Jaden Smith has found himself a mentor. Jackie Chan will take on Pat Morita's Mr. Miyagi role in Sony Pictures' remake of The Karate Kid. The movie stars 10-year old Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness), who is the son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, and will be directed by Harold Zwart (The Pink Panther 2). Will's production company, Overbrook, will produce, and Jada has been rumored for the role of Jaden's mother in the film. China Film Corp. Group will coproduce the movie, which will shoot entirely in China.

and for those who say jaden is riding on his old man back get you a back to ride on, cause contrary to popular belief you would ride a back if it was your father. he's great leave him alone

marq Wed, Jun 24, 2009 at 11:40 AM EST

please everyonew here has lost it just because they are remaking the karate kid doesn't mean that it will take something away from it if you don't like the new stay your butt at home and keep watching the original one if it wasn't for pat
1. the whole movie would of been corny
2. ralph still couldn't fight through all of the series
3. ms. swank was awesome much better, and more heart than ralph.
4. and jaden is a totally better actor than ralph
5. please don't tell me you guys think pat is better than jackie

Ok if anyone knows some Karate history, then you would know that the roots of Karate that formed in Okinawa were originally from a form of Shaolin Kung Fu called White Crane Kung Fu.

I'm not sure how these movies will turn out, but it's going to be hard to remake a classic like the Karate Kid.

Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio were excellent actors, Jacki chan and the rest of the actors have thier work cut out for them.

David Fri, Mar 27, 2009 at 04:06 AM EST

It's going to be called "The Kung Fu Kid". I don't think Jackie is going to be playing a Japanese, but a Chinese.

Cris_Daryl Sat, Feb 7, 2009 at 03:28 AM EST

I disagree with almost everyone on this page. I'm actually looking forward to seeing this movie. Yeah china isn't known for karate, but they do still study it because they want to know multiple forms of martial arts. I think its actually an honor for jackie chan to be on this film. He seems like the perfect fit. I also think that this movie is going to have a surprising plot and will try not to copy the original movies.. Well maybe the crane kick.

Jim Thu, Feb 5, 2009 at 05:31 PM EST

Jill,

It was Hillary Swank. Look it up on IMDB.

What a nightmare

Yeah, it was Listen 2 This. I liked those, but then they started not being exclusively about music, (they started to include video games & comic books too) http://cleaning.emenace.com/upholste2b/18.html cleaning hardwood floor undefined

hey, not much enthusism from everyone... i love the original movies, and give them all the credit they deserve... but i rekon that this new idea is pretty cool. jackie chan would b great, and id love to see what kinda script they come up with

Real Karate Dude Sun, Jan 18, 2009 at 06:04 AM EST

Ok, so they get a black kid, who has as much talent as a drunk snail. It is set in China (no karate there folks, better brush up on your martial arts lore) & you want Jackie Chan as Miyagi? Ok, I adore Jackie. He is just effing great. However, he knows as much about Karate as I know about sewing. And the kid, ten years old, that is way too young. The original was a master piece. The right age, the right script. A sequel would be better, with a young teen ager, maybe around 15 to 17 years old, would be the best. And there are tons of professional Karate Senseis out there. No offense to Jackie, but when Forbidden Kingdom came out, him and Jet Li were teaching the american kid Kung Fu and not Karate.
Hollywood has always sucked, but with this, they are now scraping the toilet to find the last remains of poop they can find to make a movie out of.
Then they expect us to pay to watch this shite. Good luck.

Jill Nunya Sat, Jan 17, 2009 at 02:56 AM EST

Rob...it was Robin Lively, not Hilary Swank.

Will Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 11:31 AM EST

1) The movie is 25 years old this year. That's old enough for a remake.
2) Smith's kid is too young. Get a Japanese American kid this time. He can "discover his roots."
3) I love the idea of Ralph Machio returning to "pass it on."
4) I think this is going to suck. I don't want to ruin my memories of KK, so I won't see it unless it gets good reviews.
5) Who's going to do the Banarama songs?

Veecee Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:38 PM EST

This is terrible. They should leave karate kid alone theyre gonna ruin it. Plus I think Jaden is a horrible "actor", just riding on daddy's company.

Tomoyo Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:35 PM EST

I wasn't aware the original was even old enough to remake. How long is it going to take before a film released one year--let alone an effing classic--is remade within the next three? Is that what we have to look forward to in the 2020s, or will it be sooner? Are we going to see a "Pineapple Express" or "Wall-E" remake in 2013?

pjrake Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:21 PM EST

"To those saying Jackie Chan is too young for this part, believe it or not, he's older than Pat Morita was when he originally played Mr. Miaygi."

and harrison ford was older in "skulls" than connery when he played his dad in "last crusade"!

bradical Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:21 PM EST

Dear God ... Hollywood can't make anything except for horrible Armageddonesque formula movies so they ruin ours. Lucas already ruined Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and now they are taking away Karate Kid? I think this is hilarious, Jackie Chan is Chinese so that is Kung Fu, Jaden Smith is black, and this is set in China, ridiculous. I hope this one waxes off before it gets made.

Pat Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 12:22 PM EST

This is worse than just an astoundingly bad idea. It's insultingly inaccurate. I hope they change the title to "The Kung Fu Kid," because karate is NOT a Chinese martial art. Just idiotic. How much are they paying Jackie Chan to get him to humiliate himself this way, like Sean Connery did for "Highlander 2"?

allen Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 09:39 AM EST

Karate Kid is a classic. They can never take that away. It is actually a nearly perfect screenplay and film. I'm sure this film will not be very good. Something for little kiddies, where as the original had an appeal to all audiences.

