Box Office Report: 'Four Christmases' jingles all the way to the bank

Dec 1, 2008, 09:45 AM | by Joshua Rich

Categories: Box Office

Fourchristmases_l The long, always competitive Thanksgiving weekend is over, and Four Christmases has decked the halls with a big box office victory, easily outpacing Twilight, Australia, and all the rest of the movies at the multiplex along the way.

Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon's comedy won the robust weekend with a much-better-than-expected $46.7 mil from Wednesday through Sunday, according to early estimates. That makes it the third-best Thanksgiving weekend opener ever, after Toy Story 2 ($80.1 mil) and last year's Enchanted ($49.1 mil). The film also grossed a hefty $31.7 mil over the traditional three-day weekend (and fair warning, I'm going to be giving both five-day and three-day totals in this report, so get focused -- you know, drink some coffee before reading on, or something). That's Vaughn's top premiere sum since The Break-Up's $39.2 mil two and a half years ago, and Witherspoon's best bow since Sweet Home Alabama's $35.6 mil more than six years back.

Credit a somewhat older, female audience that gave the movie a so-so CinemaScore grade of B. But, as I have said before, all of those statistics don't matter much when you consider one important fact: With the word "Christmas" in the title, this film is sure to hang on well into the yuletide season.

Twilight (No. 2) was next in the five-day rankings, with $39.5 mil, although its three-day weekend total was a more disappointing $26.4 mil, a steep 62 percent drop from its huge debut a week ago. Still, the Stephenie Meyer saga continues to draw in teen girls, and it crossed the $100 mil mark in just eight days (its domestic haul is $119.7 mil), so there's still plenty of good news there.

Third place over the long weekend went to Bolt, which grossed $36 mil from Wednesday through Sunday, and $26.6 mil in the three-day frame (sure enough, that's more than Twilight banked in the same period). Thus, Disney's animated feature enjoyed a rare thing in box office land: A week-to-week gain. Bolt was up 1 percent from its debut sum of $26.2 mil last time around. So, yeah, get accustomed to seeing this film in your local movie listings for weeks to come.

Quantum of Solace (No. 4) held strong with $28.1 mil over five days and $19.5 mil over three; its domestic sum is a stellar $142.1 mil to date. The Nicole Kidman-Hugh Jackman-Baz Luhrmann epic spectacle, Australia, rounded out the top five with an unspectacular $20 mil over five days and just $14.8 mil over three (this despite an A- CinemaScore grade from a largely older-woman audience). And Transporter 3 (No. 7) was also an afterthought with $18.5 mil from Wednesday through Sunday and $12.3 mil on the three-day weekend.

Indeed, there's no need to waste time talking about those films when we can applaud Gus Van Sant's limited-release biopic Milk, which cracked the top 10 while playing in only 36 theaters. The Sean Penn starrer grossed $1.9 mil over the five-day frame and $1.4 mil from Friday through Sunday, a marvelous average of $38,375 per venue.

Overall, the cumulative box office total was up about 4 percent from Thanksgiving weekend a year ago, when Enchanted and This Christmas led the way. And if you'll excuse me now, I'm going to start work on a movie I've been thinking about making -- it's called Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, and although I only have a title, I know it's gonna be a blockbuster.

Twilight was not the best movie EVER. Hell, NO. But even though i was disappointed (being a twilight fan), it was actually quite better the 2nd time i watched it. Anyway, it may have dropped there in terms of movie sales, but here in our country, outside US, it started in the last week of November and the people are still lining up until now! It's still going to make money outside your country you know. It's the number one film here, although big box movie does not necessarily translate to a GOOD movie. All I'm saying is, Twilight is really making a HUGE amount of money. With that, they should make a BETTER movie with the sequel...or else...

Helen Tue, Dec 9, 2008 at 08:05 AM EST

Reese looks great. I read here (www.projectweightloss.com) about her new workout and, wow, it will become a trend in Hollywood for sure.

nic Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

Twilight is still VERY high on the list of top films in america (Number 3) and when it comes out in Britain its predicted that it'll be top of the list for at least 2 weeks. [Four christmases is only top because it is a U with a high demographic and it's near xmas] Sure, its not as good as the book but its still an amazing film.

Twilight is a horrible film, perhaps the worst ever. I feel sorry for people who think it is a great film, they obviously have no taste.

