'Twilight' exclusive: Chris Weitz will not direct third film, 'Eclipse'

Categories: Film, Twilight

Chris Weitz will not direct the third film in the Twilight series, Eclipse, a source close to the production tells EW.com exclusively. Because New Moon, which Weitz is helming, and Eclipse are due to be released so close together (on Nov. 20, 2009, and June 30, 2010, respectively), Weitz will be in post-production on New Moon at the same time that Eclipse will be shooting. That said, the source confirms a report that the movies will not be shot simultaneously or back-to-back; there will be a brief gap between the production of both films. (Reporting by Adam B. Vary)

    Um, why not?

  • Victoria

Um, read above it clearly states why not.

  • xxxxxx

this is a disapointment not good news

  • Kelly

Chris can’t do pre-production of New Moon and direct Eclipse and still meet the premiere date for New Moon all at once. that is why

  • Justina

    Fair enough.
It’ll be cool to get yet another director’s view on the love between Edward and Bella, if there is a new director for Eclipse.

  • joanna

this makes me mad how they keep changing directors!!! the movies will not be the same quality since they will have different directors!! ugh

  • Esme

that kool that is kinda kool hopefully they keep the same people if he/she don’t I will bit his/her neck I’ll so mad it won’t even be funny but that would be awesome if all the movies were directed by a different director I think so at least but wouldn’t that be awesome Cathrine Haderwick came back but I hiley dout that

Did anyone even think about the actors during this WHOLE arrangement? Of course not, how could they? They would have to be filming during the promotion of New Moon. By the time, Eclipse is over, everyone will be ready to pass out! Jeez! GIVE THEM A BREAK IN THERE!

  • Noah

Yeah, Jules. Those POOR actors, having to work on two films back to back… I’d HATE to have to work to get paid the kind of money they’re making -_-

  • blackbutton

I don’t think the fact that they keep changing the director is neccessarily a bad thing. Harry Potter’s had five different directors and it still turned out fine.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

I feel bad for the actors, they don’t catch a break do they??? All because the production company wants to make as much money as soon as possible. I only hope they don’t sacrifice quality by doing this

  • Holly

i am so flippin ecxited.. this is the best news

  • lala

this is bad. they are only after money, and don’t care about the quality of the film. I hope the realize that if new moon sucks like twlight did, then the fans wont line up to go see the last 2. they need to give a bigger budget as well.

  • Traci

Not that I care about Twilight, but the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed simultaneously. If Peter Jackson can film three incredibly long films, with several different units shooting in different places at the same time, how is this director unable to film two, which I highly doubt would require as much work as the Rings movies did.

  • taylor

I am so siked for the third movie.
    its my favorite book.
im sad that they keep switching directors though and i hope they will make new moon and eclipce close to the book.

  • ash

I think that people will go see the movies no matter what, alot of people LOVED twilight and thought it was done pretty well, and im sure new moon will turn out just fine.
besides having a different director isnt such a bad thing, harry potter has had many directors and look how great those movies are!
i am super excited for the movies, the books are amazing reads and its amazing to see them played out in movies.

  • taryn

so as long the films are great. I think new moon will turn out just fine. As well as eclipse.
As long as they make breaking dawn then I’m good(: ü

  • R

Stephen King says Stephanie Meyer doesn’t know how to write.

  • Allison

I can’t believe how quickly the movies will be released. That’s got me a little scared with how they will turn out. And man, give the actors a break. They’re gonna be so tired by the end of this trilogy.

  • smryan23

I’m getting sick and tired of the Twilight hype. Its a mediocore and unoriginal series that is overglorified because it is about sex. We should all listen to Stephen King (it is crap) and stop trying to make it bigger then it actually is

  • Allison

I really really really hope that they don’t screw these up…oh wait, they’re releasing the 3rd one 6 months after the second (for probably no budget too!)…I’m off to go re-read my books…

  • SMGamm08

For all of you haters commenting on how much Twilight & the rest of the series sucks, why are you even reading these articles if you hate it so much? And shame on Stephen King for hating on a fellow author. You should be supporting others in your craft. Just because YOU dont like it, doesn’t automatically make it crap. We are all entitled to our own opinion & just because you disagree with what others love, doesnt make them wrong and you right. We do live in America, here! Yes, I am a Twilight/Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings fan, you can like them all.

  • Tina

Hahah.. yeah.. ok.. since stephen king says it’s a bad series lets all listen to him… c’mon people… use your own head and don’t just listen to him.. if you’re so anti-twilight, read the freaking book and make up your decision that way rather than basing it on the movie…

  • King Ben

Of course they’re going to film the series as soon as possible – the lead character is a vampire who never ages. They can’t have him look older a’la Radcliffe in the Potter films. Duh.

  • twylytesaga

i wish peter jackson directed these movies he would have been great!!

  • Livia

clearly smryan23 has never read the twilight books. Cause otherwise, he/she wouldn’t have made that comment.

  • KaylaCullen

smryan, I cannot believe you. You obviously haven’t read the series. Twilight isn’t even about sex! Yes, Breaking Dawn is patially about sex, but they are written about simply more than sex. They are about serious romance, with supernatural themes.
Anyway, I understand why Chris won’t be directing. That is a lot of very hard work and time scheduling if he were to direct Eclipse.

  • cuppycake

I think Stephenie does know how to write. Her book series kept me so entertain i never left my room only to go to the bathroom. My mum had to bring me food. I just couldn’t put the books down. Sure the movie wasn’t like the book but you have to remeber. If you go to youtube there is a video where the interveiws Kristen Stewert and she was talking about how they had to do most of their stunts (if not all) because they were low on money. They had no green screens it was all done by theirselves. And that’s what made the movie great. I understand how they’re going to get a different director for these two movies. And i agree that everyone is going overboard with Twilight but hey, it’s the new thing. I’m all into it.

  • Ash

Its gud she wont direct the ECLIPES cause she made the whole awesome film a disaster it was liked by ppl cause the cast was gud

  • Wing

    Totally agree with twylytesaga.
I am pretty sure that the movie will be really really great if the director is Peter Jackson!
