Box Office Report: 'Twilight' sinks its teeth into a blockbuster debut

Nov 23, 2008, 01:38 PM | by Joshua Rich

Categories: Box Office

Twilightforbo2_l Twilight, director Catherine Hardwicke's adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's vampire-romance novel, easily won the weekend box office with a $70.6 mil debut gross, according to Sunday's estimates. Fellow freshman flick Bolt and hefty holdover Quantum of Solace, meanwhile, trailed far behind.

That huge premiere number represents achievements on many levels for Twilight. It's the top debut ever for a film directed by one woman (Mimi Leder's Deep Impact banked $41.2 mil on its initial weekend 10 years ago). It's the 29th best first-weekend bow of all time (falling just shy of 300's $70.9 mil and coming in just ahead of Transformers' $70.5 mil). It's by far the biggest opening yet for fledgling studio Summit, whose previous best bow was Never Back Down's $8.6 mil back in March. It stands as the fourth biggest premiere of the year -- better than Quantum of Solace's $67.5 mil opening, better than WALL-E's $63.1 mil, better than Hancock's $62.6 mil, to name a few. Last, but almost certainly not least, it's nearly exactly what I predicted (hooray, me!).

So it's no surprise that the studio already announced a sequel, New Moon. But the question for now, of course, is where Twilight, which averaged a bloody good $20,636 in 3,419 theaters, goes from here? Not surprisingly, girls and women comprised a whopping 75 percent of the film's audience, but will they continue to pack theaters as the weeks go on? In the short term: yes. According to studio data, ticket buyers gave the movie a nice A- grade, signaling the spread of positive word of mouth as we head into Thanksgiving. Certainly, there will be some competition for this core crowd from Australia and Four Christmases next week, but you can also assume that Twilight will be able to build on its super-smashing start.

Second place went to Quantum of Solace, which banked $27.4 mil (again, almost exactly as I predicted). That's a big 59 percent drop from the James Bond flick's big bow last time around. On the bright side, the Daniel Craig movie became the year's 20th release to cross the $100 mil mark domestically. It has a 10-day sum of $109.5 mil in the U.S. and Canada, and it has brought in some $418 mil worldwide to date.

Next up: Bolt (No. 3), which underperformed perhaps ever so slightly with $27 mil (way below my prognostication, alas). Nonetheless, that's a good number for a non-Pixar animated movie that could have gotten swallowed up by stiff competition. And unlike Twilight, Bolt has no natural rivals at the box office in the near future. Combine that fact with the A- CinemaScore review it drew from a "four quadrant" crowd filled with people of all ages and genders, and its financial future looks secure.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (No. 4 with $16 mil) and Role Models (No. 5 with $7.2 mil) rounded out a stellar top five. And for the third straight weekend, the multiplex housed a $60 mil-plus grosser, the first time that's ever happened outside of summer.

Thus, the overall box office got a nice 2 percent bump over the same frame a year ago (when Enchanted and This Christmas led the way). All of which portends nice things to come as the most wonderful time of the year gets underway.

Also because 'Twighlight' was absolutely superb!!!!

Shannen Ferraz Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 05:42 AM EST

i hope i speak for the fans of twighlight when i say go ahead with all the sequels. i have read all the twighlight books n its brought the new hope of happiness in my life. I would love to encourage you to create the sequels because its related to me in so many ways in the love story. i felt the way Bella felt about Edward AND Jacob towards others in my life. If you're worried about capturing the true emotion of the actions of the teenage girl thing...even though the phrase "in your dreams" may be said...i would still volunteer to give a few pointers if that helps in any way just to get you to do the sequels. As i am a teenage girl. Pleaseeee!!! from all the biggest fans...Im begging you guys go through with this.
Yours truly!
Shannen Ferraz

Megan Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 08:56 PM EST

I read Twilight before I saw the movie, then went to the movie the following night and LOVED it. Now that I've read the 3 other books, I cannot wait to see them adapted into films, as well.

