On the March 19 episode of One Life to Live, the show’s resident heartthrob, Rex Balsom (John-Paul Lavoisier), takes an electric razor to his golden locks in a show of support for his ailing son, Shane (Austin Williams), who’s recently been diagnosed with leukemia. Lavoisier, 29, who’s been on the ABC show for seven years, was more than willing to take on the challenge — even though he’s never cut his own hair and this is the shortest it’s ever been.
“It was a great way to sort of complete Rex as a well-rounded character with heart and soul. It’s a huge adult thing for him to have to face,” says Lavoisier, but he admits the story line has been tough for him. “I like playing Rex comedically, so having to play him sad everyday while filming this has been hard.”
Though the story line plays into the summer, they’re already starting to film the resolution, which involves Shane heading home but not without a few wrenches thrown in.
Take a look at the exclusive footage of Rex and his mom, Roxanne (Ilene Kristen) below.

And, in true soap style, he just has to take his shirt off before cutting his hair! Doesn’t everyone do that?
Wow – I couldn’t even think about the hair after seeing that body … when did he get so cut??
Kudos to EW to covering the daytime arena! OLTL is one of the best there is, and soaps are some of the best dramas on TV right now (OLTL, Y&R).
hey – he should have stripped down to his underwear – to protect his pants from getting dirty of course.
Wasn’t this done with Smith showing support for Samantha on SATC?
OLTL is the best daytime soap…that was a great scene with Rex!!!
Kudos to JPL. He’s been pretty spectacular the past few days in this storyline. I’m digging it.
Oh how I love him. That he prefers playing comedy makes me nervous, though, since that is clearly the opposite of the direction his character is in. Hope he sticks around!
I’m glad that EW is covering soaps, especially OLTL, but I’m pretty sure his last name is “Balsom”, not “Balsam”.
@EW: I appreciate you covering OLTL, as it is the best soap on TV, and one of the few shows I never miss, along with Lost, DWTS, Life on Mars (R.I.P.) and Project Runway (if it ever returns).
@Andrea: No, actually it is BalsAm.
@Andrea: And I’ll eat my words — It is BALSOM. However, in my defense, ABC has it spelled incorrectly in one place on their own website (where I saw it before). The OLTL section, however, has it as BALSOM.
He’s so good looking– he’s my favorite character on OLTL. Thanks EW for including soaps!
This is one of my favorite shows.
