Ratings: 'Grey's Anatomy' scores its biggest audience in weeks

Greysanatomy2_l_2 CBS' CSI is still the No. 1 show on Thursday, but ABC has something to smile about: Last night, Grey's Anatomy scored its biggest audience since its season premiere, according to overnight data. The Ghost of Denny helped the drama nab 15.7 million viewers (up 6 percent from last week). Meanwhile, the Alphabet's Ugly Betty, second place in the 8 p.m. hour, held steady with its 8.3 million viewers. And Life on Mars...okay, it finished third in its 10 p.m. time slot with 8 million viewers and lost nearly half of its Grey's audience, but its fan base was also steady week-to-week. (Spin, baby, spin.)

Like CSI, whose 18.4 million viewers was down from last week's 19 million, the rest of CBS' lineup also saw a dip. Survivor: Gabon's was slight: Its 12.6 mil was down 2 percent from its last episode (though the reality show still took the 8 p.m. title by more than 4 million pairs of eyes). Freshman drama Eleventh Hour claimed the 10 p.m. crown with 10.7 million viewers, but it was down 8 percent week-to-week.

As for NBC, ER remained its top-rated Thursday show with 9.1 million viewers -- good enough for second place in the 10 p.m. slot -- but that was down 8 percent from last week's Anthony-Edwards-returns! episode. The remainder of the Peacock's night was a bit like a seesaw: My Name Is Earl went down (6.8 mil at 8 p.m.), Kath & Kim (5.5 mil at 8:30 p.m.) and The Office (8.4 mil at 9 p.m) went up, and 30 Rock went down (7.3 mil at 9:30 p.m.).

Over at Fox, the two-hour Kitchen Nightmares block was cookin' -- on low heat. Its 8 p.m. hour (4.7 mil) was status quo with last week's, but its 9 p.m. hour (4.2 mil) cooled off by about 14 percent in comparison.

Finally, we get to The CW, which, if these preliminary numbers hold up, scored nicely with Smallville (4.8 mil) and Supernatural (4 mil). We use the caveat because last week's fast ratings, 4.4 mil and 3.9 mil, dropped to 3.6 mil and 2.9 mil, respectively, when Nielsen released its final numbers.

WRONGDA RHIMES SHOULD BE GRATEFUL TO MERDER FANS. WE ARE SO IDIOTS TO WATCH THIS CRAP ONLY FOR 30 SECONDS OF THEM.. POMPEO/DEMPSEY, WE LOVE YOU, BUT WE DESERVE RESPECT FROM THAT IDIOT OF WRONGDA RHIMES.

ELIZABETH Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 11:44 AM EST

Grey's Anatomy is a great show, but Please PLEASE get rid of Denny! He's not cute or sexy, just stupid. He stops the momentum of the show.
Thanks, Elizabeth

Love the Yang/Hunt match-up; it's truly amazing. I'm excited now on how this will progress. Love his character and Yang has been my favorite, so I'm back to watching GA!

doodie8806 Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

Smallville and Supernatural were awesome! The chermisty between Clois was amazing!Everybody did good! I know that they bought Lana back but why!? This episode would have still been good without her, better in my opinion! She took up to much screen time with the angest drama and there is just no spark between her and Clark, not that i thought there ever was! I think people tuned in for Doomsday! He was awesome! They tried to turn her into ninja girl with a backbone(PLEASE,ROLLING EYES)but she still seemed whiney and fake as ever!

PJ Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

ok...why are we making the Katherine Heigel screen time even worse by having her haunted by that moron actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan? Is he sleeping with Shonda Rhimes? I mean, who over there at Grey's Anatomy likes him?

joe Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

The reason it did so well is because it dropped the lesbian story lines...

I hate the Denny-Izzie tale, Haven't we had enough of it already? Denny's dead! izzy should just get over hm and move on with Alex - he's hotter :P

OMG... Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 07:18 PM EST

Wow, good to know that Grey's COMPLETELY sold out for ratings.

How the hell does this beat Supernatural from week to week? At least that show is supposed to have ghosts and stuff...

sylvie Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 07:06 PM EST

Here's a suggestion that my friends, workmates and I are doing--TIVO the show and fast-forward through all the Denny scenes... voila!

janine Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

I LOVE DENNY!!!! Thats really all I can say you cannot get rid of him ever again!

timera Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST

The Denny-ghost/Izzie love-story is the ONLY reason I resumed watching Grey's Anatomy! I LOVE that story line and can't wait for Thurs nites to relax and see what happens next! Thank you ABC!

this show is awesome Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

Best season ever! Keep it up! You people who don't like it, go watch Dancing with the Stars. That's more your speed.

this show sucks Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

Fecal transplants? Unsupervised surgeries? Who writes this crap?

once a fan Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

This show needs new writers STAT. It sucks and is now totally unwatchable.

