Ratings: 'Chuck' delivers for NBC, but CBS still rules Monday

CBS' Monday night lineup just keeps getting stronger with all of its comedy series breaking respective ratings records, according to preliminary overnight numbers. Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother both hit 11.4 million during the 8 p.m. hour; that's Theory's best ratings ever and HIMYM's best audience since January 2006. Two and a Half Men, meanwhile, also had a blockbuster night with a whopping 17.9 million viewers, its best since 2005. And the charming Worst Week benefited from its Men lead-in with its series-best numbers (12.1 million).

Good news for fans of NBC's Chuck: Last night's holiday-themed episode (featuring Cliffhanger's Michael Rooker!) nabbed a solid 7.6 million viewers. For those keeping track, that's a 600,000 boost from the previous week's outing. Heroes closed out its first half of the season with 7.8 million, the same as last week. And the sad My Own Worst Enemy ended the evening with a paltry 4.1 million eyes.

ABC re-aired I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown which only managed 7.4 million viewers, down from last week's airing of the more iconic A Charlie Brown Christmas, which reached 4 million more fans. At 9 p.m., the two-hour special, Drama High: The Making of a High School Musical, bombed with an average of only 3.7 million.

Over on Fox, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles improved slightly over last week's 5.2 million with 5.3 million, while Prison Break declined slightly to 5.7 million.

The CW struggled, with repeats of Gossip Girl (1.7 million) and One Tree Hill (1.1) providing no competition.

Yeah, it was Listen 2 This. I liked those, but then they started not being exclusively about music, (they started to include video games & comic books too) http://cleaning.emenace.com/upholste2b/15.html tile and grout cleaning undefined

In a perfect world, Chuck would be destroying the competition. I especially enjoy the Buy More antics of Morgan, Jeff, and Lester. Oh, and the woman who plays Sarah is beautiful beyond words.

They really need to stop putting Chuck up against The Big Bang Theory. They both overlap in target demographics. Given the choice between the two, I picked Chuck but I also enjoy The Big Bang Theory. I bet both shows would do even better if they weren't up against each other.

BIG BANG BANGED CHUCK ALL OVER THE PLACE

kristy Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 08:05 AM EST

I love Chuck.

chuck Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 02:13 AM EST

I always DVR chuck, but watch the big bang theory, HIMYM, two and a half men, then chuck. Monday night is the best night on TV.

Right now, I think it's between Big bang and Chuck. They are 2 of the best shows on TV.

GGKIII Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 10:32 PM EST

Its interested how you applaud a NEW holiday episode of CHUCK for getting 7.6 million but diss an old old old Charlie Brown rerun for getting only 7.4. All in the perspective, huh?

Kathy B. Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

Chuck was great as usual. Glad to see so much of the Buy More.

mk Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

Chuck deserves a bigger audience. A great cast.

B Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

My husband and I watch Theory and HIMYM every Monday night and love being able to enjoy two great shows. I even dumped Heroes. which sucks this season, for HIMYM!

Ace Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 08:10 AM EST

Chuck is one of my favorite shows on TV right now and I'm glad to see it is doing better :). Hopefully NBC will take note and promote it more.

Sheldon Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 07:59 AM EST

Go CHUCK!!!!

Debaloo Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 07:03 AM EST

YEAH for HIMYM! I am so excited to see the rating continue to climb for this awesome show. WTG CBS for stucking with it when the ratings weren't all that great.
I'm not a Chuck fan myself but I hope NBC keeps the show going. Clearly many people really love it.

Frodo Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 02:59 AM EST

Screw Chuck, THE BIG BANG THEORY owns all!!!

Matt Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 11:06 PM EST

Great news for Chuck...its my favorite show running a very very close second to Lost, which is saying a lot. I Was just checking today for info on how many viewers it was pulling in because I too was getting worried about its fate.

K Hardy Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

I think a "paltry" 4.1 million viewers is pretty good for a show that had a cancellation announcement over a month ago. MOWE is the best show on tv, they should have tried a different night.

tom Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

Go Chuck!! Another awesome episode last night!

TVG Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

Love Chuck, PB, & BBT, and to a slightly lesser extent, HIMYM (yay NPH!)

Otis Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

Big Bang and 2-1/2 are two of only a few shows on my Must See list. Had to TiVo Chuck, which is also a priority.

Captain Awesome Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

Awesome.

Dan Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

Chuck is an awesome show, easily one of the best on TV. Great Die Hard references last night, especially Reginald VelJohnson as Big Mike's cousin. And I agree that ew needs pay more attention and do a TV Watch for this show.

Jesse Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

Chuck is week in and week out the most entertaining hour on television. It's just a really fun show. Glad to see it improving, sad to see it going on min-hiatus.

jcpdiesel21 Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

I'm glad to see that the ratings were up for Chuck last night. Too bad the show is now on hiatus until February 2nd, so who knows what will happen with those new viewers. Nice move, NBC.

tyler Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

Prison Break is the best show on Monday nights hands down. Their twists and double crosses actually make sense and work story wise.

ryan Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

Chuck was enjoyable but makes no sense. Won't Fulcrom keep coming back now that they know Casey and Sarah are protecting someone at Buymore? Realistically, they would just kidnap all the employees and find out who it is.

P Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

It's funny that the comments I've read are pretty much all devoted to Chuck yet there's never a recap on this site. It's consistently the best show on television right now and deserves more recognition.

John Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

YES CHUCK! AND HIMYM! In the wake of losing my precious Pushing Daisies, it's nice to know that two of my other favorites are gaining momentum!

Liddy Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 03:33 PM EST

Thank goodness for Chuck's good ratings. I've been worried that it might get cancelled. For those of you still not watching, it's worth your hour on Monday night. Consistently entertaining.

Mike Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

Things are really bad on TV when an awful show like Two and a Half Men attracts almost 18 million viewers. Is this what people are really watching? Wow.

Theresa Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

Chuck is one of those rare shows that just keeps getting better. This season has been fantastic and hilarious. Glad more people are watching. I was starting get worried.

Peter Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

Chuck + Die Hard + Rooker = pure unadulterated awesomeness!

janeway Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

Ditto! I loved "Chuck" from the start and now my husband is hooked. Glad to see more people are discovering it. Take note NBC-keep promoting this show.

bostonbean Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

Chuckles rocks!

Jackie Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

Yeah! Go Chuck!
