Marvel is making good on its promise to release The First Avenger: Captain America on May 6, 2011. The studio just signed director Joe Johnston (Hidalgo) to helm the project. Johnston,  the director of Universal’s 2009 film The Wolfman, will be charged with transforming Steve Rogers from an unfit military man into a super-powered crime fighter.

It won’t be new territory for the Texan director. He was formerly a visual effects director who won an Academy Award for his work on Raiders of the Lost Ark. No word yet on who Marvel is intending to cast as Captain America but they better get on it soon: Marvel will have its superhero-coalition movie The Avengers in production simultaneously and will need its Captain America for a crucial appearance. The two movies are scheduled to bow two months apart in Summer 2011, which ought to prove a good season to be a comic book fan.

YOu know at this point I would just like Steve Rogers Captain America comic book. They couldn’t of found a worse Multi-title crossover to kill him off after. “I quit,” Wow, great ending (Sarcasm).
Not that a Cap movie wouldn’t be great, but I don’t think it’s doing anything for the poor comic book industry itself.

    Brad pitt for captain america

  • Mel

Scott Porter (comic book geek) for Capt. America!

This should actually be a decent movie. The casting is critical of course. A bit of a challenge since it is a geeky skinny guy who transforms into a muscle bound geeky guy!lol. Hopefully the war action will be realistic, similar to that in Iron Man. Time will tell. We will see Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury somewhere in this one! That will rock! Well here’s hoping for the best…no wait they hired Tom Cruise, dyed his hair blonde, and gave him a rubber body suit to make him look like he has big muscles aka Daredevil… blecccchhhh, can I puke now or later…hahaha

The right stature and the ability to play the part – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would be a great Captain America.

  • Sparky

There’s a guy on Youtube, and he looks just like Cap would look if he were a real person. Please don’t cast some billion-dollar star just for his looks. Cap is not a pretty boy; he is a crusader.

  • ugh

    JACK BLACK FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!!!
    JACK BLACK FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!!!
    JACK BLACK FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!!!
    JACK BLACK FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!!!
    JACK BLACK FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!!!

Yeah, Jack Black as Cap. Way to screw that movie up before it goes straight to video as a bomb. Why not make Cap a black woman and let Beyonce do that too?

  • Shaun

I nominate Patrick Wilson to play Cap!

I think Josh Duhamel would be great. He’s actually a pretty good actor, which may be hard to tell from “Las Vegas”. But, he did some compelling acting on “All My Children”. He can also be funny, and he’s yummy to look at.

  • PS

Josh Duhamel worked as a military man in Transformers, I can see him playing cap.
However, I think a better choice would be Matt Kesslar from The Middleman.

  • Alex

    Matt Damon for Captain America!!

  • Kevin Baldwin

Wow. This has “Daredevil 2″ written all over it. Let’s see…I know. To make Cap more “real” to filmgoers, instead of a red, white and blue costume, we’ll make his costume…black. Yeah. That’s it. Black leather or thick latex with a built-in ribcage and nipples. And instead of a red, white and blue shield it’ll be…black. Wouldn’t want all those patriotic colors to get in the way of “realism”, now would we? Well, after two tries at a Cap movie, we can already expect the costume will suck, but I hope at least they are able to show that Cap’s popularity was less about the costume and more about the man: Steve Rogers.

  • Craig

Matt Damon should play Steve Rogers/Captain America. He has earned his action cred in the Bourne trilogy and would make a great Cap.

  • mage?!

Open casting call for Captain America. Let this be open to an unknown actor, let them take the character to new heights based on acting and not on screen popularity. Every one has to start somewhere, why not?
    Just a thought.