And I agree with the poster/s who have already stated that some of the criticism has to be coming from people who haven't read the books (at least the first one). If that's the case, they won't understand the full impact of some of the scenes in the movie & what they mean for the characters (ex: Edward playing piano-the song was written by him for Bella), etc.

Also like it has been stated, given the small budget, the special effects were honestly not bad. I really enjoyed how the movie was shot, overall; the angles/the use of music all worked for me.

Lastly, I absolutely adored the cast (and actually went into the movie dreading Stewart's performance), but she won me over! And of course, Rob is amazing; he's the perfect Edward. Taylor is also the perfect Jacob ; )

sarahanne Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 08:54 PM EST

omg i realy like twilight the amizing books and the realy hot movie. stephenie meyer is an amizing writer. she is so creative. also robert pattinson is the best person to play edward cullen and kristen swert is an amizing bell

Ashleigh *Twinerd!* Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

Well overall we all have our ideas and we are all going to go see New Moon. But unfortonatlly people we have to wait untill 2010 OMG thats along time. I Personally give the move an A. I also agree with TwilightFan.
:D

Deb Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

I took my daughter to see the movie..... and oh my gosh- i fell in love with the movie and the books.
Great movie looking forward to next installment of the movie saga. I am more hooked on the movies than my daughter is --if that is possible.

mrs.cullen Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 10:50 PM EST

OME!!!I WENT TO WATCH THE MOVIE LIKE 27 TIMES!!!YAY!!!IM SO GONNA WATCH IT AGAIN!!!!

crystal Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

i LOVEEE the movie, and bella is a good actor, and even edward , he's FUCKENNN hott!!!! lol :)
i cant wait till the 2 movie comes outt!!!

Becca Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

Twilight Fan I agree with you too. The first time I saw the movie I felt short changed with the build up of Bella's and Edwards romance. Picked apart the movie the whole time and left feeling dissapointed. I went again this weekend with friends who haven't seen it yet and I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. I was able to watch it without comparing it to the book. Kristens and Robs chemistry was great. Rob was Edward, though he does need to work on some of his facial expressions as does Kristens stuttering. Though both of those I blame on the director. I hope New Moon will have a bigger budget and is done right. I also think both Rob and Kristen will feel more comfortable in their roles. Those two had a lot of pressure on them playing characters that people already perfected in their minds. So well done, to both of them.

Natasha Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:11 AM EST

"Twilight fan" I completely agree with you.

Twilight Fan Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 11:04 PM EST

When I first saw the movie, I was disappointed. I read the series 3 times through and I'm a huge fan. I wanted the movie to be exactly like the book. I sat through the movie the first time and I could only compare and contrast the two the whole time. I went again today and I saw the whole movie differently. I allowed myself to just watch the movie as if I had never heard of "Twilight" before. I was able to separate the book from the movie. And the movie is awesome. Knowing the book gave me insight on the characters and the love they share. Movies are never the same as the book. So if you've read the book a lot...give yourself the right to just enjoy the movie as it is, and do not expect it to be the book "animated". Now I want to see it again, and I can't wait for the "New Moon" movie!

nicolle Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

twilight is an awesome movie and all of u ppl who say u r dissapointed just cuz it didnt exactly follow the book r crazy. it got the major points of the book incorperated into it there is no way to fit everything in the book into a 2 hr movie so just stop complaining. i m gonna go see it again this weekend and the first time i saw it i made my mom drive through a mini snowstorm and it was so worth it!!!!

