in March should rule the box office for at least a month. But Watchmen couldn’t even hold onto the top 10 after only 3 weeks.
I would like to lay blame for the Watchmen disaster on Malin Akerman. She ruined the movie with her stale, terrible acting. She seriously needs to go away. Perhaps a Razzie will do the trick?
I also hope Zack Synder loses some of the credibility he never actually earned.
“I Love You Man” was just the usual brain-dead man-boy schtick. Not worth the money. THAT’S why “Knowing” is doing better. It’s not genius but it’s also not “I Love You Man”. As for “Monsters V. Aliens”, that doesn’t even look good. I’m saving my money for “Up”. (But hopefully it’s not as preachy as “Wall*E”.
@Jared
You thought I Love You, Man was bad and you thought Wall-E was preachy? I seriously question your taste in movies. Maybe you also found 88 Minutes to be a thrilling good time?
Epic, epic fail. They’re getting soooo generic and formulatic now. Blah.
Pixar films are cinematic gold
Dreamworks movies are trash!!
bwahahaha!!
