'Twilight' reviews roundup: And the verdict is...

Nov 21, 2008, 01:31 PM | by Amy Wilkinson

Categories: Movie Biz

Twilightkiss_dl Let the Twilight blood-letting begin. Though reviewers were asked to hold their critiques until the vampire flick's Nov. 21 release date, several reviews are now available online, and for the most part, critics aren't impressed. They unanimously concede that the movie's target audience -- teens with closets full of Team Edward hoodies, who have breathlessly read (and reread) Stephenie Meyer's four-part series -- will thoroughly enjoy the film. But for the uninitiated, consensus so far seems to be that it's an ineffectual love story combined with cheesy special effects that will leave moviegoers craving more.

A quick summary of the reviews, after the jump.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
Verdict: Positive
“[Director Catherine Hardwicke] has reconjured Meyer's novel as a cloudburst mood piece filled with stormy skies, rippling hormones, and understated visual effects. What Hardwicke can't quite triumph over is the book's lackluster plot. On screen, Twilight is repetitive and a tad sodden, too prosaic to really soar. But Hardwicke stirs this teen pulp to a pleasing simmer.” —Owen Gleiberman

ASSOCIATED PRESS
Verdict: Negative
"But much of what made the relationship between Edward and the smitten Bella Swan work in Meyer's breezy book has been stripped away on screen. The funny, lively banter -- the way in which Edward and Bella teased and toyed with one another about their respective immortality and humanity -- is pretty much completely gone, and all that's left is a slog of adolescent angst." —Christy Lemire

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
Verdict: Neutral
"Twilight is a film of intelligent strengths and easily avoidable weaknesses, a modest film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's publishing phenomenon. It is faithful to its source material, which will likely please the fan base....So where does the movie fall down? On a simple but crucial matter of visual magic. Whenever something fantastic requires straightforward on-screen depiction, Twilight looks like a weaker episode from Season 6 of Charmed." —Michael Phillips

EMANUEL LEVY
Verdict: Negative
"Like other movies that are more significant as sociological and demographic than artistic phenomenon, Twilight will be embraced by very young female viewers, say ages 10-17, and less so by the female college crowd. If young femmes manage to take their boyfriends to see it as a date movie (and on one level it is a date movie), Twilight should score big, really big at the box office."

ORLANDO SENTINEL
Verdict: Neutral
"The situations, in high school and among the vampires, are over-familiar. But the dialogue is mostly flip and hip. Some of the laughs are intentional, some not. A vampire using the word 'vegetarian?' Funny." —Roger Moore

ROGER EBERT
Verdict: Neutral
"If there were no vampires in Twilight, it would be a thin-blooded teenage romance, about two good-looking kids who want each other so much because they want each other so much. Sometimes that's all it's about, isn't it?"

VARIETY
Verdict: Negative
"A disappointingly anemic tale of forbidden love that should satiate the pre-converted but will bewilder and underwhelm viewers who haven't devoured Stephenie Meyer's bestselling juvie chick-lit franchise." —Justin Chang

TIME
Verdict: Positive
“So Twilight isn't a masterpiece — no matter. It rekindles the warmth of great Hollywood romances, where foreplay was the climax and a kiss was never just a kiss.” —Richard Corliss

USA TODAY
Verdict: Negative
And despite questionable casting, wooden acting, laughable dialogue and truly awful makeup, nothing is likely to stop young girls from swarming to this kitschy adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's popular novel.” —Claudia Puig

WASHINGTON POST
Verdict: Positive
“On the whole, Twilight works as both love story and vampire story, thanks mainly to the performances of its principals. Pattinson and Stewart want to convince you that their characters are an undead freak and the girl who, against all logic, loves him. Yet they do it not by selling you on what makes Edward and Bella so different, but by finding their flesh-and-blood humanity.” —Michael O’Sullivan

I did love all 4 books especially the last one. Stephanie Meyers has an amazing mind to be able to write such a story and everything just links together.I agree with other people's comments about the character of Jasper. He seems physchotic lookin in the movie. I would love for Stephanie Myers to make a book about Jacob & Nessa.

This is very horror movies and very interesting. Twilight is a film of intelligent strengths and easily avoidable weaknesses, a modest film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's publishing phenomenon. Advantages of a free movie download site, there are some more benefits which you can better avail by visiting online for the free movie download site.

This movie was absolute cheese!! Lame ass dialouge and poor acting. You will like it if you are in junior high or early high school at best. its an adolescent romance.