Rachael Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

I went to the midnight showing of TWILIGHT and I have to say.
I was VERY disappointed.
I know you can't put a 500 page book into a 2 hour movie but god, everything was so backwards.
Changing the Meadow scene (chapter 13: Confessions)
was so bad.
In my opinion its the most important part out of the whole book.
And as for the actors.
Kristen Stewart I'm not a fan of her and I don't
think she should have played Bella.
They should have chosen someone else for that.
And I didn't feel or see any love and romance between Bella and Edward.
Made me sad and disappointed.
I hope the 2nd one isn't as disappointing as the first one.
Harry Potter wasn't even as bad as TWILIGHT.
They changed the movie WAY to much.
You can change a bit but everything was all wrong.
I've read TWILIGHT 17 times so if you've read the book a lot I'm sure you noticed.

meredith Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 08:40 PM EST

Wow, Kristen Stewart is BRILLIANT! I loved the ending of the movie with the Iron and Wine song that she chose. I'm going to go and get the Twilight soundtrack now...! BTW, I could really see her as being in love with Edward in the end. The actors are both so young - it's tough to look like you're IN LOVE - Kristen Stewart got it though! I just hope she handles the fame part of her job okay and doesn't let the pressures and ups and downs of fame get to her :(

Rachel Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 03:36 AM EST

I loved the movie. I watched it three times in theater. I'll watch again the fourth time next Saturday. The movie covers all important parts that have to be shows in the movie. Although, the romance between Edward and Bella wasn't too much but I could understand. Because there is not so much time to fit all in 2 hours. Every crew that involved in the making of Twilight are doing a good job in fitting all good parts from the book! EXCELLENT WORK!!!

Butter33 Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 07:53 PM EST

I personally loved the movie. I do agree that there was a lot of stuff left out. But, what do you expect? You can't fit a 500 page book into a two-hour movie.

Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

i want rob pattinson so badly!!!

alexis_23 Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

no question, this film is way way betta than that HARRY POTTER flicks......im roothing for it definitely!

pat-love Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

man! the moment i saw this guy robert pattinson I was totally over him...i mean he is so "hot" and "handsome"...HE IS DEFINITELY GOING TO OVERCOME THE "POTTER MANIA" SOONER OR LATER......or has he already??!!

Kaity Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST

Whatever some of you have some issues Harry Potter was good i agree but i never had dreams about Harry .NEWSFLASH!!!! People dream about these books every teenage girl wants a edward cullen in some piont really its amazing the way he protects her i saw the movie but really i saw harry potter and watched the movie twilight blows the socks maybe not money wise but in the way it captures me and pulls you in and you will always want more. Another NEWSFLASH !!! The most grossing was a romantic novel {Titanic} not a killing/wizard world. So back off. And to all you TWILIGHT fans Rock on =D

Ethea Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

Seriously, people, what did you expect Twilight to be? Beating Harry Potter? A word of advice, Twilight is never gonna beat Harry Potter but it stands out on its own. So please watch the movie before you comment and don't be angry because the script was changed and Edward didn't sparkle more.

artemis Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

Wow, lots of negative comments... I feel like I have to comment just to balance things out a little. Personally I really liked the movie. No it wasn't a perfect adaptation, and they left out some stuff that I would have like to have seen, but on the whole I liked it. I saw it twice, which made a difference. The first time there was lots of nervous/excited giggles from the audience in all the wrong places, the second time, they were (mostly) better behaved. And Rob? he was great! and I liked Kristen too.

Armish Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 04:04 PM EST

All dose ppl who said dat dey didnt lyk da movie.PuhLEASE go seee a movie which is not based on a book n has all dose cheerleadrers, action figures n macho men. dose who lyked da movie r da real twilighters n i am among dem. so plz stop sayin u were disappointed. LUV TWILIGHT N SHALL ALWAYS!!!

manoora Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 05:43 AM EST

oh my god guys what the hell is wrong with you. what did you expect the movie was good really good ok i agree that there were important things that was not included and the script was totaly different and it was not even close but still it was amazing you i saw the movie once and i will see it again and again and agian an i will never get bored cause it is twilight the best movie ever so plz stop telling everybody that you are disapointed plz cause every movie is not the exactly like the book and the books are always better but i think that the actors and the producer did a really good job, so guy you really should be ashamed of your selfs cause they did their best.... i love the movie

Pamela Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 10:54 PM EST

I am not a critic
therefore I am a fan....
and I LOVED THE MOVIE!
The Twilight dvd will be mine!!!!!!