Ha Ha Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 06:15 AM EST

I'm cracking up. They think the ghost of Denny is why the ratings are up? Hilarious! I tune in every week waiting for them to get rid of Izzie. The ghost of Denny.....still LOL-ing about that one

Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 03:10 AM EST

Right, and they'll keep around Kitchen Nightmares and not Pushing Daisies. TV astounds me.

George Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 02:39 AM EST

What about all the recent media coverage regarding Brooke Smith's departure? I know it happened a while ago, but it could have renewed interest in the show. Then again, I hated (and still hate) Denny, so looking to give the credit to *anything* else lol

Casey Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 01:21 AM EST

lol the Ghost of Denny...methinks the millions tuning in for the Lost promos helped.

Jami0624 Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 12:43 AM EST

People! The Denny Ghost is not what made this episode one of the highest ratings since the premier- It was Cristina and Owen!!! The chemistry is absolutely amazing- they are the talk of the net!! Your tube is getting record hits on all of their scenes, especially the kissing scenes and the "I Think Your Beautiful" statement this week-Wow!! Great acting- Denny-move on to heaven and leave Izzy alone!!!

Melv Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 10:55 PM EST

Personally, I think its time Derek shocked Meridth into reality, who in the right mind who get in bed with Christina and forget what is next to her. As far as Denny, real shame they killed him off. Of course the writers could do what they did in Dallas and just pretend it never happened and Izzie has been in a hospital and she wkes up..you get the idea. hell good writing is what keeps us watching.

Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 08:50 PM EST

Thank you for Denny...I love him!!!!!

Mar Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

The only reason this show is still getting any decent ratings is because the MERDER fans will watch the entire show just to see 30 seconds of sweetness between them.

It is pathetic that a few minutes of adult scenes between the lead couple will keep the audience watching this train wreck. ABC and Shonda should be bowing before the golden couple. I hope they start having actual story lines that make sense and are realistic (and more than a minute in a 45 minute show)...unless Derek starts haunting Meredith...since that seems to be going over SO well for Dizzie. YUCK to everything on Greys but PD and EP. They deserve so much better than the writers give them.

CandyMaize Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 08:00 PM EST

I know that last Thursday's CW numbers were off because the NY market was pre-empted for football. And this week, it is the Pittsburgh market that showed football. I don't think the final numbers (after removing the Pittsburgh market) will drop as much this week as they did last week.

Joy Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

If you don't like the Denny plot line than don't watch the show. It's as simple as that and then you won't have to complain what they are doing. Obviously there are a great deal of people that are enjoying the storylines on grey's. It must not be that bad if your complaining but still watching...

Kristen Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

As both an avid Grey's watcher and a newly addicted 30 Rock watcher. I'd choose 30 Rock anyday; and I'm really hoping other Grey's watchers jump on the 30 Rock bandwagon too. The fact that 30 Rock's ratings are dropping lower and lower every week worries me..

Caroline Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

I agree that the train wreck effect is happening here. We'll see at the end of the season whether or not people are willing to put up with this terrible storytelling for a prolonged period of time. I remember that when they 1st went head to head Grey's was beating CSI, no more and two weeks ago for sure and I think last week too (not totally sure) Grey's was 7th for the week and getting beat by Desperate Housewives. Its good for them that they made up some of their losses, but they are still down overall.

Greysfan04 Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

People, calm down. Grey's Anatomy is still one of the greatest shows on earth. While other shows are dipping in ratings, Greys is going up. Obviously, people like the Denny storyline, especially since season 2 was the best season on Greys. Just give Shondra a chance to tell the story and then judge afterwards.

sam Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

I really enjoy Grey's as one of my guilty pleasures, but the dead Denny plot is icky beyond words. I don't even like to think about those scenes. I like the actor, but couldn't they have brought him back some other way? Even the dumb "twin" plot would have been less disgusting that what is going on now.

probie123 Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

This HAS to be a train wreck effect. There is no way people are watching this for quality. I'll admit I watched it JUST because I wanted to see how she was going to pull off doing the nasty with the ghost. The previews teased us because all we got were sound effects. If ABC was reading the blogs and ignoring the ratings, they would see what a disaster this really is. I hope the powers of be realize that this won't last!!! It truly is a train wreck/car wreck effect - people will stop and look even though they don't want to see. People are watching this show to see if it could get any worse - c'mon interns cutting on each other - ghosts making love. Hopefully, it won't last and it will be good news for 30 Rock who truly deserves it - last night's episode was a hoot. I'm begging ew readers to take a stand and not watch it next week. I did not read ONE positive comment.

T.T Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

wow glad to see people tuned in to watch kristen kruek return to smallville :D

wojo Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

There's a reason CSI is number one in the ratings. Its the best show on TV! Let's deal with reality, not this silly ghost crap.

Dee Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

I'll keep watching the world's number one and most watched show...aka CSI.

Gretchen Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

Ugh, just what we need - ABC peeps thinking this Dead Denny story line is a good thing! Boo on the ratings....
