'Gossip Girl' spin-off may incorporate 'O.C.' characters

The May 11 episode of Gossip Girl doubles as a pilot for a spin-off about young Lily van der Woodsen’s (Brittany Snow) raucous teen years in 1980s Los Angeles. But don’t go looking for her current flame, Rufus Humphrey, to pop up. “It’s not the story of how Lily met Rufus,” explains executive producer Josh Schwartz. In fact, he and co-creator Stephanie Savage are toying with the notion that Lily may have crossed paths with characters from their previous hit, which ended its run on Fox in 2007. The duo say they are discussing the idea of having teenage Lily interact with earlier versions of The O.C.’s Kirsten Nichol and Jimmy Cooper. Our dream casting? Megan Fox as Julie Cooper!

this has been my hope and dream ever since i found out about this 80’s LA spin-off. they have to do it at least once. but i want to see more 80’s Kirsten, Sandy, and Julie.

  • pilot

if megan fox was cast i might actually pvr the show

If Marissa was fifteen in 2003, and she was the reason Julie and Jimmy got married, then she was born in 1988, which means Julie was dating Jimmy in 1987, three years after Kirsten broke up with him over “college choices” (unplanned pregnancy) as per “Case of the Franks” (S4). If Lily knew the early 80s prince and princess of Orange County she might not have met the girl from Riverside. (Isn’t this comment a bit frightening?)

I like Brittany Snow, but I think I’m skipping this spin off altogether.

  • Brody

If they decide to cross-in the Coopers and Cohens, I might actually tune in.

  • Alia

Lily’s rich parents might have had occasion to hang out with Caleb Nichol, don’t you think?

  • Krystleblah

omfg, I’m pretty sure I dreamed of this scenario. The dvr is set.

  • jake

that would be beyond anything i could ever dream about and if thats the case im definitely watching that spinoff

  • claire

I think I just died and went to heaven.

  • Wow

My friends and I were JUST joking about this. Although, I think Sandy makes the most sense, since he is the one from the East Coast, no?

  • Wouldn’t it be Cool?

Imagine if they made Kirsten and Lily cousins??? OMG! I think my brain just exploded.

  • clevs

wow, they must do that, so many fans of oc will tune in to watch, me being one of them

  • Briana

Oh how I have missed “The O.C.” and all that wonderful teen angst!

  • Jordan

Oh jesus christ, I have to watch now.

  • Megan

If they do I’m not watching the spin off, I hate the OC. These are two different shows and should not be mixed, regardless of whether the creator/producer/whatever was a part of them both. Will Buffy be paying a visit to Dollhouse next (not that I watch that crappy ripoff show).

I just think this idea of a prequel series is going to be difficult to pull off. We know the fate of the main character and who she does and doesn’t wind up with. And I don’t see how they would incorporate current versions of early characters they introduce because doing so would negate any long term story (or suspense) for them on the prequel series (for example, say Lily falls in love with Billy – it’s a hit – and he leaves town; then we see the older version on GG; it makes it hard to do a return of the character without messing up story). I just think a prequel when the current version is running is going to be constricting to the stories.

Um, Hello! I wouldn’t say it can’t happen yet. Have you not seen Smallville? That show’s very successful and we already knew from episode one what was going to happen to Clark Kent…

  • sizzlemaker

Nix, you’re definitely right about the timing. Julie wouldn’t figure in to this at all, nor would Sandy.
But it could work that Lily knew Kirsten and Jimmy…

if they do this it won’t totally make sense cause of marissa’s little sister kaitlin (i think). Kaitlin is played by willa holland. She is two different characters on gossip girls and the o.c. and if they combine it i don’t think it’ll make sense because of her. but if willa holland never did guest star on gossip girls it would work out.

This would completely rock! But I think we should only see Kristin and Jimmy because Sandy and Julie appearing wouldn’t make much sense given their back stories.

  • Michelle

Now that show I would watch!

  • Oscar Scott

I’m not so sure about this one Josh. Is he gonna have Lilly and Julie meet on white snake reunion tour bus? This has the potential to be disaster.

  • MIALONG

I THIK THE SPINOOF SHOULD JUST STAY WITH LILY AND THE OTHER CHARCTHERS THE OC IS DEAD AND GONE SO THERE IS NO POINT IN TRYING TO REVIVE IT

  • yvette

    I would totally watch that
