Adam Shankman talks 'Hairspray' sequel

Categories: Movie Biz

Poof up your pompadours and put on your dancing shoes: Last year’s musical hit Hairspray is one bop closer toward a sequel. “We just got an outline and some ideas from John Waters, and now we’re going out to writers,” director Adam Shankman tells EW exclusively. The story will follow Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) and her pals as they navigate the “next era of music,” the late ’60s. “That period was superpolitical,” Shankman adds, “it was a time of serious change.” No kidding: According to the filmmaker, heartthrob Link (Zac Efron) will channel his inner Austin Powers and become steeped in the British Invasion. “We’re trying to track, in a comedic way, the historical elements.”

Has any of these people like Efron signed on for this sequel?

  • graeme

I just hope that they get Michelle Pfeiffer back.

  • Moonllama

Why oh why do they need to sequelize everything that does halfway decent in the box office? I want more ORIGINAL movies! Use your brains, Hollywood!

  • kate

nooooooooo please Zac don’t do it! its career suicide! Hairspray 2 has failure written all over it please don’t do it!

  • Jess

OMG Im so excited for the sequel. I cant wait to hear more about it!!! I hope it is more centered on Link and Tracy but I do hope the entire original cast returns!

  • andreas

HS2 is going to be so great! It will be so cool to see Nikki as Tracy again. She is so talented, beautiful and a have a great personality.

  • Mel

Hmm this could be really funny. Adam is a genius, I bet it will be good.

  • Jennifer

I’m so excited for this!!! I can’t wait to see more of this story, these characters, and the cast! It sounds fantastic already!!!

  • John

HS did very well on the box office. With Adam, Nikki, Zac and the rest of the actors/crew HS2 will be fantastic. Sequals can work if it`s done right.

  • b

This sounds like such a bad idea. Travolta already said he wouldn’t come back. That’s a sign!!! Don’t do it.

This sounds like a really cool idea!!! Good move Zac!

  • Beth

That’s a totally unnecessary sequel – they should leave Hairspray alone. And this sounds bad and will likely bomb.
I hope the original cast members are smart enough to stay away!

  • kathy

zac efron channeling austin powers?? don’t do it zac. this has fail written all over it.

I hope this doesn’t happen. Sequels are everywhere, and really Zac, another musical? And one that sounds this unpromising? I think he has the potential to be so successful in this business, but he has to start showing more of his actual acting chops. Keeping my fingers crossed that this never comes to fruiton.

  • Monique

    Well this is just unfortunate.
Right when you think the Efron kid actually has a chance he decides to screw it all up with this.
They are goin to ruin the integrity of what Hairspray was about in the first place. Why do they have to make a sequal to everything? Fail.

  • C

Sequels are nearly always a mess up
    but i just know this one will 100% be;
    hairspray was all about that era of music;
    changing it won’t work.
I hope zac doesn’t do it, i love him & his career!

I hope you never run into Nikki in a dark alley because she might kick you in the bagina.

  • Florida Evans

The first one was lame, why even bother? They should just donate the money to people who need it instead of wasting it on this piece of s***. And please, no more of that Effron girl…enough with his gay ass already!

  • more

BORING…..Serious changes??? CHANGES are still happening….GAY MOVEMENT, Terrorism, America’s troubles at home, and the religious right AKA the new NAZIS

  • Cindy Lee

I am sure all the idiots so excited for HS2 are all teenagers or gay. HS1 was bad enough, I am sure that gay dude Zac is going to do sequels for the rest of his/her life. Wait by the time he’s about 28 he’ll come out like George Micheal and tell us he’s been sleeping with men all his life, and he’s finally out of the closet…lol.

  • aldo

wow, those 2 sentences i just read made me not to even come close to a movie theater where that thing will be playing, it will bomb

  • aldo

they destroyed the first one, they butchered the whole story, i mean john travolta as edna? plathetic. there will never be another one as the original one, not to mention a sequel! blah!

  • Shell

I really enjoyed the first Hairspray, and I’m not much of a fan of sequels either, but if Adam Shankman is behind it along with John Waters, I think it has real potential

  • Fi

Hairspray 2 sounds like it won’t work. If people would like to see a musical that deals with the changes in the late 60’s see Across the Universe. It doesn’t feel the need to humourise events and make them seem insignificant like this movie plans to do

  • jp

Cindy Lee and Florida Evans: take your h8 and homophobia elsewhere. Shame on you!

  • Who Cares

I LOVED THE FIRST ONE AND I REALLY HOPE THERE IS A SECOND ONE, AND FOR ALL THE PEOPLE THAT DON’T LIKE HAIRSRAY, THEY CAN GO SUCK A BIG ONE, AND I REALLY WANT JOHN TRAVOLTA TO BE EDNA AGAIN, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE HE WON’T SO THAT’S GONNA BE A REAL BIG DISSAPOINTMENT

  • John

Hairspray 2 Fantastic and Nikki Blonsky well i love her in all what she does.

  • Anonymous

what has she done besides Hairspray?
