Gasps all around: CBS topped Thursday yet again. (Yes, we know, shocker.) Survivor: Gabon (11.9 million viewers at 8 p.m.), CSI (18.1 million at 9 p.m.) and Eleventh Hour (11 million at 10 p.m.) dominated their time slots and helped the Eye bring in an average 13.8 million viewers for the evening, according to preliminary data. But the night’s big story was over at the CW, where little engines that could Smallville and Supernatural quietly continue to add to their numbers. Airing at 8 p.m., the Superman show (star Tom Welling is pictured) leaped to 4.8 million (up from last week’s 4.3 million), besting its season premiere. Then, at 9 p.m., Supernatural (3.7 million) was up for the third week in a row, also earning its best ratings since September

Elsewhere, NBC’s freshman comedy Kath & Kim, which just received a full season order, was up again with 5.6 million viewers, as was ABC’s Life on Mars (8.9 million). Mars
Whoopi Goldberg led a pack of celebrities guesting on Thursday TV –
some high profile, some just golden TV veterans (yay, sweeps!). Oprah
stopped by NBC’s 30 Rock, which nabbed 8 million watchers. Jane Seymour played herself on My Name Is Earl (6.6 million). Courtney B. Vance joined his real-life wife, Angela Bassett, on ER (8.6 million). And The O.C.’s Melinda Clarke returned as S&M guru Leady Heather on the night’s top-rated show, CSI. Also of note: The Office (8.4 million) lost more than a million viewers from its previous installment, Ugly Betty (9 million) increased for a third straight week and cracked the 9 million mark for the first time since its season debut, and Grey’s Anatomy (15.3 million) stayed flat and remained No. 1 in the all-important 18-39 demographic.

In on other ratings news, final numbers for Tuesday’s election coverage are in and, as we reported on Wednesday,
ABC attracted the most viewers with 13.2 million tuning in to hear its
pundits chime in on Obama’s big win. NBC came in a close second with
12.1 million viewers, while 7.4 million watched the coverage on CBS,
and 4.7 million witnessed history unfold on Fox.

I’m so pleased about Supernatural. Last night’s episode was really a great example of why I love the show so much. Hilarious, scary, and it made me shed a tear or two.

  • Kathy B

Great news for Supernatural & Smallville. Maybe the CW will finally get behind these shows.

  • rachel elisabeth

    Go SPN!

  • Carrie

Yay for “Smallville” & “Supernatural”! They deserved the boost in ratings. Both shows were terrific last night and “Supernatural” made me laugh so hard, I was crying.

  • Delon

I’m glad that Ugly Betty’s numbers are up, but seems like even Oprah can’t help 30 Rock catch a break.

  • Sulaf

Great news for Supernatural … kudos to everyone involved, keep it up.

Fantastic for Supernatural – I am a late convert (watched most of the 3rd season on TV, then bought all 3 seasons on DVD and watched them all in a little over a week). I could not believe what I missed not watching the first couple of years – as an XFiles/Millennium/Lost fan, this is right up my alley. The family now knows to leave me alone from 9-10 on Thursday (plus with the DVR I rewatch for anything I missed).

I wonder if most people were like me and only turned on Smallville because Kath&Kim sucks.

  • Gabriela

seriously what’s with the CW no giving a proper promotion to these shows geez!!! Look how Smallville is doing it climbing each week and yet the CW keep insisting in promoting 90210 Sucklysta and Gossip Girl,….Instead or recycling and destroying old shows (aka 90210 and future Melrose Place) the CW should be ficus in what it has and what is actually is saving its but from bankrupt.

Life on Mars is a really cool show. This one is going to last

  • TIM JAMES

Supernatural is a show pretending to be supernatural. Really its just different acts of violence and right before the violence, their eyes turn black. And oh, two brothers hunt them down. It ain’t no X-files.

Bet will be giving Smallville another season. Although it has been good this season it is time to find an end game to this show.
As far as Supernatural goes, hard to believe they slashed the budget on this show for…90210.

I love Smallville and Supernatural Supernatural is as scary and as funny as any movies in the theaters right now!! Dean is the best good little bad boy on TV

  • scott

Smallville has been on a role lately with the quality of the episodes and the ratings as well. Smallville and Supernatural is a great night of tv and isn’t it ironic that the CW’s highest rated shows are the one they don’t promote.

  • Michelle

Yay for Smallville! That’s awesome news. The show’s been on FIRE this year!

  • wizkid

Heck yes! Smallville is the best freaking show ever! This season is freaking awesome! I definately hope they make a Season 9!

  • Amy

Supernatural has been my favorite show for the last few years. It is a great show and it keeps getting better!!!

  • Anonymous

Yay for Supernatural! It’s such a shame it’s opposite The Office and and whichever CSI happens to be airing Thursdays.

  • jcpdiesel21

I’m glad to read that the ratings are going up for Supernatural! Hopefully us fans won’t be kept in limbo regarding season 5 and it will be guaranteed due to the good ratings.

  • CandyMaize

I’m am beyond thrilled that Supernatural continues to do as well as it is ratings-wise .. and during sweeps too!! This season’s episodes have been pretty phenomenal – each week I’m just ‘dying’ until it Thursday night again and I get a new episode!!

  • Paula Howley

I am so excited about the ratings for Smallville and Supernatural. I also find it insane that the CW isn’t promoting these fantastic quality shows. Tom Welling has really come into his own this year!!

  • Matt

With Life On Mars growing for the third consecutive week, I think it’s safe to say it has earned the right to a full season committment from ABC. Afterall, according to Variety.com all three ABC shows had higher ratings this Thursday compared to last Thursday

  • evelyn27

Yay for Supernautral and Smallville, although I missed most of the episode, I thought Smallville was pretty good, and Supernatural was just awsome! Loved T. Bear.

  • Ladiesman217

I think Smallville will return for Season 9, It’s getting 1.7 Million viewers more then Gossip Girl, 1.1 Million more then Supernatural, 1.8 Million more then One Tree Hill, It’s the top rated show on THE CW, Let’s hope it reaches 5 Million next week or even 9 Million, Maybe it won’t reach 9 Million, but that would be so awesome.

  • unknown

Nice. I love Supernatural, and i think i’m starting to like Smallville too!

  • Kate

    Yay for Supernatural!

  • Bobbi

Get rid of the old goat Lois and bring back Kara. The ratings are saying that they want Supergirl back and not that old goat Lois with the fake silicone implants.

  • Joey

If Smallville were to end this season, then Supernatural will have to become the lead in on Thursdays with a new show. I think SMV has potential to go in more season. Just proves to show, SMV is surviving and thriving w/o Lex and Lana. Ms. Tess Macer and Doomsday are filling the villian gap great.

  • Joey

Season 9 can concentrate all season on the formation of the Justice League…would be great to see more future superheroes like WWoman, Batman, etc. The good thing about this show is that it made it on its own, where I don’t even care if he ever becomes Superman. SMan is not him in a costume. The Sman movies seem 2b a totally different entity now-a-days. Long Live SMV!

  • Kayla

I was really surprised to see how good this season of Smallville is getting!
