Jay Leno to prime time: Why NBC is doing it

Dec 10, 2008, 08:00 AM | by Lynette Rice

Everyone knew the face of late-night TV would change when Jay Leno left The Tonight Show, but prime time as well? On Dec. 9, NBC announced that the reigning king of late night will stay put at the network by hosting an untitled new gabfest at 10 p.m. every weeknight, starting next fall. Leno, who is set to step down from The Tonight Show on May 29, will pack the first-ever Monday–Friday prime-time talk show with signature bits like those corny “Jaywalking” segments and a stable of A-list guests — which could set up a potential booking war with his successor, Conan O’Brien. (“I am absolutely thrilled that Jay is staying at NBC,” O’Brien said on his show Tuesday, although there are certainly drawbacks to the arrangement.)

Leno, who appeared at a press conference yesterday with his obviously relieved NBC bosses, said he’d prefer to “fight with family” than move to another network — a real possibility had NBC not persuaded him to reject offers by ABC, Fox, and even Sony to jump ship once his 17-year-run ends next spring. “My parents always said, Whatever you do in life, always try to come in fourth,” joked Leno of NBC’s current prime-time standing, before adding, “I’m comfortable with the people I work with. It makes it easier.”

For NBC, it’s also cheaper. Leno’s new deal isn’t exactly a bargain — published reports put the new contract at more than $30 million a year — but it’s a fraction of what it costs to program a scripted series in the 10 p.m. time slot, which hasn’t launched a bona fide hit in four years. The average drama now costs around $3 million an episode to produce; Leno needs roughly $400,000 per night for his new show. So NBC should save a mint by making him the new face of 10 p.m. (Middling but consistent performers like Law & Order: SVU are expected to move one hour earlier.) And unlike dramas, which air in originals only around 22 times a year, Leno can guarantee 46 weeks of fresh programming once he begins next fall. “Not only is the cost of the show lower, but we are offering advertisers a DVR-proof show that you can join in progress,” insists NBC co-chairman Marc Graboff. “It’s a better solution.”

And if there’s one thing NBC needs now, it’s solutions. Viewership is down 11 percent, the fall slate is in shambles, and the network needs to salvage whatever credibility it has left with Madison Avenue. This week, NBC/Universal sacked programming exec Teri Weinberg and studio president Katherine Pope, merged their jobs, and gave the newly created position to former international programming chief Angela Bromstad. In tapping Leno, the network further utilizes a proven late-night performer. While his current Tonight Show average of 4.8 million viewers is certainly less than what a hit scripted show would bring in, it’s more eyes than recent 10 p.m. NBC programs Lipstick Jungle and My Own Worst Enemy have been attracting.

The move also restores a sense of much-needed order. “Networks aren’t what they used to be in terms of prime-time programming,” says media analyst Harold Vogel. “This is probably a better time to try than any time in the past. It has a real shot of working.” Ironically, the competition could also end up benefiting. The reduction of scripted programs in the 10 p.m. hour provides the other networks leverage to attract better shows at a cheaper price — and could give other series in the time slot a better chance of survival. As for NBC, ceding prime-time territory can be risky, as evidenced by The CW’s decision to sell away its Sunday nights this fall. (In case you weren’t watching — and judging by the ratings, you weren’t — the farmed-out programming block failed miserably.)

In many ways, slotting Leno in prime time seems like an admission that NBC’s current series development process just hasn’t worked, and for now, it’s giving up on the hour that once launched hits like Law & Order and ER. Says one producer with a series currently airing on NBC, “It may be a very smart cost-saving measure, but it’s a sad day for the state of network TV.” Yet a damn good one for Jay Leno fans.

I loved the Tonight Show!! Jay is real, not a performer. What happens with Kevin and the other band members? I hope they go with him to prime time.

David Keithley Wed, Apr 29, 2009 at 11:21 AM EST

I just sent this to NBC.

Over the years, I have watched conan o'brien many times, at least for a few minutes, sometimes for 45 minutes or more. I have never seen anything that he said or did that was funny. Or really, I have never seen anything he did that was even entertaining. He cannot even interview. And I have watched him, because Jay Leno used to hype him and recommend him. As I REALLY enjoy watching Jay, I tried it. I really gave it a chance.