Mira Bella Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 10:42 PM EST

I loved it and will be seeing it again. The only thing I was disappointed in was that the movie didn't follow the book's meadow scene and that Edward didn't sparkler more. Loved the action and loved that Edward gave Bella a wonderful experience in seeing Forks from the tip-top of trees - - very romantic.

Kelly Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 09:37 PM EST

I loved all of the books but was very dissapionted in the movie. It came off as unintentionally funny.

Jules Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 08:29 PM EST

I thought this movie was terrible....and I loved the books. The worst part is the hints they gave us for the next movie doesn't give me much hope. Do you really think wolves like the ones they showed in the film could kill a vampire? Sorry, but dogs aren't going to cut it. For a film that is trying to appeal to the female masses, having male characters with bad make-up and horrible acting certainly isn't going to attract repeat customers. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they can redeem this series in the next movie....but honestly the second book is the worst of the four...I can't imagine it's going to be any better than the first (although I find it hard to believe that it could actually be worse).

mlj1225 Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 08:17 PM EST

Loved it! And I am seeing it again this weekend, probably a 3rd time too...I think ticket sales will be pretty good this coming weekend as well.

Shawneya Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

Simply delighted. I am in love with this movie. I know that some of the lines were hammed up but I didn't care. To have a love like that, uhhhh swoon. I wish the movie was longer. There were things left out but that goes without saying when bringing a book to the big screen. I just wish Jasper had more to say.... But I cant wait until New Moon comes out. I hope they stay true to the book though. New Moon was my favorite!

Takiya Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

Cheer up guys!!!!

Twilight is redeemable... There are three more movies to be made.

Has anyone possibly considered that, the things that may have been missing from the first film can creep into the next.

We have to keep in mind that this is a movie. With books, I don't writers intentionally go into the writing process saying that this should be turned into a movie.
Things like Carlisle history can easily be weaved into the next movie or even eclipse.
People have to be conscious that this was a book adaptation; for those who may have not even heard of the books and see the film, may slightly be intrigued by what the book is like and purchase it. That's money made for SM.
For those who, like myself, have read the book, the words have now been turned visual, offering us what our imagination had conjured about what the characters were like.
It paints a picture of some sort. For right now, after seeing that movie, the picture is a bit blurry, but through helpful critic, it will be great.

melissa Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

Twilight is better the second time. Trust me I am a big fan of the books.....

Stephenie you really need to finish MIDNIGHT SUN....

Maria Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

i would have to agree with "Twilight Simply Awful" as much as i love the twilight series (i own all the books and i've read them each a couple times) i was disappointed in the movie, i felt like it was lacking a lot of acting skills, especially bella and edward, the movie just seemed really.... awkward, which made sense for the beginning of the movie but towards the end, i was expecting the awkwardness between them to die down, and was disappointed to see that it didn't. the second time i watched the movie i enjoyed it a bit more, but i guess it's because i had low expectations. i still love the twilight series, and i know i'll watch new moon on opening night. if summit changed the director for the next 3 (maybe 4) movies i am sure we will see some improvement. hmmm...

Agreement Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

totally agree with
"Random Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST"
some of the crap they wasted time on could have been left out and made room for more important stuff...was it really necassary to show Billy trying to hit Charlie's ankles with his wheelchair?
I agree, Stephenie owes us "Midnight Sun" now.

