'Twilight': Early box office is bloody good!

Categories: Box Office

Twilight is off and running on a record pace at the box office. The film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s vampire-romance saga scored $7 million from shows at midnight on Thursday, and it’s on pace to bank as much as $30 mil on Friday, Variety reports. That Harry Potter-esque sum would rank in the Top 20 of the biggest opening-day grosses in history. Moreover, the film is almost assured of exceeding its expected $60-mil-plus first-weekend haul — by far. Check back for updates all weekend, including a special Saturday bulletin and Sunday’s Box Office Report.

Color me pleasantly surprised. I’m curious as to how the other films this weekend are doing (i.e. Bolt, Bond, etc.) compared to Twilight. Maybe I’m being pessimistic, but I’m afraid that everyone who really wanted to see it has done the midnight showing thing.
And PLEASE, for the love of all that is holy, can we have a Twilight-related post of any kind that does not compare it to Harry Potter in some way? Twilight is an engrossing romance, and Harry Potter is a literary phenom that will probably never again be seen. Each time you compare the two, you A) annoy people who know better and B) set ridiculous expectations. I love the Twilight series to death, but I’m not stupid.

Congrats, EW, your incessant hawking of this film has paid off.
I was dragged to it this afternoon by my college-aged girlfriend. I came this close to breaking up with her over it. It was that bad.

  • nathan

It will see a pretty heavy drop in its second week as word of mouth should effectively kill it. $67 mil this week, about 18 next weekend.

  • kelci

It’ll have big numbers this weekend, and then fall off the face of the earth next weekend once word gets out how terrible it is. Heard from several people who’d been planning on 2-3 screenings, saw it, hated it and not seeing it again.

I’m not a teenager or even a twilighter, but I loved it!
I went to an 11 o’clock showing Fri morning. There were lots of people including a group of five men wearing their landscape work shirts! I think it has the appeal to bring in more than the intended audience. I hope it makes the 150 Mil the studio wants so they make a sequal.

I Just loved the movie, Rob, Owned as Edward, I have seen it 5 Times already, and I am seeing it some more times

  • Alex

Dear god, I hated this movie so much. Twilight needs to put in a coffin, buried, and never seen again.

  • BRADD BRADD

Kind of suprised, but a huge opening day was expected. It probably will make 30 million its opening day, but still, all the huge fans will see it on opening day. if its saturday falls around 17% to 25 million and around 30% to 18 million on Sunday, it still will end its weekend with around 73 million– HUGE, close to expectations, but in noooooo wayyyy close to harry potter, who made what is equivelent to 110 million its opening weekend. And word of mouth isn’t good either. It will probably end its run with 200 million, a ton of money for a movie taht cost only 37 million to make. I smell a sequel

Twilight was awkward. I was planning on seeing it again, but it didn’t live up to what I thought it would be like, but then again I had very low expectations (and do so for every book-to-movie film) so I wasn’t disappointed. It was an awkward movie…so many long pauses that it was painfully awkward to be in the audience at times.

  • Amy

I saw Twilight at the midnight premiere and absolutely loved it! I came in with a low expectation because the movie adaptations of books always disappoint me to no end. But I liked this movie so much, as an adaptation and just a film, I will be watching it more time in the days to come!!!

  • Emily

I think Bradd’s $200 million total is exaggerated. It’ll have a nice opening weekend, but some (a lot) of the viewer responses I’ve read indicate that it might not have legs. And the next few weeks have some stiff holiday competition. The more I think about it, the more I think WB knew what they were doing by moving Potter to July. Not only is it prime real estate, but the writers’ strike means that it’s pretty much the only thing out there until late August.
Something tells me this will have a big weekend ($60 million-ish) but a BIG tumble next week.

  • Sarah

I loved it. And I think other people will too. I think that the fans will definitely go more than once and will spend the money to go again and again. Including next weekend. I’m happy for the fans. If you’ve ever been a die hard fan of anything, you know how fun it is to see something you love get attention.

  • Erin

I saw it this afternoon. When I got out of the theater I called my sister and told her I would NOT be going to see it with her tomorrow, like I had originally planned. Seriously, this movie is BAD! I’m not going to pay another nine bucks!