That vince Vance movie is horrid anything with him is bound to be bad.Who were the idiots who paid money to see that crap *shakes head**.

Esme Cullen Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 11:10 PM EST

Twilight is still doing well at the box office in my opinion. It's a very good movie. Can't wait until they start filming New Moon.

brack Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 08:34 PM EST

Twilight was a good movie. It's not Titanic, but it's certainly not as terrible as some want you to believe. People are hung up on special effects and character development. I thought the visual shots/effects were adequate, and never distracting. I can't tell you how often there are movies that have a ton of CGI, but almost no soul. As far as character development, it's not as extensive as the novel, but that would've been near impossible in 2 hours. Bella, Edward, and Charlie were well developed, and that's what was important. The others had their moments. The last third of the film feels a bit rushed and unfocused, but it ends on a good note with Edward and Bella. I think with a bigger budget and more fleshed out script, the next movie will be better and this one will be better appreciated.

Jennifer Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

Twilight has made over $110 million in two weekends and that's just domestic. Most of the major international cities are having premieres beginning this week.

Not too shabby for a movie made on a shoestring budget of $37 million. Of course, I've seem films made on a $100 million that were horrible.

And if people hate Twilight so much, Summit must've done something right ;)

tigerlily Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

people don't think twilight was the best movie ever. Those who haven't read the books don't and Twilighters love it because they already love the characters from the books. The move had some good qualities and missed out on huge opertunities. It's not for everyone, just like Jackass isn't for everyone. But for twilight fans it is their brand of heroin.

tigerlily Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

Why are people so easily stirred by Twilight. For those who didn't like it, I can't blame you. For Those who loved it, great. But Summit needs to know that if New Moon is done with the same poor standards, fans might just be pissed enough to skip Eclipse. Bigger budget, better effects, and MORE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT are musts!

Phil Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

WHat's with people thinking Twilight is the best movie ever? Is it because they've never seen a movie before? Or, have movie standards become inverted like in a Bizzaro world where "yes" actually means "no" and "great" means "terrible?"

Jima Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

Twilight did way better than people expected of it so it doesn't really matter. For a 37mil movie, I thought it was gonna be much worst. Anyway, if they put more money in New Moon, I am sure it'll be another sucess. As for Bolt? LOL it's doing so poorly. In my opinion, the only reason why it beat Twilight is because you pay more for 3D tickets than a normal one so shut it people.

LOL Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

Twilight had a 62 percent drop because it's not as good as people hoped it would be! Not good enough for every fan to return to the theater and shell out more money to see it again. Not good enough to convince the non-fans to go see it. EW in particular has shoved Twilight down everyone's throats, and the movie turned out to be just okay. Many die-hard fans of the books were NOT as impressed with the movie as they hoped. It was never an Oscar contender (LOL), and it did really well for what what spent to make it. If the 2nd place ranking burns so much, get all your friends, family & random strangers back into the theater to see Twilight again.

StupidLamb Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

GO TWILIGHT! I am tired of people being so negative about it! It's the best movie and everyone knows it! MAKE MORE!! MAKE MORE!! :) GO VAMPIRES!!

Jackie Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 11:20 AM EST

I saw Four Christmases and really liked it. It's not brain surgery, but it's not supposed to be. It's a sweet family-friendly comedy. And I think it did great because of that. And I'm with the majority: enough of Twilight! With as much hype as it got, it dropped a hella lot in the second week.

Rose Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

My God. Twilight fans are scaring me. I want to watch it when it comes out on DVD but you people are turning me off. You hate people that diss Twilight yet you are doing the same thing to Christmas and Bolt. Is this a case of "You can dish it, but you can't take it?"

Rob Grizzly Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

Ug. Between this and Beverly Hills Chihuahua, I'm beginning to think American movie-goers have zero standards

Carolyn Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

Summit needs to ramp up the advertising to all ages, just because this movie begins in high school doesn't mean it's a high school film. Twilight easily trumps Four Christmases (tired theme reworked!)Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are definitely stars! A movie for all ages. Excellent casting, excellent story telling! I really hope they make all four books!

Amy Leigh Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

So all of you Twilight haters want EW to not mention the movie when it was in the top 5? Huh? You can't give a box office report without mentioning Twilight especially since it's only in its second week of release. Thanks to all of the people that saw 4 Christmases and hated it. Now I know to spend my $10 on Australia instead.