40-yr-old Twilight fan Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

VERY disappointed! I had such high hopes for it. LOVE the books. That wont change. Maybe 'Full Moon' will be better with more $ to throw at it, but does that mean they will go back and remake "Twilight"? There were so many lines, comments and DETAILS that were left out.Unless you read the book, I felt like you were left out. Carlisle's makeup in the hospital looked HIDEOUS! You could see the flakes of white on his face. Very poor. Edward's room was totally wrong, one of the cutest parts of the book was them wrestling in Edward's room, Alice coming in to ask if she and Jasper could play too, then they talk about going to play baseball. In the movie, all the sudden, they were going to play. Just weird. It didnt flow at all. All it would have taken to flow more was conversation, no big set, just words. And the part where she throws down her packback and walks in the woods and he follows. Stupid. Not Bella at all. Very poor. I will see it again, I hope its better if I sit back further.

Twilight Simply Awful Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

Simply Awful is the only way to describe the movie. The directing was week. The editing was choppy. The script didn't flow well. The special effects were cheesy. The score was lame and made no sense. A low budget movie doesn't have to suffer quality wise.

BC Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

...but seriously, how much did the studio pay Entertainment Weekly to verbally fellate Twilight? The amount of coverage is ridiculous.

Carolyn Hieb Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

LOVED IT!!! Twilight was a great first run at a beautiful and edgy story. Rob and Kristin are Edward and Bella. The script needed more of their intimate talks, handholding and a little less running, but overall, beautiful imagery, fantastic casting and two actors in a story we can't wait to see more of!!!! PLEASE SUMMIT - MAKE ALL FOUR!!!!!!

Elodi Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

I'm a huge fan of the Twilight book series, but as for the movie... I walked out of the theater extremely disappointed. I agree with one of the earlier comments; it was one of the most unintentionally funny movies I've ever seen. I don't think you can really understand the depth and emotion that is a HUGE factor in this series with the movie. It's like they talk a couple times and then all of a sudden Edward is Bella's stalker. And what was up with Bella twitching her head all the time?! And the field scene!! The whole book was based off of that one freaking scene, and they killed it. And the scene when he tells her he's a vampire, I'd say that was the worst part.
Please people, if you see the movie and haven't read the books read them. The movie is a stupid joke compared to them.
As for the people who say that those with a negative opinion of the movie shouldn't comment, well, we have a right to our views. So shut up, kkthx. Maybe we understand the series better than you.

Lori Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 09:26 AM EST

I only agree with Blah on one point, Rob should have been allowed to use his own voice/accent. It would have been more accurate to the time of his humanity and welth. I found that when I read the books, (in my head) there was actually a British accent. It was more musical and romantic that way.

Kristy Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 02:56 AM EST

I read all 4 books within one week and I was counting the days until the movie came out:) I thought the movie was PERFECT and was sad when it ended because it was magical!!! I will go see it many times, I'm sure, and I will buy it when it comes out on video It will become one of those movies I can't get enough of:)

Sophia Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 12:30 AM EST

I'm a big fan of the Twilight series. As the movie release came closer my excitement grew though I kept my expectations low because I knew that the budget was small and movie adaptations rarely live up to the hype. I fully expected deviations from the details in the book, and I am not hypercritical of movies. That said, I thought Twilight was simply awful. The low-budget effects I could forgive. But the terrible acting, directing, makeup, and writing was too much to bear. It was laughable really. (Hang on, spidermonkey. Seriously?) Because of my love for the books I hope the sequel is better. I also think my opinion of the movie is just as valid as that of those who liked it. To each his own. I just happened to think that it was one of the most unintentionally funny movies I have ever seen. I have a friend who wants to see it, so I'll probably see it again. I'm honestly hopeful that it is not as bad the second time around.

Faithstars Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 10:10 PM EST

Wow, some people can be beyond cruel. If you did not like this movie, that's ok. It is your right not to do so. However, please don't resort to a third graders mentality by name calling.

I understand and respect that what you enjoy may not be what I enjoy. Why is it that some of you feel the need to say cruel and inhumane things to those of us who found value in it.