  • mage?!

I used to work in a bookstore and when this book came out I could see what was going to happen. All the buzz amounts to nothing if they can not produce a good product. The books might work if you are a teenage girl, but this movie and all the hype involved is ridiculous. Dumbed down vampires for teens, please. Let it go.

I’m not a teenager, but I did read the books and I LOVED the movie. I didn’t have high hopes as I find books I love generally tend to lose something in the translation to film, but I found the sexual tension palpable, the dialogue had just the right combination of lightness and teen awkwardness and the acting was superb. I would go see it again in an instant.

  • Lynn

Count me in with those who loved the movie. Went with a group that included younger, older, female and male, some had read the books like myself, some had not. No one left disappointed. We knew it was a low budget movie going in and frankly it was refreshing. Packed as much of the book in those 2 hours as possible. Casting was perfect! Can’t wait for the others to be made!

  • Ashley

This movie was horrible, and was like watching a made-for-tv movie. I’ve read the series and had high hopes. It was the worst cinematography I’ve seen in a long time, and the acting wasn’t much better. The special effects of movies made in the 1960’s were better than this! I understand “small budget film” but come on!

  • Tonya

I absolutely loved it. I was a tad dissapointed that they didn’t go just a little deeper in the bedroom discussion scenes but my 11 year old son was highly entertained and my husband, who is a self-described movie critic, thought it was good and he can’t wait to see the next one.

  • Christine

Ugh. Twilight is so overrated. Jeez. Ugh. *pukes*

  • Jessica S.

I enjoyed the movie more than I was expecting. I love the series (and I’m not 14) and went in to the film very cautiously, so as not to be disappointed. Rob Pattinson was tortured and beautiful, Kristen Stewart wasn’t as patronizing as I anticipated, and the rest of the Cullen family were great.
Yes, some lines were a little hokey and delivered a bit stiltedly, but anyone who has read the book can vouch that it has some rather silly dialogue.
I hope it’s successful because I for one want to see the rest of the saga translated onto film!

Having read the book first, I knew what to expect plot-wise from the movie. However I didn’t expect it to be so unintentionally funny. Several “dramatic” parts had the audience cracking up due to the lackluster acting and cheesy scenes. Of course it was the worth the $9 just to stare at Rob Pattinson for two hours, but I wish there had been some lighter scenes between him and Stewart to balance out all the angsty turmoil they were trying to convey.

  • amy

Do you guys get paid per Potter comparison? Seriously?
Here’s a Potter comparison for you, since you guys can’t seem to write a Twilight-related post without one: I felt more emotion and excitement watching a 93-second Half-Blood Prince trailer than I did during the entire 2 hours of Twilight. I think all it did was remind people in my theater that the better franchise returns in July.
This will have a big opening weekend. After that, we’ll see.

I saw it and absolutely loved it. I’m not a teenage girl and while I have read the series, I’m not all that obsessed with it. I thought everyone was pretty much perfectly cast and felt that the connection between Rob and Kristen was palpable. My only grip was the special effects but with the numbers it’s pulling, Summit will give them the necessary budget to fix up New Moon and make it FX amazing.

  • TW

    TWILIGHT WAS SOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOD !!!
DON’T HATE I’VE SEEN IT TWO TIMES ALREADY AND IT WAS EVEN BETTER !!!!

  • HallieS

Twilight was amazing. I have read and dearly love the series. The portrayal of not only the main characters, Bella and Edward, but also the rest of the Cullen clan, as well as Charlie and Jacob and Billy Black was incredible. I was reluctant to transform the vision in my head to the one on screen, but I can honestly say that this movie ranks in my top 5 book to movie attempts. Any attempt to take a beloved novel and translate it to film is hard, but the relationships between the characters on screen is nearly identical to the book. Well done!!!

  • Kass

Oh please Harry Potter fans don’t hate with your 130 million dollar budget !!!
I LOVED TWILIGHT AND I’VE NEVER READ THE BOOKS OR KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT ! People watch it !!! It was sooo good !

  • Leah

I loved Twilight. I’m no teen. I wasn’t expecting to like it. I loved Rob Pattinson’s performance.
