Jackie Chan to star in 'The Karate Kid' remake

Categories: Movie Biz

Jaden Smith has found himself a mentor. Jackie Chan will take on Pat Morita’s Mr. Miyagi role in Sony Pictures’ remake of The Karate Kid. The movie stars 10-year old Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness), who is the son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, and will be directed by Harold Zwart (The Pink Panther 2). Will’s production company, Overbrook, will produce, and Jada has been rumored for the role of Jaden’s mother in the film. China Film Corp. Group will coproduce the movie, which will shoot entirely in China.

This reads like a joke. Really? Seriously? For real they are doing this?! Ick.

  • mikey

My theory about it being shot entirely in China is that no domestic crew would consent to being associated with defiling the classic original.

  • scott

Will and Jada can spend their money however they want, just don’t expect us to pay $9 to watch this crap.

  • Bosephus

This is horrible. It shouldn’t be remade in the first place, and we have Will Smith forcing his untalented son on us again? Double crap sandwhich.

  • Anonymous

    this is a stupid idea.

  • Anonymous

Please, please do not do this. This has bad news written all over it. Jaden cannot carry a movie and when was the last time Jackie really did anything with out “Rush Hour” in the title.

  • ThomWhy8

Why does Hollywood have to make a remake of every good movie, why can’t they ever come up with an original idea?

  • Jerry

    My head just exploded

  • thad

Don’t call it Karate Kid!!!!! Crap, i’m so sick of it.

  • mk

No, no, no!! This will be a a big steamy turd pile.

Wow, why is Will Smith forcing us to accept his talentless sun. Give me a break. Yea yeah, I know he hasn’t had a chance, but that’s such nepotism for this little nobody to get the role automatically, when there are a thousand other kids that could do a much better job at it. I mean the kid isn’t the on that’s going to be selling the movie, you know, but they need to know how to act. And the kid needs to be fukking older. Goddddamnit Will Smith. Don’t take out your revenge on Hollywood because you can’t kiss white women on screen, by forcing us to accomodate your son as an acting talent.

I hope this is just a rumor, and not something set in stone, because if it’s a rumor, then perhaps all the vitriol spat and flung at the notion of this repulsive idea will be enough to send it to the grave from whence it came, horrid scum.

  • mk

No, no, no!! What a stupid idea. And EW, how dare you delete my previous big steamy t**d of a movie comment.

  • mk

oops, i guess you didn’t my previous comment. Sorry

  • Jay

I could complain this is a bad idea, but Hollywood has remade everything, from “Psycho,” to “Can’t Buy Me Love,” so why should this be any different. How’s this for a concept? Why not remake Academy Award winners from the past twenty or thirty years? How about Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in the roles originated by Robert Redford and Meryl Streep for an “Out of Africa” remake! I’m kidding of course. But you see where I’m going with this? What’s next? A remake of each movie from the “Back to the Future” trilogy with Zac Efron as Marty McFly and Vanessa Hudgens as Jennifer? How about casting Adam Sandler as Doc Brown? All he would need is a white wig and some aging makeup. Once again. Kidding! But you never know. Some studio exec could read this and take it seriously.

Dang, this will take Jackie’s time away from the Tuxedo 2.

  • richard

no not that no talent hack from when the earth stood still. That kid sucked pond water. Wait no let him make it so I can laugh my ass off when he falls on his face after he does crane. Crap on crap off!!!!

  • Ged

Just because Jaden wasn’t given an impressive role in The day the earth stood still does not mean that his career is over, like what many of you bloggers post here.
Try watching him in the Pursuit of Happyness.
And all this bull about nepotism, what can you say about Angelina Jolie, the daughter of Jon Voigt, or Michael Douglas, the son of Kirk Douglas? The nepotism argument is stupid at best.
And the movie has not even been released, we do not know the plot, and there are many here who are trashing it without even knowing anything about it other than who acts in the movie. Reminds me of the tons of naysayers when Daniel Craig was chosen to be the next Bond.

  • Kayde_Lyn

why why why why why!? Haven’t we had enough of mindless, unnecessary remakes yet!? There are thousands of writers in and around LA right now that have millions of unproduced ideas and Hollywood is spending money to make movies that are seriously a waste of film.

More in the continuing desecration of my childhood.

    1. Jaden’s too young.
    2. Jackie’s not old enough.
    3. Jackie is known for Kung Fu, not Karate (there is a difference)
    4. We know how it ends.
    5. THEY BETTER NOT STEAL THE CRANE KICK
    6. They did this already. With Hillary Swank.
    7. I agree with all the comments below.
    8. The movie isn’t old enough to be remade. It’s still fresh in our memories, and a classic that EVERYONE has seen, and should remain untouched. How did anyone with a conscience allow this to move forward?
    9. I hate Hollywood.
    10. And now I hate Will Smith.

  • t3hdow

    To Ged:
I agree with you on the flawed nepotism argument with the crop of successful actors/actresses that came from Hollywood parents. Oh, and add Keifer Sutherland (son of Donald Sutherland) to that list.
Still, the Karate Kid remake is too tough to sell on anyone that has fond memories of Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi (read: just about everyone that’s at least in their twenties…or even younger). With the wealth of original ideas lying dormant in Hollywood’s writers, how about focusing on their material instead of rehashing this?

  • dom

To those saying Jackie Chan is too young for this part, believe it or not, he’s older than Pat Morita was when he originally played Mr. Miaygi.

  • Alichat

OH DEAR GOD….what an astoundingly bad idea. Can Hollywood not come up with original ideas anymore???

  • Shamrock

In the word of Amy Poehler and Seth Myers: “Really Hollywood?” “Really?”

  • Jamie

The ONLY way I would want this movie to be made is if Ralph Machio where playing Daniel passing it on to a new generation. Remake no…next generation sequel maybe.

  • allen

Karate Kid is a classic. They can never take that away. It is actually a nearly perfect screenplay and film. I’m sure this film will not be very good. Something for little kiddies, where as the original had an appeal to all audiences.

  • Pat

This is worse than just an astoundingly bad idea. It’s insultingly inaccurate. I hope they change the title to “The Kung Fu Kid,” because karate is NOT a Chinese martial art. Just idiotic. How much are they paying Jackie Chan to get him to humiliate himself this way, like Sean Connery did for “Highlander 2″?

  • bradical

Dear God … Hollywood can’t make anything except for horrible Armageddonesque formula movies so they ruin ours. Lucas already ruined Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and now they are taking away Karate Kid? I think this is hilarious, Jackie Chan is Chinese so that is Kung Fu, Jaden Smith is black, and this is set in China, ridiculous. I hope this one waxes off before it gets made.

  • pjrake

“To those saying Jackie Chan is too young for this part, believe it or not, he’s older than Pat Morita was when he originally played Mr. Miaygi.”
and harrison ford was older in “skulls” than connery when he played his dad in “last crusade”!