Yes, the movie was not perfect and I wish a few things had been different. However, I thought it followed closely enough to the book that I enjoyed it. I went in knowing that the budget was smaller, therefor it would not have all the fancy footwork. While I thought the acting in the first 20 minutes was, at times, akward....I thought the movie really pulled itself together and I thought it was an unperfect but Lovely adaptation.

By the Way, Stephanie signed off on this movie and she is the creator of the fantasy. I saw this movie twice and it was money well spent, in my opinion.

BRADD BRADD,

As for all your stats on Harry Potter 4, why dont you compare Harry Potter 1's opening night to Twilights opening night, because I guarantee when Breaking Dawn comes out if it ever does it will be right up thier with Harry Potter 4.

Shanati Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

WOW,
If you dont like the movie then why are you even commenting on here. Get a life! For everyone that does like the movie I understand why you would look this up online and comment. However if you didnt like it then go make comment about a movie you did like how about. Secondly if you watched the movie and have never read the books your comment doesnt count. You cant be a Twilight lover if you never read the books. People are stupid.

Michele Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

I have talked up Twilight, the whole series, and have several people at work reading, or have read it and its sequels. A few non-readers have gone to see the movie after hearing some of us readers discuss the books and I've heard nothing but admiration for the books and the movie, from even some that I thought were pretty skeptic. I adored the Twilight series and will continue to suck people in if I can. I haven't gotten to see the movie yet but I seriously cannot wait!! People I know have loved the movie and some were pleasantly surprised at the romance aspect :) Yay! Stephenie is an amazing writer!

Dustin Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

I guess I'm part of the other 25% (which was obvious both times I stepped into the theater). I thought it was a great adaptation, even though I noticed several differences from the novel (I thought the modern house was a great idea, I mean they have fabulous cars, obviously they adapt to the times and take full advantage of the wealth given them through centuries of life experience...)

I'm really glad the film had such a low budget. Honestly, I was concerned when I heard all the reviews calling the effects "cheesy". They weren't... They just weren't what most people are used to. Flashy effects would take away from the essence of the story. Some parts could have used some more funding, but really, did you expect that from newcomer Summit?

Less ranting, more appreciation. =D

Nicole Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 04:21 PM EST

I agree. This movie has received a lot of criticism, but for people who enjoyed the book, and understand the themes that develop in this and later books in the series, this movie is a hit! I really enjoyed it, and have seen it twice since it opened, once with my husband who was unfamiliar with the story but enjoyed it, and once with my family who have read the entire series, and actually liked the movie better than the book (because of the much needed inclusion of humor and massive editing of 200 pages of "Edward is perfect and sparkly and did I mention perfect with perfect teeth and perfect hair? And he sparkles.").

Noneya Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

Jesus mary and unholy joseph. This is a new low for effeminizing a horrifying creature of the night! Do you know what the sun does to these guys? It makes them glitter. That makes Armand look straight.

Rhenea Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

I think people continue to look to find things wrong with this movie. As we are all fully aware now, bad news sells. It's a lot easier to be critical than be nice. It makes us feel "bigger". I was guilty of this last Friday at Midnight...I was SCARED TO DEATH this movie would be awful. I loved the books and I'm a huge RPattinson (How to Be...brilliant) so I was terrified for him and the rest of the cast. EVERYONE needs to keep in mind that this movie was shot and finished long before the hype got out of hand. It's not high dollar but it's charming and wonderful and true to the story. The visuals are stunning and the acting is spot-on. See it for what it is...refreshing, not perfect and not slick. In other words "REAL"...just like the rest of us. Summit will throw $$ at New Moon, they'll know what they're up against this time around and I CAN'T WAIT!!!

BTW..."Demo" people. I'm 37, my husband 38...we both loved it and I'm far from a tween and I'm not a mom.

tammy Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

I enjoyed the movie a lot. I read the book, and am glad I did because it seems like the movie lacked character development - but what can you do in 2 hours with a book that full of story anyway! I think that the theaters will remain busy with middle-aged moms like me sneaking back again and again to watch it while the squealing teenage girls are in school. I sure hope they are racing to make the other movies quickly, because unlike vampires, it may be tough to keep the human actors from aging...

