It's depressing how much angst is generated in what is meant to be such a great night.

Chip,
There is always (or should always) be a place for legitimate debate in the marketplace of ideas. The same goes for values, which is why many people take hardline, oversimplified stances on such "values" as abortion and gay marriage. I have never objected to dialogue - indeed, I've welcomed it - albeit occasionally feeling the need to clarify the real points at issue. As an aside, your understanding of my position is correct.

Did anyone else notice how far back Heath Ledger's family was seated? It felt like it took them much longer to get to the stage than anyone else. Couldn't the show have seated them in the same place they would have seated Heath (row 1 or 2)? I thought it was super crappy of them.

so many comments about penn is because he detracted from the oscars. He is a two-faced whiner whose actual achievements have been only self-promoting. He doesn't care about gays or anybody else. He just craves attention. If he would have shut up, people here would have been talking about other things.

So many comments about Penn... his performance in Milk was pretty god, but the movie itself is kind of weak. I am extremely disappointed that Slumdog won so many Oscars. The movie is average at best and certainly not an Oscars material. You can't even compare it to Benjamin Button or the Wrestler, it's night and day. Micky Rourke and Bred Pitt won nothing - that's pathetic and the so called "academy" should be ashamed for showring the semi--foreign TV-type cheesy melodrama flick with so many awards. It deserves none of them. Just another proof Oscars is quite a moronic farce - not a presentation of awards for achievements in cinematography.

after reading so many negative comments...about Mr. Penn since I can remember Hollywood at the Oscars have always used the stage to further rights and such in this country. Gay rights are coming they are deserved . The morons that compare Gay and Lesbians to perverts, child molesters, and things like that are ignorant. Remember was not that long ago in TX signs said NO N... no mexicans and no dogs in restaurants...People are people ...it's pretty simple and in this day and age do you not think we have more things to worry about than other peoples personal lives. Basic rights should be for everyone.....

I felt delighted that that Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy won the Oscars. They're so amazingly creative. The screenplay especially wasn't just an adaptation, it was an original work of art. I've read the book on which it was based, and the book though very readable was simply unfilmable in its original form with a multiplicity of stories and characters. Beaufoy is a magician with ideas and concepts and it was an absolute delight watching the movie. Less delightful has been these guys who piled onto the Oscars stage at the end. Everyone knows that only the producers go up on the stage for the Best Picture award. In doing what they did, the otherwise wonderful cast reduced the Oscars to an Indian tamasha. The next time the Academy is likely to be less kind to a movie from India or an Indian theme. They would be scared of the mob of cast and crew and even the author of the book not going by the script. Shame on you guys who shouldn't have been there, you could've cheered from the audience.

If we're talking about marriage "rights" then don't be a discriminatory hater of these groups.
Oh, let me guess, those are "wrong" but homos*xuals are "right".

I was so dissapointed that Mickey Rourke didn't win the Oscar. His performance was so sincere and heartwrenching, the kind of performance that sticks with you long after you leave the theater. I think Sean Penn is a brilliant actor, bit 2008 should have gone to Mickey Rourke--he's a winner in my book for sure.
