John August will write the film version of the subversive comic book series Preacher for director Sam Mendes. Preacher is based on the works by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon,
which center on a foulmouthed cleric who is imbued with the word of God
and battles an all-powerful religious society. Neil Moritz’s Original
Films is producing the movie for Sony Pictures.
August is best known for his work with Tim Burton, writing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, and Big Fish for the prolific director. He recently wrote Dark Shadows for Burton to direct.