So, I guess in 5 weeks when Jay goes off, that will be the end of watching the late night show on NBC. And Jimmy Fallon does nothing but Saturday Night Live skits, so he isn't very entertaining either. Once a week I can watch some of this, that is enough.

It is a shame really, to have the legacy of Carson and Leno handed over to a no talent fool.

william Fri, Feb 27, 2009 at 05:35 PM EST

ha, jay leno is on ellerge.com what a jerk

John S. Fri, Feb 27, 2009 at 05:07 PM EST

Man, I can't believe there are so many Jay Leno lovers here. Leno *used* to be funny. I don't know when it happened, because I used to like him years ago. But in the last 5 years, his act is so tired. His monologues have a few good jokes mixed in with pathetic one liners (like 'why was 8 afraid of 7? Because 7 8 9!'). His interviews are probably the most tame and boring I've ever seen. He kisses every guest's butt. And it seems that all of the humor segments anymore are always Jaywalking... give me a break. I'm looking forward to getting some real comedy back in the tonight show with Conan. It's just disappointing that now we have to continue putting up with Jay Leno *every* night.

Shawn Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 07:14 PM EST

Conan O’Brien Sucks I can’t believe that they could think that a jokester could replace the king of comedy. J is one of the best and I would stop watching late night if Conan O’Brien took over. I would rather watch jimmy Kimble. If anything they should of had jimmy Kimble replace J if they were looking for a new face or cut costs.

Lizzy Sun, Feb 22, 2009 at 02:43 AM EST

Hey Chris, you should be a comedian. Everything you say is a complete joke. You think that Jay needs Howard Stern to get material....that's THE funniest thing I ever heard.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Mojo Sat, Feb 21, 2009 at 11:59 PM EST

Conan is slap stick and silly. Only simple minds can stay awake.

From the Republic of Eugene Or. Sat, Feb 21, 2009 at 11:49 PM EST

I go to sleep listening and watching Jay every night. He is funny, clean, thoughtful and a great interviewer. The band is fine and Keving play a pretty good partner when necessary. I am glad Jay is moving to 10:00 PM. I will now be able to climb in bed at a decent hour. Thanks NBC for making Jay feel welcome; the money isn't bad either. The deal is good for both you and Jay. Hi Mavis!

PhxGal Sat, Feb 21, 2009 at 05:59 PM EST

NBC, what were you thinkin'? I for one will not watch Conan. His humor is for "very late night." I don't watch him when I have insomnia; I won't watch him by choice in that time slot?

Ladybug Fri, Feb 20, 2009 at 10:02 PM EST

Will never watch Conan. He is stupid. Jay Leno is the best. I sure hope Kevin and the band go with him.
Jay should write all of his jokes.

GeneL Wed, Feb 18, 2009 at 05:31 PM EST

We sure will miss Jay and wish him the best. As for Conan we watched him very little and when we did watch him we waited til later in the show. His opening is the worst. Jumping in the air and grooms himself. Who is he pointing at? He is in love with himself. If he doesen't change his entrance, I'll switch channels for sure or go to bed. I will be amazed if NBC's rating don't go down.

Hollie Mon, Feb 16, 2009 at 03:03 PM EST

As it is, when Leno's show comes on I try desperately to find another channel with something on or I give up and go to bed. NBC cannot possibly guarantee more viewers to its advertisers and most certainly can't say that Leno is the best when it comes to funny. They should have taken a poll from their viewers, from us. Hope the money their saving is worth losing viewers.

Chris Wed, Feb 11, 2009 at 02:41 AM EST

Everyone knows Jay Leno has not one creative or original idea in his body. He's stolen so many things from the Howard Stern show. Many people don't take Howard seriously, but he is a genious interviewer and a revoulutionary and pioneer for reality TV and talk. I hate Leno!!

Lynn Heintz Sat, Jan 31, 2009 at 11:11 PM EST

There is one thing for sure regarding this family... when Jay leaves The Tonite Show we switch to CBS and Letterman - we tried watching Conan, but he is probably the most ignorant person on the tube today! NBC cannot even put together prime time, so why would we expect anything else!! We'll follow Jay where ever he goes. . .

me Fri, Jan 30, 2009 at 12:17 AM EST

jay leno has never been funny.
conan is hilarious...I just hope he stays the same with the switch.

lol_at_nbc Sun, Jan 18, 2009 at 11:35 AM EST

I watched Jay Leno until election night, when it became apparent his one-sided anti-Republican insults had had their intended effect. I hope his audience continues to dwindle as time passes. Americans know propaganda when they see it, and he helped perpetrate it.

