George Clooney will appear on 'ER'...but when?

Categories: TV Biz

It’s probably a good idea to program your TiVo now for the final episodes of ER; if history is any guide, NBC won’t let us know when — or even confirm if — George Clooney will make a much-anticipated return to the drama. It wouldn’t be the first time Clooney has made a surprise appearance on the show — Spoiler Alert, if by some chance you’ve never seen it! — as he turned up in May 2000 for Julianna Margulies’ farewell as Carol Hathaway. That episode, titled “Such Sweet Sorrow,” ended with Carol happily reuniting with Clooney’s Doug in Seattle.

The previous Clooney cameo came as a huge surprise to fans since NBC didn’t promote it. Then again, that two-minute scene was fully meant to stay under wraps; a source close to the show said executive producer John Wells took only a skeleton crew to the Seattle area and offered bonuses to his workers if they kept quiet about the very special episode. Clooney’s appearance was not even credited.

One burning question regarding Clooney’s expected upcoming cameo is how much he’ll get paid (assuming he even accepts compensation). Another source close to the show speculated that whatever Clooney earns — be it the SAG minimum or a $100K-plus payday for a few hours work — it seems plausible that Clooney could donate it to charity.

Take a glimpse of the memorable reunion back in 2000 (sadly, there is no audio available on any of the reunion clips we found on YouTube).

I for one can’t wait for the return of Clooney to ER. I don’t care either way if it’s announced or kept under wraps. ER gave him his career and the show was never the same without him. Others are coming back, which is awesome! So far the farewell season has done good…so welcome back Doug Ross!

Also…when he returned for the leaving of Carol Hathaway I was totally suprised! By far the best suprise on television ever!

“NBC won’t let us know when — or even confirm if — George Clooney will make a much-anticipated return to the drama”
You’re kidding, right? They’ve spoiled EVERY return thus far and i’m sure Clooney’s will be no exception. The ONLY reason his last appearance was a secret was because the producers kept NBC in the dark (and BOY were they PEEVED!) Let’s hope history repeats itself. Then again, with the state of NBC, i’m not going to start holding my breath.

Yay! Cannot wait for George and Julianna to return. I have never missed an ER episode and truly sad it will soon be over. Glad the former stars are showing their respect by returning.

I hope they DON’T promote it — for one, just the anticipation will be wonderful – wondering when will he show, how, why?? and if they do promote it – it will be on every other commercial – we will be drowning in “George Clooney returns for a very special episode of ER”, etc etc

I CANNOT WAIT!!!! I’ve already set my DVR to tape all the new episodes!!!

  • Samantha

I would like to see George clooney Returning in the series Finale on March 12th 2009.

  • CV

I don’t recall any audio outside of Don Henley’s “Taking You Home,” which is probably why there’s no audio on the clips – the copyright police.

  • Dave

Someone should tell Samantha that March 12th is NOT the finale of ER … the series will wrap in April after the additional three episodes agreed upon by NBC & John Wells have aired …

  • Shari

there WAS audio, CV. Doug asked, “Where are the girls?” And she said “At my mother’s.” That’s about it. LOL.

  • DW

I think they’ll promote it. People still cared about ER back in 2000, so of course they could get away with a surprise back then. Now they need all the ratings help they can get.

  • Roy

I thought ER went off the air five years ago.

I saw a pic of Clooney in doctor’s scrub on People.com a few weeks ago. I would assume (as did the pic caption) that he has filmed a cameo. I plan to watch it, though I’ve never watched ER and have always wanted to.

This one has audio, of both the Don Henley song and the dialogue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JYmG1NTpo4

What is the deal with all the website advertising on ALL the comment sections on ew.com? This is a place for fan comments, not free promotion for singles sites, search engines, contests, etc!!
Anyway, hope NBC does not reveal when George will appear.

I distinctly remember the promo immediately before the Carol farewell aired mentioning the “return of an old friend”- tipping me off that George would be there. I also remember being really disappointed that it had been spoiled.
I don’t doubt for a second that NBC will tip people off as to when the episode will air. The ratings are way more important that spoiling it.

nbc should promo and milk the heck out of it.
