To prove once again that there are no new ideas in Hollywood, Disney is remaking its 1954 classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and is in negotiations with McG (Terminator: Salvation) to come aboard to direct. The project is in very early stages of development and the studio has screenwriter Bill Marsilli (Deja Vu) on board to revamp what was considered Disney’s first sci-fi film. So there’s still no word on whether they’ll keep Kirk Douglas’ singing harpooner in the movie.

That sucks that they would do this and drop the next chronicles of narnia film.
as much as the film could be good, they should have held on to narnia.
Bet they make Captain Nemo white again. In the original book, he’s an Arab; the studios wouldn’t have the guts to portray the character as written.
Haven’t they remade this movie a couple of times already?
Hollywood, where art thou originality?
…seriously.
All this story tells me is that there’s a serious shortage of good directors in Hollywood these days. McG directed the second Charlie’s Angels movie, remember it? Of course you don’t.
Nemo was originally supposed to be Polish fighting the Russians, but Verne’s publisher was concerned that that would anger the Russians, who were French allies at the time. So by “The Mysterious Island” Verne had made him Indian fighting the British, which for various reasons is a lot more compelling. So if they get an Indian actor for Nemo I’ll be there. Dream cast: Amitabh Bachchan = Nemo, Philip Seymour Hoffman = Arronax, Harry Lloyd = Conseil, and … um … well get a real Canadian actor for Ned Land for once!
I am also sick of the same re-hashed stuff coming out in the movies. There are very talented screenwriters, like myself, out there with our lovely Masters degrees hanging on the wall and about 10 scripts under our belts but with little resources to get them sold because it’s all “who you know”. A producer/director would rather take a chance on their friend’s movie than someone that has worked hard on their craft trying to get a foot in the door. Original ideas come from undiscovered talent but agents won’t even open their query letters and nobody will talk to you if you don’t have an agent. So everyone in hollywood cries that they’re not making money because nobody goes to the theater. If they would actually start taking meetings with new writers they might actually be able to start making some decent movies again that the public is willing to spend money on. There’s a slew of original ideas out there. I have 5 scripts, a novel, & 10 childrens books. Still wtg. for my phone call.
If Hollywood keeps to it’s tried and true m.o. they’ll completely change to story around and make Nemo an American. And even if they do keep the character Indian, they’ll probably use an actor like Hugh Jackman–and I love Hugh Jackman. Look at what Shyamanlan has already done with his casting of Avatar, The Last Airbender(a series heavily influenced by Inuit and Asian cultures). None of the major characters are of Asian descent. For shame, Hollywood.
McG already fried my eyeballs with the Charlie’s Angels sequel. I am hoping he can redeem himself with Terminator. But let’s not jump the gun and give him more things to destroy.