Karl Wed, Apr 8, 2009 at 09:19 PM EST

Well, the book wasn't as great as everyone thinks. No real plot, just a good romance. Now, the movie, the romance was glazed over, leaving nothing but a plotless mesh of bad acting, corny special effects, and nothing unique.

i loved the movie when i saw it but i loved the book more. stephenie Meyer is a really really talented writer. But i think her story should have been the movie. Not editing and taking out anything. Obviously her books are amazing so why change the movie? The relationship didnt seem deep enough to be about love. It was just like boyfriend and girlfriend. Edward is extremely amazing. He is the best character for twilight. But bella was disapointing. It was boring. During the kiss it was too much what she did. He was trying to be romantic and she ruined the moment by like attacking him. And i would have liked more conversation. This is a long movie but shows no love. My favorite characters are edward cuz hes just wow. i would love someone like that. i would love to have a friend like alice becuz shes so nice. Esme is good. Calisle Was cool becuz he accepted the relationship. Emmet was tight. Hed seem like a cool older brother. he goes with anything and still smiles and got paople's back.

maria Fri, Apr 3, 2009 at 05:46 PM EST

omg. i loved the movie when i saw it. But i read the book and they left out the best scenes.i was upset becuz they didnt say"i love u" and bella had no emotion or personality. there should have been more conversation and romance. it seemed the kiss was all lust and just no love. Also in the book they held eachother and kissed and actually talked instaed of just looking. Edward is amazing. And he is my favorite. Nothing said they were boyfriend and girlfriend. Bella was just not that inlove. she said she was inlove but never once showed it. i loved their relationship more in the book. it seems they didnt know too much about eachother. And bella was uncomfortable. Robert was perfect for edward. I wouldnt care if the movie was three or 4 hours long, it would have been the best if it was exactly like the book. the blood type part was when the connection grew and the part was just left out. They didnt talk about how they cared about eachother, and i loved the characters. just more emotion.

Damin Fri, Mar 27, 2009 at 03:33 AM EST

The editing was bad, it was choppy and the special effects were poor.

The movie is not like the book. But then again, how any adaptations really succeed in capturing the feeling of the book? That still doesn't excuse the fact that there was excessive bad and cringe-worthy acting performances by the lead characters in the movie. Most of the time it felt insincere, forced and confusing as to why they would even want to be around each other. Even though I agree that Rob does look the part, if he wasn't so good looking, no one would have bought his performance and would instead see him as the creep that lurkes in the dark, ogling you and just asking for a restraining order. Pretty shallow. Its hard enough trying to accept the idea that the plot can be compared to someone having a juicy fillet mignon dangling in front of them when their on a bread crust and water diet, then going to the ends of the earth to protect that mouth watering fillet mignon from being eaten by someone else and at the same time restraining themselves from scarfing it down and somehow still managing to fall in love with that fillet mignon. And the bit about blaming the budget for the disappointments, they don't seem to understand that people will look past corny graphics and different faces than you imagined when the acting performances are on target. Overall, it wasn't the worst movie I've seen. Watch it if you have a couple hours to kill.

angelina Sat, Mar 21, 2009 at 02:29 PM EST

I waited until the movie came out on DVD and am grateful I didn't wade through the preteens at the theater. The acting was horrific, their make-up lines were showing and many important details from the book were left out. Bella is supposed to be smitten with Edward, not skeptically grimacing at him with her mouth hanging open all the time. If you were to cut out the sound and just see the way she looks at him, she looks utterly disgusted by him! Kristin was most certainly not the right actress for this part. Robert did a little better, but should try not to look like he wants to eat her arms all the time. The actors in the movie weren't even CLOSE to being as gorgeous as the book portrays. I have read that Kristin will play Bella again in the next movie. I won't even have to see it to know that she will again be dry, sarcastic and rude. Utterly disappointed in this movie... It should have been left alone as a book so the misplaced actors and actresses couldn't butcher it.

Josh Sat, Mar 21, 2009 at 12:43 PM EST

This Movie falls short in so many ways.. The bad acting in parts is really hard to stomach. I am a huge fan of the books which are some of the best work ive read. I am not sure what they were thinking when they made this film but it was not a true attempt at making the book into a movie. I rate this movie with the likes of Eragon.. Another tale of Hollywood being clueless to what the story was really about and instead focusing on pushing out a film that they can make a quick buck on.. If they weren't going to make it right they should not have made it at all.. I will probably have to wait over 10 years for any hope of a remake..

I really loved all four books. When I went to see the movie , I was dissapointed , because actress who played Bella was really horrible ( no emotions shown really). It seemed like she was "barking" her lines at Robert Pattinson , who played Edward ( and who was great playing his role ).I absolutly agree with so many other comments here , such as , Rosalie should be played by somebody else. Jacob should be also replaced for somebody who is taller , bigger ( as described in book 2 )He was good though for part 1.I am really looking forward to next movie , made by new ( much better ) , I hope ,director.Stephanie M. did a wonderful job writing those books. Hope, from now on the other movies will be great as well and not choppy.LK