Bety Atkins Sat, Jan 17, 2009 at 03:12 PM EST

I wish I could ask Mr. Leno a question.Have you become even more harsh to president Bush.Is it because you are staying?I have not even heard any put downs of NBc lately. The constant critical, beyond believe is why I do not watch Letterman. He is strickly for the far,far left audience.Good-bye Leno

Sandy Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 04:38 PM EST

I agree with Paula...give me Leno anytime, anyplace over Conan. I will change the station after 11:00. Will watch reruns of Law and Order.

ggymer Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 12:09 AM EST

Jay Leno any day over "what's his name letterman" At least Jay's material is unique and funny! But would like to see him stay on the same hours.

paula Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 12:43 AM EST

what are they talking about leno 58 and is too old, conan is just as old and no where near as funny as leno.

bigdog Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 08:41 AM EST

i myself, like leno alot the best thing nbc has is leno and the office.

letterman has not been funny in year's. i use to love him but his sh*t got so tired. the top ten list sucks nowadays and for all u talking about how much leno sucks people lie but ratings dont. leno has been #1 for 13 yrs.

jet Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:19 PM EST

Jay Leno is the only comedian, in my opinion on late night. Conan acts stupid therefore my friends and I will not be watching Conan when he takes Jay's slot.

Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

The 2007/08 writers strike had taken down a few shows (Heroes etc.), but now it looks like it took down an entire network. NBC has effectively closed shop with this poor Jay Leno primetime decision.

Can't wait for Mamma's Boy's!!! Good Luck Nikki!! Make us proud!!! We're rooting for you!!!

Cristina Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 05:01 AM EST

This is totally going to mess up the fall lineup. I think 5 nights a week is going over board. Why should Law and Order SVU and Law and Order be move to a different timeslot? It's doing fine at the 10pm slot?

I really hope this show fails. It may sound mean, but I have to say it. The only reason this is happening is because Leno is second guessing his decision to retire.

Rhonda Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Please find a slot for SVU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bill Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

I never watch Late night talk shows I prefer the shows like Chuck and SVU. I will look to the other networks for my 10 pm entertainment. NBC's decision is a bad one.

Linda Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 08:38 PM EST

If I lose Medium or The Office because of this, I'm protesting big time. Come on guys, if I want to watch Jay I can TiVo him.

Tian Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

I think it just may work. Scripted TV took a big hit after the writers strike. I know I lost interest in allot of shows that I considered must watch before the strike. I found many great, interesting cable alternatives. now with SAG threatening to strike and shut down the shows again its no wonder the networks would start looking for other alternatives. If SAG strikes I am finished with scripted TV and welcome any alternatives worth watching.

Frank Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

When Jay was the guest host on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, he was just wonderful. I was glad that he took over from Johnny. Over the years, he's had his ups and downs, but overall he's still a very entertaining host. In watching his show, I came to believe that he's a true gentleman and a regular guy--as much as one can be regular in his circumstances. He's also smart and funny as heck.

I hope that he'll get to take the band with him to his new show. They seem to have a good rapport between them. I especially like how Leno teases Kevin and vice versa.

I'm glad that we'll have many more good years of Leno. I've watched his show nearly every night and will continue to do so in the future.

Cindy Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

Will I be watching? Can not wait! Someone in an earlier post said that Jay was mean-spirited.
Have you watched Letterman the last few years? Talk about mean-spiritd. That's when I switched back to Jay and I'll never go back. There is always a chuckle - always. And there is an inate sweetness and kindess about him that you just can't deny. Sure, he's steely when he has to be in dealing with these higher ups. He's been in this business too long not to watch out for himself. Personally, I think he's getting better and sexier every night. I am so looking forward to the fall,so, YES, I will be watching.

anne Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

what will the ratings have to be for this show to be a success? I find it hard to believe that he can win this timeslot against original dramas on ABC and CBS. Its a big cop-out. If this experiment fizzles out or screws with Tonight Show ratings NBC is screwed!