Samantha Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

I am a huge Twilight fan. I have read all four of the books twice. I saw the movie opening night and was really disappointed. I feel that maybe it was that my expectation of the movie was a bit high. Also, there were so many people that it was hard to focus on the chemistry between the two actors. I left the theatre feeling that it could have been so much better. One of my biggest criticisms is the screenplay. I felt that it was a big mistake the way they handled the meadow scene. The screenwriter needs to use more of what is given in the book. I realize that it cannot be exact but certain scenes should not have been excluded.

Then I decided that I would see it again. What a difference. I really enjoyed it the second time. I mean it is not as good as the book but it is still pretty enjoyable. I feel that now that they have decided to make New Moon they should put some real money towards the production. That story is much more complex that will requir more sophisticated direction. I

lily Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

lol. It is a low budget movie. It's far from perfect, but I think they did it justice. New Moon will be Summits number one investment, and it will be WAY better than Twilight. All you guys think that our fanbase as women can't take on your stupid James Bond movies, well we proved you wrong. Catherine Hardwick broke records for a woman director. With 75% of a female audience. We kicked your asses and you can't admit it. But I guess it doesn't really MATTER because it's just a bunch of teenagers who don't know ANYTHING... lol. Next step: tear it down, right? If you think all these fans arent going to see it durning Thanksgiving weekend, you don't know us very well. These movies are going to be huge... get used to it. =]

In love with the romance Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

It took only two days to get through each novel. The thirst was more than I could bare as I found myself running to Barnes & Noble one night needing my fix. Again I find myself thirsty for more after seeing Twilight in its opening day. The chemistry was undeniable between Pattinson and Stewart. My only disappointment was that we didn't get more screen time between the two. That is so pivotal in the book. Unfamiliar with Pattinson, he was convincingly charming and I think overall the movie was a hit. As a die hard Anne Rice fan- I am so happy to have a new vampire romance to fill my thoughts LOL Stephanie Meyer is unquestionably good at what she does. You go girl!!! I may be 30 but damn do I feel 17 again! Can I get three more hours of Bella and Edward falling in love please - the torture of wanting, waiting, not being able to have, the morality to do what's right, to know where to draw the line, and at the end of the day don't we all just want to be loved unconditionally?

candance Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

I love the movie it was great i just want to say that i can watch it over and over i like the parts were it was funny ....

lorena Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

Blah I give it a 0 Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 02:40 PM EST

This movie was horrible. This is the first movie in the last ten years or so that I wanted to walk out of. The acting was horrible from kristen, just terrible. She over did and under did so many of her lines. I would like to add though that I didnt approve of who they picked to play bella and edward from the begining but I gave it a chance anyway. I think they were pretty spot on with picking the cullens, 'specially Alice I think was perfect and maybe carlisle. It was dreadful having to watch rob stuggle to keep his accent under control, there were times when he had to spit out only one word lines and it just sounded horrible. They should have just let him talk normally and it would have probably sounded much better. Also the way it was filmed was very sloppy and lazy, tons of face close ups to make up for the lack artistic-ness. There was no connecting feeling between this movie and the books at all. If it was so low budget then they shouldnt have made it. Trying to make a quick buck.