BklynGirl Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 09:17 AM EST

I'd guess Twilight lost the lead because a lot of people who went to see it didn't rave about it once it was over. I know 4 people (Twilight fanatics) who saw it and all were disappointed. Word of mouth can make or break any movie. Not that it's broken though. It made a lot of money due to the over-hype, and I'm sure the coming sequel will make even more. I heard the reviews, so I'll catch it on DVR someday.

I saw Four Christmases, and it was a cute movie. I think Reese Witherspoon & Vince Vaughn deserve credit for the movie doing so well. It may have the word "Christmas" in the title, but the lead actors were a big factor in how well it did (imo).

lacey Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 08:44 AM EST

This whole who has the number one movie is very interesting. No Twilight did not old the #1 spot for two weekends in a row, and I'll be curious to see how it finishes up. With that here a few movies that never made it to #1 at all. My Big Fat Greek Wedding-$240, Dances with Wolves-$220, Chicago-$170. Now, I'm not saying Twilight is like any of these movies becasue it's not. Just found this interesting, that's all.

max-emulators.com Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

why does Titanic have such a bad rep? I guess the haters have the vocal majority.

When it comes right down to it, Titanic is a great movie and James Cameron is astounding.

meso soup Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 08:27 AM EST

Thought Twilight was pretty good - Hoping for more from Australia in the coming weeks. It was amazing!

Stacey Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 08:10 AM EST

Twihard I agree with you on that. If the movie would have been more trueful to the book it would be bringing in more money. With that said, they, meaning Summit, the director, Meyers...heck, even the actors never thought the movie would be doing as well as it is. They were hoping for $20mil the first weekend. So good for them. I did see Four Christmsases this weekend because like both of the actors in the movie. Big mistake. My daughter saw Bolt, she liked it. My son saw Twilight and he liked it. I think Four Christmases will drop, but I will be curious to see if Twilight can keep them coming in. By the way, I did see the movie. Twice. The first time dissapointed the second time enjoyed it.

Shamrock Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 07:40 AM EST

Twilight couldn't even hold on to the top spot for two weeks.

David Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 07:20 AM EST

Twilight = Over-hyped movie of the year!
Bwahahaha!

Cindy Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 04:49 AM EST

UmMm Twilight still made like 30 something million and people thought they weren't going to make anymore so TWILIGHT HAS DONE REALLY WELL MORE THAN I EXPECTED SO PEOPLE GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE !

TwiHard Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 04:47 AM EST

If Twilight the movie was as good as the book it would of made so much more money JMO but the movie was good :)

TW Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 04:46 AM EST

Don't compare Titanic to Australia ! Australia wasn't that good and I see why it only made 14 million.

Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 04:44 AM EST

Why are you making fun of Twilight it's made it's money SO SHUT THE HELL UP !
It wasn't as great as the book but it was worth the money !

Four Christmas, Transporters and Australia put together couldn't beat Twilight it's first week so DON'T HATE !!
And if the movie actually had EVERY TWILIGHT FAN LOVING IT WE WOULDN'T EVEN BE HAVING THIS CONVERSATION !

Sione Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 04:42 AM EST

Bolt wasn't better than Twilight are you kidding me ? I' m a guy who went and saw both and thought Bolt was annoying or maybe it was Miley's voice but it was like every other disney movie.

Kass Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 04:40 AM EST

Whatever Twilight made more all week than Bolt and wow 200000 more !
I'm watching Twilight every weekend till it goes away so Summit add my 100 dollars to your total !!

TWILIGHT WAS AWESOME NOT PERFECT BUT GOOD ENOUGH AND EXPECT NEW MOON TO BE WAY BETTER !!!! and don't hate were use to it and it doesn't make a difference what you say !!!

LOVE MY TWILIGHT !!!

Sam Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 04:38 AM EST

Four Christmases was one of the worse movies I've seen all year. Twilight was even better and I'm not a fan !
SO PEOPLE DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON FOUR CHRISTMASES OR EVEN THAT BOLT MOVIE WHICH IS LIKE EVERY OTHER MOVIE AND JUST WATCH TWILIGHT IT WAS BETTER THAN THOSE TWO !!