Victor the Crab Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

Anyone who thinks Jay Leno is funny obviously has no sense of humor. His schtick is tired, boring, unimaginative, and intelligently insulting. He's the worst talk show host on telivision. Why anyone would watch him is beyond belief. A pox on you NBC for allowing this blight to continue in primetime.

Joe Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

This is a perfect example displaying the complete lack of imagination and innovation of the senior executives at NBC. Sure, they save money in the short run, but now the programming and development departments at the network report to the bean counters and that kills all creativity. I find it amazing that NBC is destroying a legacy of quality dramatic programming. This is the network that had Hill Street Blues, LA Law, St. Elsewhere, ER, The West Wing and Law and Order. If NBC wants to turn things around, my suggestion would be to fire all the senior executives at the top and replace them with more imaginative, hungry people. Senior management has gotten old and stale and it shows in the rot that the network has become.

Michael H. Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

Nope, won't be watching. I do not find Jay Leno the least bit funny or entertaining. I'll continue to watch L&O, SVU, and 30 ROCK if they remain on the air but otherwise I have no use for NBC.

adnaper Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

I stopped watching Jay because his monologues took almost half the show and they weren't funny! Many times his jokes were mean spirited and fell flat.
His Jay Walks spots are phony and ridiculous. The only semi-funny bit he has are the headlines. Maybe because he doesn't write those; he gets them sent by fans.
I certainly won't watch him in prime time.

CB Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

WOW! It looks like that CBS, ABC, and The Cable channels are the big winners. I was a big fan of NBC 10 o'clock time slot, but not now. What's the big plan for NBC if this doesn't work?

Lucy Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 09:09 AM EST

Boycott NBC!! First they cancel My Own Worst Enemy and then add a second stupid hour to The Apprentice to "fill empty timemslots". Now a five night a week hour of Jay Leno!!! I hope this costs NBC big time and not the favorite dramas that run in the 10 pm timeslot!

Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 08:07 AM EST

I just hope NBC knows what they are doing. If they screw around with Law & Order: SVU, I'm done. I don't care what else NBC does, but they'd better keep this show on the schedule and offer Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni a decent contract so they will stay. Come on, NBC, do *something* right!!

"A decent contract"???? They already make $400,000 an show, that is more than we will see in a lifetime and you think that is not "decent". They already make too much for the ratings they get.

Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 08:04 AM EST

So SVU going to be on Tuesdays at 8:00pm centeral time agains American Idol??? Good BUY SVU!!!

ElectAPromQueen (it didn't happen) Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 07:33 AM EST

Well, I said my peace on the other Leno post...another idea would be to hire the team behind HBO's defunct classic show, The Wire and create a compelling drama around Angela Bassett for Thursday's at 10pm. Angela's acting on ER is a must see and she too should be picked up by NBC for a development deal. If you pair her with the ER or Wire team then magic can ensue on Thursdays.

sw Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 07:16 AM EST

waste of money.. Not very funny anymore.. should of let him go to another network.. 400 thousand a show. come on get real...

Tony Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 05:59 AM EST

It's far from unanimous, but it does seem like the people knowing this is a bad idea outnumber the fools who'd watch Leno do his dopey shtick that he stole not from Howard Stern but from Steve Allen by about 3-2, at least. It's just too bad we're stuck with the 2009 version of Supertrain until it derails. It's hard to believe NBC was ever home to smart dramas like The West Wing, gritty realism like Hill Street Blues or even escapist fare like the Nightly News with Tom Brokaw. Maybe when the digital switchover happens in february, NBC should sign off instead for good and move their cult shows to other cable and network outlets.

Lily Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 04:45 AM EST

No, not at all interested.
Jay's so fake!
I am a Letterman gal.

JuanitaB Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 01:48 AM EST

Hate Jay Leno. will never watch the chin. he is soo annoying and all his jokes are the same routine all the time. will do this many political, this many economy jokes, etc. never writes his own stuff and is just not funny. nbc sucks for putting him on at 10 EVERY week night?? wtf?