Maya Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

Before I start, I am a teenage girl and I know the film was basically marketed to people like me. I have read all of the books, I got Twilight back in 2005 when I was 12 and nobody really knew what it was, and I happen to really like the first three.
Now, the production team didn't have an amazing amount of funds and had to squish a 400 plus book into two hours. With that in mind I say this movie did a great job with what they had. I was actually suprised at how well it was. And if I imagined something another way (the ballet studio, etc.) it turned out even better in the movie and even though it took some getting used to Hardwicke's sort of art/indie film take on the direction, it actually turned out really well. The effects were ok and the actors managed to get thier charcters down.
Everyone has different tastes, but if you read Twilight and liked it or you're into romance stories with a twist then I highly suggest seeing this movie.
I give it a B. ^_^

Courtney Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

I think people seriously need to get their sticks out of their asses. It was just a movie!!! True, it could have been way better, and I would have loved to see better dialogue describing the epic EdwardBella love (just, face it, the 5% of Team Failcobers out there...this is an EDWARDBELLA love story), but the acting was amazing. Robert and Kristen were awesome.
Personally I don't really care if New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn are made. Twilight was the only one worth rereading. Maybe if they get a better writer who understands the characters' feelings better, then okay.

jessicuhhhh Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

I, personally, highly enjoyed the movie. I read the book afterwards, and I might have liked it better if there wasn't sooooo much time spent telling how much Bella loved Edward. I got kind of sick of hearing over and over how god-like he was. But it was still simply AMAZING ;]

Mikey M Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

People that I know (all over the age of 20)disliked this movie because of the horrible dialogue and horrible Direction.
I will stay away.

Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

I'm with mostly everyone else... the movie was terrible. I'm a HUGE fan of the books, but the movie didn't come close. I expected the terrible special effects, and the swaying from the book a little, but the main focus of Twilight was how in love Bella and Edward were. She looked like she was petrified of him. I think the acting was the real problem... there have been a lot of movies with low budgets, that were amazing. This was just terrible.

vince Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

I hope EW is happy. With all of your ridiculous favoritism of the Twlight movie and series (what deal could you have signed that forced you guys to promote this film so much?, you were able to help propel the film to great success. Great work!

Sadly, by the time New Moon comes around, I might get so annoyed with the excessive advertising that I'll be forced to cancel my subscription.

Carrie F. Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 01:36 PM EST

HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!!!
I've seen better chemistry and acting in a Doritos commerical. Seriously kids... Summit better put more money into the next flicks.. better director, better effects, acting coach!
The only good thing about this movie is the screenplay follows the book closely.

Lori Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

I am a HUGE Twilight fan. Ive read all the books 4 times each in the last 3 weeks. I'm a mother of 5 young adults. I went to see Twilight with my daughter on friday and was not disapointed.... well maybe in the fact that it ended too soon. The core of the book was still there, the love, the need to protect her, the romance, being gentle.
You have to understand that these books/movies are to our youth not to the adults of this world, but the young. Getting a message accross to them of paitients, respect, abstinence "Opportunity Costs" "enjoy the bouquet of the wine without drinking it in". Doing things in there proper order, thinking of others first. All these things are a message to all of us. Thank you Stephenie

MJ Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

Should've been much longer. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but it was really weird in some parts, especially when Edward and Bella are suddenly in love after barely speaking. I liked it overall, but it could've been better.

Random Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Okay i am a HUGE twilight fan ive read the series, and fell in love. But after seeing the movie i am very disappointed. I really could not get into the movie at all.
-Bella was a terrible actor
-When Bella arrived at the school she wasnt surronded by students, and no one said anything smart about her vehicle
-Bella first meet Jacob Black in La Push
-Billy Black was not supposed to act hip or modern
-The cullens were not supposed to be friendly looking at lunch or all over each other
-Edward and Bella had just met and talked a couple times, and they were in love
-Edward was not eager to show Bella how he glissened in the sun
-The Cullens house was not Modern and new it was supposed to be antique looking
-Bella did not have a cell phone
-She did not google Quileutes Ledgens, she looked up vampires, on her old computer.
-She did not go to the book store and buy a book
Over all the actors were not believable WHAT SO EVER and the movie was a joke. Shoulda made it more then 2hr

Hahahahaha Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

$70 million!!!
Hahahahahaha. There sure are a lot of suckers out there, pun intended!

J Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST
