Jonas Brothers proved this weekend that they are no Miley Cyrus. The teen pop stars’ 3-D concert film, Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience, opened in twice as many theaters as last year’s Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus Best of Both Worlds but grossed a scant $12.7 million at the box office — less than half of Cyrus’ bow. Jonas still managed to pull in a solid average of $10,000 but grossed far less than what most prognosticators were predicting. It also wasn’t strong enough to best Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail, which won its second weekend in a row with $16.5 million. Madea’s total now stands at $64.9 million.
Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire showed that the Academy Awards can mean something at the box office, grossing $12.2 million in its widest weekend of release since bowing more than four months ago. The Danny Boyle-directed film’s total gross soared 45 percent for the weekend and now stands at an impressive $115.1 million. Liam Neeson’s Taken became the second unlikely film of the year, after Paul Blart: Mall Cop, to cross the $100 million, grossing an additional $10 million its fifth week of release. The film, whose gross stands now at $107 million, dropped an amazing 12 percent — not bad for an under-the-radar action thriller. And rounding out the top five is New Line’s He’s Just Not That Into You. The romantic-comedy ensemble grossed $5.9 million to put its total at $78.5 million. The other new wide release, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, grossed $4.6 million as expected, for an eighth spot in the line-up. Box office as a whole was up 11 percent for the frame, which is quite impressive considering it was a pretty quiet weekend as everyone awaits the debut of next weekend’s Watchmen.

This can’t be possible. Who is paying to see this movie? Ridiculous.
this makes me embarrassed to be an American movie buff
Ha! Jonas Brothers lost to Tyler Perry! I am already predicting that Watchmen will at least bring in $65 million on its opening weekend.
Anyone else not surprised?
To her credit, Miley has more personality than the 3 Jonases put together
This makes me EXTREMELY happy
YAY!!!! THE JONAS BROTHERS FLOPPED AT THE BOX OFFICE!
Street Fighter tanked!
I was really hoping for a sequel.
Does this mean that there’s going to be another Madea movie?? Please tell me the answer is NO.
This doesn’t really surprise me- I went to see Madea Goes to Jail in a pretty crowded theater yesterday afternoon. It was just the kind of film I needed- silly and funny, and I didn’t have to think very hard to enjoy it. I hope there will be more Tyler Perry movies- I’ve liked all of them.
yep there’s gonna be another madea movie. i have no problem with it. if they can make dumb, idiotic, stupid movies like epic movie, meet the spartans and various other mindless CRAP, then what’s wrong with ethnic comedy with a little drama.
What is the matter with people? How can they spend money on this horrible, horrible movie. It’s so depressing that this makes money instead of things like Revolutionary Road, The Reader, and Gran Tarino. The masses are asses.
I am so happy that the Jonas’ have failed because they cannot sing and there acting is even worse. Madea was a great movie; it was funny and entetaining and I am glad that a man dressed as a woman beat the Jonas’ Bros at the box office. And yeah Watchmen is coming out Friday; cant wait to see that movie.
I’ve always enjoyed Tyler Perry’s films. I’m shocked by how much this one has banked; especially with lack of TV advertising. How bout’ that Friday the 13th going from No.1 to out of the top-10 just two weeks later.
jonas brothers box office tally is even less impressive when you consider it costs several dollars more to see it than your average movie, and even more than that (17.50 at my theatre) in IMAX
We just came from seeing the Jonas Brothers movie. It wasn’t wonderful, but about what I expected. However, at $15 a pop, that’s a whole lot of money. I was surprised the theatre had very few people, and I’m sure the price had a lot to do with it. Greed is not good in this case.
Shocking! This is turning out to be the biggest Madea hit yet for Tyler Perry. I never thought that movie would hold off the Jonas Bros. Face it. America loves comedy right now and another comedy hit is bulldozing its way to 100 million dollars at the box office.
Madea is a bad girl!
To KerlyQ:
Madea has more personality in one finger than the JoBros put together!
Now that their movie flopped, hopefully the media will stop talking about the Jonas Brothers every minute of every hour of every day! …Now if we can only get people to shut up about Twilight!
As thrilled as I am that the Jonas Brothers’ movie bombed, I am quite disturbed at the popularity of that disgusting piece of trash Tyler Perry’s movies. Patently offensive in its racial stereotypes, his movies’ continued success is bafflign to me, but what do you expect from one of those idiotic people who think an imaginary “God” made them straight when they’re clearly a flaming homosexual. His delusions is offensive to anyone with enough brain power to realize homosexuality is physical attribute and not a “lifestyle” you can turn on and off like a light switch. This man needs to be barred from every showing his self-loathing, racist face in public again.
MARK GET A LIFE YOU A–HOLE.
I’m proud of of Tyler, but some of his movies suck. I’m so tired of seeing this steretypical image of the large Black woman being loud and aggressive. The black community is so homophobic, but we flock to see a GAY man in drag. Tyler continues to talk about how his dad whipped him. Why did he whip him? Because his family and community knows that he is GAY, not that this is a crime. The crime is that Tyler speaks negatively about the Gay community.
I’m not sure why the presales aren’t being included with the box office numbers for the JB 3d concert experience. They made 22 million in presales alone, plus the 12 million they made this weekend, which comes to 34 million. They actually beat Madea, and Miley’s numbers.
Because pre-sales aren’t necessarily for this weekend. Why should they get counted towards totals for THIS weekend when not all the tickets are being sued for THIS weekend. That makes the kind of sense that doesn’t.

Well, clearly the movie isn’t that horrible or no one would be attending the screenings. Look, just because you don’t understand or like something doesn’t mean other people feel the same way as you. Revolutionary Road was an excellent movie, but comparing it to a Madea movie is just ridiculous. There is a completely different dynamic with the tone and pace of both movies. Also, spare me the drivel about “The Reader” or “Gran Torino”. Torino has done VERY well at the box office. The Reader, a movie about a woman molesting a young boy/man, is not something I would want to see.
Tyler Perry has targeted audiences that respond to his values and characters, and the viewers are responding. GET OVER IT. Maybe you’re the “ass” for assuming everything?
What is the matter with America that people have to be so negative and dissagreable. If you dont like the movie its fine, if you like it, its okay too. You dont have to think people are asses for having taste different from yours. Its a free society and that freedom means that we make unique choices and not have a homogenous life. Lets accept the right of other people to make these choices.
Film snobbery is so funny. Put down the kool-aid Jeff W. I did see The Reader, and wasn’t overly impressed. Taken was a much more enjoyable film experience. I thought Gran Torino was a great film, and it’s box office shows others agreed.
Yes!!! This is great news for me and sad to say bad news for my overly obsessed friend. Now I can only pray that she didn’t visit a imax movie theather that the actual Jonas Brothers had visited because if that ever did happen. I would never hear the end of it!!!
Madea is a stupid character and the humor is lame. I have no problem with escapist entertainment and films that are lighthearted/silly. But this sort of humor is crude. Not only does it cater to the lowest common denominator of human intelligence but it also reinforces stereotypes.
you don’t have to be a movie buff to see madea’s movies are very funny and entertaining and tyler perry is a genius and the street fighter movie was bound to suck.
