The final tallies from the first 31 days of 2009 are in, and the news is good: Last month was the biggest January in box office history, according to Media by Numbers. Buoyed by hits like Gran Torino and Paul Blart: Mall Cop, the cumulative box office gross for the month was over a billion dollars for the first time ever (about $1.03 billion, to be close-to-exact). That total represents an 18.6 percent gain over a year ago (when the January sum was about $867 million), but it doesn’t account for rises in ticket prices or inflation.