Charles Volcher Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 01:01 AM EST

LAW & ORDER AND L&O SVU MAY YOU BOTH REST IN PEACE I WILL MISS YOU

sandra Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 12:17 AM EST

lets see jay leno on a talk show???? whats not to like!!!! i have watched the tonight show sence steve allen ,parr, johnny, then jay. he is funny, distinguished, not your every day guy. you have never hurd anything bad about him. married to the same wife. all around good guy. i intend to watch him where ever. and as far as conad. no class at all. very bad misstake from nbc. hope they are of the ones that learn from their misstakes. good luck jay. i love you.

Pinky Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 11:25 PM EST

Truly, Really.....the only quality shows on at that hour are the new dramas on TNT, TBS, Spike, The Shield, etc. !!!!!

mb Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 11:04 PM EST

I would much rather have Jay Leno on during prime time than that idiot Donald Trump and his phoney reality show.
Let's all hope NBC saves enough money from this move to cancel the rest of their stupid reality shows and concentrate on good scripted shows with real actors.

darrin Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 10:52 PM EST

i have never understand the ratings success of jay leno when i've hardly heard anyone say they actually watch or like him. good job jay you could've went out on top (ratings wise) but you chose to be humiliated instead in prime time. can't wait for conan and jimmy to take over nbc late night!

GARY STEFFE Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 10:08 PM EST

i love watching jay he has made my nights coming home from work fun

GARY STEFFE Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 10:08 PM EST

i love watching jay he has made my nights coming home from work fun

Used to watch him a lot Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 10:08 PM EST

Jay used to be really good for years. But something in him and his writers changed. The interviews became boring, the show became boring and I felt maybe it was his time to leave the show. Hopefully, now he will bring back the "right stuff" he had in his earlier years, and continue on with even more success!

Cine Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 09:48 PM EST

Do I remember correctly? Isn't NBC the one that decided to put reality programming and games shows in the 1st prime time hour, on the grounds they were cheaper and no one was watching any way, and now they aren't going to program the 3rd prime time hour, so they are going with 5 hours of programming a week? Seriously?

Marge Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 09:33 PM EST

Watched Jay talk about his new show - didn't sound thrilled, but it is what it is - the older I am the earlier I go to bed, so good for me. I was glad to hear that the Tonite Show Band sounds like it will join Jay - thank God...the reason I don't watch Conan and David L are their stupid band/bandleaders - and they think they are so hip???????????

Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 08:36 PM EST

I haven't watched Jay's monolouge since about '93. I watch Dave's just because its short. I only watch Dave or Jay if they have a good guest on and I don't expect that to change. I usually watch it on the net anyway.

Jay Leno on 5 nights a week is a little like Larry King Live. I'm afraid NBC's ratings will go the way of cable. But, I could be wrong Jay has been number 1 for 13 years.

Conan did get screwed over just like Dave, though. Maybe those things George Lopez said about Leno are true:

http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/lopez%20disses%20leno%20new%20celeb%20feud_1020109

DARLENE Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 07:34 PM EST

I LOVE JAY AND CONAN. I AM SO GLAD THAT HE IS STAYING WITH NBC. HE AND CONAN MAKE ME LAUGH SO MUCH. IT WILL BE GREAT TO KNOW THAT I WILL STILL GET TO SEE BOTH OF THEM. I WISH THAT THEY HAD LEFTED THINGS THE WAY THEY WERE WITHOUT AN INTERRUPTION. I WILL STILL WATCH BOTH SHOWS.

rosy Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 07:30 PM EST

Seems to me a lazy solution. Sure it saves money. But in the long run, it loses viewers. It also reminds me of the time when NBC ran Dateline almost everynight of the week. Any place they had a programming hole, up would pop an hour of dateline. I don't expect that I will watch Jay with any regularity at 10 pm. If some other scripted program doesn't catch my eye, I'll probably watch the local news or the re-run of Keith Olbermann.

T Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 07:14 PM EST

I just hope NBC knows what they are doing. If they screw around with Law & Order: SVU, I'm done. I don't care what else NBC does, but they'd better keep this show on the schedule and offer Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni a decent contract so they will stay. Come on, NBC, do *something* right!!

Mike Kuziel Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

Jaywalking? Signature Bit? That is a direct ripoff from Stern. All Leno's writers listen to Stern. That is where they get all their ideas!

JKK Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

RIP telvision. Cause of death - NBC.

Rockin' Rich Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

Sure. Jay is great.

And if NBC's 10 pm shows are any good, they'll be moved to 8 or 9. The problem was, they weren't.

