At least one early review of Hugh Jackman’s Oscar-hosting performance is in, and it’s a rave. EW caught up with Baz Luhrmann (Jackman’s Australia director and friend) at the Academy Awards on Sunday. The filmmaker said he was thrilled with how Jackman’s emceeing turned out: While the show was mostly the vision of coproducer Bill Condon, Luhrmann said he helped Jackman with some of the choreography in the host’s
dance number with Beyonce. “At this time, his style,
elegance, and grace is really resonating,” Luhrmann said. “I spent six months with him touring around the
world and two years making a movie with him in the desert. I know him almost as
well as his family does. What you see is what you get.” –Nicole Sperling

I really like Hugh Jackman, but this was the most boring Oscar show ever.
I thought Hugh Jackman was terrific. I actually thought the whole show was entertaining and worthwhile. The previous sentence is something I never thought I would write.
I thought Hugh did an amazing job. He handled a difficult job with energy, grace, humor, and charm.
The show as a whole had some hits and some misses (what was with the editing/constant background music?), but Hugh truly shined.
I thought that Hugh did a great job, and no surprise that he is that talented… (Tony award?) He exuded charm, confidence, and class.. I though that the musical numbers were well done and executed and the big surprise was how well Anne Hathaway can sing!
Did’t think he was terrible, but I was pretty non-plussed really.
I thought tonight Academy Awards were great? It had a very relaxed feel about it, not the usual still collar vibe. Even the not so perfect musical numbers were entertaining. Having 5 previous winners present the nominees and awards was a nice touch too. Over all…great job!
Hugh was great (loved the Wolverine shout out in one of the musical numbers). Tina Fey and Steve Martin were hilarious, as was Jen & Jack,& The Apatow twins (Franco and Rogen)on comedy. Stiller and Portman, I love, but Stiller as Phoenix detracted from the nominees for Cinematography.
I also liked the parts where former acting winners spoke to the new nominees — It seemed meaningful and sincere.
Oh, was it just me, or was that slightly awkward for Jennifer Aniston, standing up there in front of Brad and Angie. But hey, atleast she made it on the stage! Love me some Jen.
Cute, sexy, funny, AND he can dance and sing. I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing Hugh host again!
Hugh Jackman was a nice change of pace from the long line of comedians that have hosted in recent years and I think he did an excellent job hosting. Based on what I saw as a viewer and the response from the audience, Hugh Jackman should host again next year (at least) before they move on to someone else.
Is it just me or did the oldest actor who plays Salim from Slumdog Millionaire look exactly like an Indian version of John Mayer?
Fan-FREAKIN’-Tastic! It has been an agregiously long time since I can remember an Oscar night this entertaining.Call me old fashioned but I have missed the big production numbers. The opening was comprable to the Crystal years.Hugh did show biz proud and deserves his triple threat title. If they ever make Boy From OZ a movie he will so walk away with a statue.I adored how the performers were welcomed to the “club”;it made the night more personal and intimate. The show for me was not boring, I did not even look at my watch until 2 hours in because I was having such a good time I did not want it to end, no surprise it went over though. Rambling I know but it’s the Oscars and they didn’t suck!Who knew it was possible? PS: Had Wall-E or Dark Night been nominated Slumdog would not have had a chance. Just Sayin! Hooray for Hollywood!!!!!!!
Wow. I thought that musical farsical was AWFUL.
I’m sorry Baz, I heart ya, but I really disliked that musical. Though I love Hugh and I think he did a wonderful job hosting, that number, with the over-rated Beyonce and the cast of High School Musical, was NOT enjoyable at all.
I don’t know who Bill Condon is but PLEASE let him produce the Oscars from now on! This is the first show in ages that was actual entertainment….smart, funny and informative to boot!
Ben Stiller was tremendous in his parody and Hugh Jackman was a masterful performer in every way as host. I think most of Hollywood folk are full of themselves, but this show was quite good. Of course, everyone could have done without Sean Penn’s self righteous comments, but, it’s not like they weren’t expected.
Terribly boring, bloated and predictable. Just like every year. It looked like Penelope Cruz and Kate Winslett were being initiated into a coven of witches. It was also terribly creepy to see the black best supporting actor winner talking about the performance of a white performer in black face. *shudders*. One of the worst Oscars in years. Bland movies, nothing surprising and a clunky format. I’m sure the dead montage looked great in the theater but was so poorly shot and Queen Latifah singing off key and a song with too few verses were just painful to watch.
Why WAS BILL MAHER AND TINA FEY ON STAGE? “30 ROCK” RANKED 119th IN RATINGS LAST YEAR, TIED WITH “AMERICAS MOST WANTED”. NO ONE WATCHES HER SHOW BUT HOLLYwood KEEPS PUTTING HER UP ON STAGE BECAUSE SHE BASHES REPUBLICANS. WHAT A JOKE!!
When HOLLYwood realizes that LIBERALISM doesnt sell they will be profitable. ENOUGH WITH THE GAY, ANTI- AMERICAN, ANTI-CAPITALISM, LIBERAL MOVIES. THEY DONT SELL AND THEY ARENT ENTERTAINING. “30 Rock” was ranked 94 in 102 in 2006-7, 94 in 2007-8 and is #64 in 2008-9.
Loved Hugh Jackman. Bring him back next year.
Hugh is a class act and very entertaining,,,What good fun!! He made the time very enjoyable,,Bring him back,,!!
Jackman was o.k., but he didn’t have the same spark that someone like Timberlake has. The show was very boring and the musical number with Beyonce was not that great.
xinunus: It’s called a remote. If you don’t like what you see, turn it off…obviously you couldn’t. Was Fox News off the air in your area.
If you want an awards show that satisfies your taste, I suggest you start one yourself. You can call it the Cranky Republican Awards. See ya in four.