Jamie Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 08:38 AM EST

The ONLY way I would want this movie to be made is if Ralph Machio where playing Daniel passing it on to a new generation. Remake no...next generation sequel maybe.

Shamrock Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 12:49 AM EST

In the word of Amy Poehler and Seth Myers: "Really Hollywood?" "Really?"

Alichat Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 12:42 AM EST

OH DEAR GOD....what an astoundingly bad idea. Can Hollywood not come up with original ideas anymore???

dom Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 12:33 AM EST

To those saying Jackie Chan is too young for this part, believe it or not, he's older than Pat Morita was when he originally played Mr. Miaygi.

t3hdow Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 12:30 AM EST

To Ged:
I agree with you on the flawed nepotism argument with the crop of successful actors/actresses that came from Hollywood parents. Oh, and add Keifer Sutherland (son of Donald Sutherland) to that list.
Still, the Karate Kid remake is too tough to sell on anyone that has fond memories of Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi (read: just about everyone that's at least in their twenties...or even younger). With the wealth of original ideas lying dormant in Hollywood's writers, how about focusing on their material instead of rehashing this?

Rob Grizzly Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 12:14 AM EST

1. Jaden's too young.
2. Jackie's not old enough.
3. Jackie is known for Kung Fu, not Karate (there is a difference)
4. We know how it ends.
5. THEY BETTER NOT STEAL THE CRANE KICK
6. They did this already. With Hillary Swank.
7. I agree with all the comments below.
8. The movie isn't old enough to be remade. It's still fresh in our memories, and a classic that EVERYONE has seen, and should remain untouched. How did anyone with a conscience allow this to move forward?
9. I hate Hollywood.
10. And now I hate Will Smith.

Fitz Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 12:13 AM EST

More in the continuing desecration of my childhood.

Kayde_Lyn Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 11:27 PM EST

why why why why why!? Haven't we had enough of mindless, unnecessary remakes yet!? There are thousands of writers in and around LA right now that have millions of unproduced ideas and Hollywood is spending money to make movies that are seriously a waste of film.

Ged Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 11:22 PM EST

Just because Jaden wasn't given an impressive role in The day the earth stood still does not mean that his career is over, like what many of you bloggers post here.

Try watching him in the Pursuit of Happyness.

And all this bull about nepotism, what can you say about Angelina Jolie, the daughter of Jon Voigt, or Michael Douglas, the son of Kirk Douglas? The nepotism argument is stupid at best.

And the movie has not even been released, we do not know the plot, and there are many here who are trashing it without even knowing anything about it other than who acts in the movie. Reminds me of the tons of naysayers when Daniel Craig was chosen to be the next Bond.

richard Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 11:00 PM EST

no not that no talent hack from when the earth stood still. That kid sucked pond water. Wait no let him make it so I can laugh my ass off when he falls on his face after he does crane. Crap on crap off!!!!

Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 10:27 PM EST

Dang, this will take Jackie's time away from the Tuxedo 2.

Jay Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 10:09 PM EST

I could complain this is a bad idea, but Hollywood has remade everything, from "Psycho," to "Can't Buy Me Love," so why should this be any different. How's this for a concept? Why not remake Academy Award winners from the past twenty or thirty years? How about Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in the roles originated by Robert Redford and Meryl Streep for an "Out of Africa" remake! I'm kidding of course. But you see where I'm going with this? What's next? A remake of each movie from the "Back to the Future" trilogy with Zac Efron as Marty McFly and Vanessa Hudgens as Jennifer? How about casting Adam Sandler as Doc Brown? All he would need is a white wig and some aging makeup. Once again. Kidding! But you never know. Some studio exec could read this and take it seriously.

mk Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 09:57 PM EST

oops, i guess you didn't my previous comment. Sorry

mk Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 09:56 PM EST

No, no, no!! What a stupid idea. And EW, how dare you delete my previous big steamy t**d of a movie comment.

Al Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 09:54 PM EST

I hope this is just a rumor, and not something set in stone, because if it's a rumor, then perhaps all the vitriol spat and flung at the notion of this repulsive idea will be enough to send it to the grave from whence it came, horrid scum.

Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 09:50 PM EST

Wow, why is Will Smith forcing us to accept his talentless sun. Give me a break. Yea yeah, I know he hasn't had a chance, but that's such nepotism for this little nobody to get the role automatically, when there are a thousand other kids that could do a much better job at it. I mean the kid isn't the on that's going to be selling the movie, you know, but they need to know how to act. And the kid needs to be fukking older. Goddddamnit Will Smith. Don't take out your revenge on Hollywood because you can't kiss white women on screen, by forcing us to accomodate your son as an acting talent.

mk Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 09:48 PM EST

No, no, no!! This will be a a big steamy turd pile.

thad Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 09:37 PM EST

Don't call it Karate Kid!!!!! Crap, i'm so sick of it.

Jerry Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 09:23 PM EST

My head just exploded

ThomWhy8 Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 09:22 PM EST

Why does Hollywood have to make a remake of every good movie, why can't they ever come up with an original idea?

Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 09:19 PM EST

Please, please do not do this. This has bad news written all over it. Jaden cannot carry a movie and when was the last time Jackie really did anything with out "Rush Hour" in the title.

Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 08:46 PM EST

this is a stupid idea.

Bosephus Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 08:38 PM EST

This is horrible. It shouldn't be remade in the first place, and we have Will Smith forcing his untalented son on us again? Double crap sandwhich.

scott Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 08:37 PM EST

Will and Jada can spend their money however they want, just don't expect us to pay $9 to watch this crap.

mikey Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 08:32 PM EST

My theory about it being shot entirely in China is that no domestic crew would consent to being associated with defiling the classic original.

rich Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 08:15 PM EST

This reads like a joke. Really? Seriously? For real they are doing this?! Ick.