My Own Worst Enemy had already been canceled, for example.

Jamie Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

I love Jay and Conan. Both are freaking hilarious! YAY! Goodbye to dumb shows

Kate Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

No, I will not watch. Leno is fine, but the type of entertainment he provides is not needed during the hours of 8-11. I am just thankful I have other channels to surf. Cable networks, I hope you have something good planned!

madison Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 05:30 PM EST

I love Jay! I am estatic I can continue to watch him on TV!

Tyler Durden Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

So this is why they're cancelling My Own Worst Enemy... to make room for Jay to not leave TV after all. Pathetic.

No, I won't watch. I don't watch him now and I'm not going to watch him keep more good tv shows off the air.

kristen Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

I expect nothing less from NBC. They move Lipstick Jungle (my fav. show) to Friday nights???? and put Mama's Boy's on Tues. at 10pm?? Are you serious? You are going to cancel Lipstick, don't want to bring back Friday Night Lights but are ok with a ridiculous Ryan Seacrest show? I hope this Leno idea TANKS and they lose millions of viewers ABC & CBS.

pai Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

No, I won't watch. I hope he gets canceled faster than a Caveman.

Chuck Goodson Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

I've watched the Tonight Show since 1960. When I was a child, dad worked 2nd shift, and I would take naps in the day, to be able to get back up at night and spend time with him. In doing so, we would watch the Tonight Show together.

So I will definitely be watching Jay when he moves to prime time. However, I'm going to really miss getting to see the Tonight Show.

Conan just isn't funny, moronic yes, embarassing to the point of causing me to cringe, yes, funny, definitely NOT! I've asked around, and I can't find anyone who thinks he's funny. I have tried to watch Conan several times over the years, and it always ends the same, I just can't do it. I just can't dumb down enough to enjoy it. I don't use drugs or alcohol, and maybe they would help, but I just can't see it being worth the risk to find out.

Starting next year, I will stop watching the Tonight Show for the first time in almost 50 years. That's just a sad, sad statement. NBC shouldn't have force Jay out!!!!!

Interesting idea. Once ER is gone, there's nothing at 10 I watch on NBC. but are they really putting 230 hours a year of prime-time content into the hand of a 58-year-old man who likes to ride motorcycles? One oil slick on the wrong road leaves a lot of programming time to fill.

Darrin Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

with 5 fewer available hours a week, it's much less likely great shows like Chuck or Friday Night Lights will ever get a chance, because NBC will keep rolling out cheap crap like Fear Factor, Gladiators, Biggest Loser, and Superstars of Dance because they get slightly better ratings, it's a sad day for network TV.

Brad Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

Jay Leno has the best late night show on the air. The ratings clearly show this. With Conan taking over the helm of The Tonight Show franchise, NBC is going to need a verity show that will work. Not sure if Conan will, but this new Leno show hopefully will!

I am exvited

Mikey M Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

I still haven't forgiven NBC cancelling Journeyman. Then they let Scrubs go. They are assinine.

Mikey M Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

I don't know anyone who watches Leno. Most people are in bed to go to work the next day. How Leo pulls in better ratings than Connan or Letterman, I do not know. Are these the same people watching Dancing with the Stars, American Ido and Deal or No Deal?
I give it a year.

Mark Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

I would not be shocked to see a bunch of NBC affiliates start an hour-long 10pm news in the fall and delay Leno until 11, pushing Conan to Midnight. The CW has a better and more buzzworthy lineup than NBC does right now.

Captain Average Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

Jay has a few bits I like, but mostly, he's boring. I'll be passing on his nightly primetime show.

Jack W. 12-10-08 Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

For your info, each nite I watch the local news, then Jay Leno. I will continue to watch local news And then may go to Dave Letterman. Have watched this show since its inception. Will miss this show. Oh well, progress must go on.

Hurray! Can't wait for Leno. Love him and love the idea of a 10:00 variety/talk show everyday and I would never watch Conan. Way to go NBC!

Sarah Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

DVR-proof means that there won't be an ongoing story, so that viewers can watch the show at any time. Advertisers aren't always as excited about complicated story arcs that keep new viewers from tuning into a show. You'll be able to record this with your DVR if you want to. It just means that if a person can only tune in a few times a week, the person won't miss key storylines like the person might with a drama show.

To Geoff Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

Ha! You put "New Coke" and "re-electing Bush" in the same category as being equally catastrophic events. I'm not disagreeing, mind you. It's just hilarious.

DanOregon Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

What bugs me the most about this move is that NBC is slashing its development of new shows with the assumption that this will work out. Shows take time to develop. If this thing crashes and burns, gets just 3 to 4 mill a night, NBC will be way behind if they decide to junk it. Funny, that this news came on the same day that The Mentalist became the first rookie show to finish on top of the ratings. I really hope the other nets don't follow the example of the formerly no. 1 network, that is now no. 4. That would be stupid.

Pip Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

Come on...NBC probably has more money stashed away than God. Why are they saying this is more or less based on a money decision? Sounds like they are just lazy to me. We like shows that make us think...you know...use our brains and not like a 5th grader. Jay Leno or any of the talk shows do not make me have to think. Sometimes my eyes just glaze over just like they do whenever I happen to flip and see a little of a reality show. Give us some good, story lines with actual plots....oh, wait....You took all those off! Why can't the networks see that more than half of the TV audience is over 50 and enjoy actually thinking and trying to solve a mystery, crime, murder, etc., before the hour is over. Not all of us want to see stupid people on the reality shows. At our age we are trying to get away from stupid people. Give us something worth watching and then PLEASE DON'T TAKE IT OFF WHEN IT GETS GOING GOOD!!!!!!

Renee Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

Can someone please explain to me why everyone loves Jay Leno so much? Honestly, I do not understand it. Granted, I don't watch many late night talk shows except The Daily Show, which I watch religiously (Jon Stewart totally rocks!), but Leno is the worst! Bump Craig Ferguson up a notch! He's great!

Orion Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

I love this idea!! I stay up till 11:30 every night just to watch Leno. Now I'll be able to get to bed at a decent time!

Taharat Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

Thank God,the execs.at NBC finally grew a pair of cohones..Jay Leno is by far the best and certainly most likable comedian alive today!! Everyone including Jay knew that once he left NBC,other networks would make a mad rush for his signature,so the faltering really didn't have a choice!

Jake Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

Who's Jay Leno? LOL!
Uhm... Can you say Jon & Stephen are gonna kick his a--?
(I bet you can...)

Emma Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

Has anyone considered that this may be a generational issue? I'm in my 20s and none of my friends watch Leno (I like Craig or Conan). My parents and their friends seem to enjoy Leno's tame style. And disliking reality show dates you as well . . .

BK Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 01:56 PM EST

This jusy shows NBC's utter disregard for quality adult programming at the 10pm ET slot. Prime time programming has been a mess over there and they desperately need a vision for where they want to take the network. Rehashing old 70's/80's shows and now Jay won't cut it. Viewers will continue the trek to cable - TNT's new offering Leverage and the returns of Closer and Saving Grace along with HBO and Showtime's strong slate of solid programming is where I will spend my viewing time. At least Sci Fi has one more season of Battlestar Galactica. The Peacock network is looking more and more like a cooked goose.

Billy Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

I will not watch the early show

Geoff Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

This will rank up there with "New Coke" and re-electing Bush as one of the biggest blunders in history.

JT Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

I'll probably watch if nothing else is on, but in this time zone he'll be on at the same time as the Daily Show & Colbert Report, so that might not happen too often.

sara Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

Yes, I would be inclined to check it out on the nights that I don't have a favorite 10 PM program to watch. I think it will work.

Ace Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

I like how they noted it was DVR proof. You know why, NBC? Because it will NOT be a must see show. The only reason most people watch Leno is that they are awake late and it is either him or a repeat of Seinfeld. Stop being lazy and develop new drama ideas! Stupid networks and stupid viewers for making it come to this.

Mike Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

Leno is a total tool. I do not like looking at or listening to that walking/talking chin. They should have given hs gig to Letterman in the first place.

JMJ Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

Will not watch. NBC seems to be committing suicide and I have no need to see that. I will still watch Chuck and the Office, but that's it as far as NBC is concerned. 10PM is too early for a talk-show. I like my mindless amusement to come after getting depressed by my local newscast, not before. It's a fight between Dave and Conan for me, but Leno's officially out of the running as far as I'm concerned.

chuck Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

It takes talent to write and produce good drama. It only takes a lot of hot air to produce a talk show.
