Split personality for new Beyoncé album

Oct 15, 2008, 08:57 AM | by Chris Willman

Categories: Music Biz

Details about Beyoncé’s upcoming album, due in stores Nov. 18, have been hard to come by until now. But yesterday, the singer's father, Matthew Knowles, unveiled the complete tracklisting for members of the press in Hollywood, and even played a few minutes of each song and afforded details about promotional plans. First, it’s a 17-song double-album. However, if the economy has you looking to save a few bucks, you can instead buy a condensed 11-song single-CD version; both editions will go on sale the same day.

The first disc in the deluxe package is on the balladic side, while the second disc focuses on more upbeat, rhythmic material. What’s more, the two discs have separate titles. The first one is dubbed I Am… Beyoncé. Papa Knowles said the name of the second disc will remain a secret for now and revealed in connection with an upcoming promotion; he would only refer to it as “I Am dot-dot-dot.” Rumors suggest that the name of the second disc will be I Am... Sasha, the name Beyoncé has given herself in the past as an alter ego. (If you want to take a wild guess at what kind of promotion Knowles is alluding to, there’s already a contest-laden teaser website, whoissashafierce.com, that may offer some clues.)

Despite rumors of collaborations with Kanye West and Justin Timberlake, there are no guest stars on the new album. Beyoncé’s dad said this was a purposeful choice designed to spotlight the singer's growth without fellow celebs getting in the way. He did, however, allude to plans for a guest on the song "Ego" that fell through. Given the title and playful lyrics (“It’s too big/It’s too wide/It’s too strong/It won’t fit...He’s got a huge ego...I love his big ego”), one could guess this was the track designed for a West cameo, though Knowles demurred when asked what happened with the celebrated rapper.

More, including a full track list, after the jump...

The two-CD version will sell for about $4 or $5 more than the single-disc version, according to Knowles, who said the less expensive edition is aimed at meeting the demand for CDs priced under $10 these days. Knowles said they expect about a 50/50 split between sales of the two versions.

Two singles are being pushed simultaneously: I Am... Beyoncé's “If I Were a Boy” to top 40 and adult contemporary, and I Am...'s Single Ladies” to rhythmic formats; “Halo” and “Ego” will be the second singles for those formats, respectively. (Urban adult contemporary radio, meanwhile, is about to be offered a Beyoncé single that isn’t even on her new album: the Etta James cover “At Last,” from the soundtrack of Cadillac Records, which hits stores Dec. 3 with three new Beyoncé tracks.)

Not enough Beyoncé developments for you? All right, here’s more: A video album of clips for every song -- much like the DVD she did for her last album -- will arrive in February, about the same time as a Spanish-language version of the new set (not to mention still another Beyoncé movie, Obsessed). Then she kicks off a 110-date tour in April, starting in Canada before going on to Europe, the States, Mexico, South America, and a week-long stint in Vegas, before wrapping up in Japan, Africa, and Australia.

As for the new record, Daddy Knowles said 70 songs were recorded over eight months, but only 17 lucky tunes made the cut. Here’s a full listing, along with the individual producers (Beyoncé gets her own producer credit on each number, naturally, as well):

kramathele Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 04:39 AM EST

i like you b

Franskizzle Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 04:08 AM EST

i am LOVING if i were a boy and i think having the 2 seperate disks/personas is a really clever way of expressing two sides of her. and overexposure??! please, she's just reaching the height of her career and tackling all she can while she's there, much like whitney in the late 80s and early 90s wit her music and films.
The only criticizm i hav is that so far, the two singles sound a tad like a repeat of bday. If i were a boy sounds like a more soulful version of irreplaceble so its still different, but SINGLE LADIES!!! its like a re-recorded cross between GET ME BODIED and GREEN LIGHT. We need something fresh! hopefully the next two singles will bring that.

PTOWNTAY Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 12:05 PM EST

I'm not even sure if I'll but the album before it goes on sale. The point of my statement is that I am a fan, but her albums like many others are way overpriced. The main thing that I want everyone here to understand is that her marketing team is genious! Call it over exposure but has anyone seen those Optimum commercials? That annoying marketing strategy is making Cablevision outsell the competition. Wake up and smell the money. The strategy is working so well we are sitting here talking about an album that isn't even out yet. She really is the S**t! Again, I salute.

j Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 08:44 AM EST

I can't lie B is the shi** but I hate how everyone acts like she's the only one with talent. SHE'S NOT!!! U don't know that bcuz ur so stuck in her butt. I like beyonce but I just hate how they play her out. How many times have u heard get me bodied? Too many. Sure I'll buy the cd, after it goes on sale.

PTOWNTAY Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 08:39 PM EST

Brandon and Monalisa,
It's just like a group of haters to blog their contempt for someone they can't stand. You guys obviously don't go to concerts because the only other REAL performer on either list was Ms.Alicia Keys. Go to a couple of shows and concerts then put your heads together and gather a list of performers that actually sell tickets. Some of those people haven't even had a chance to perform in front of a live audience. Monalisa you must be the President of the JLo fanclub. To all Queen Be haters, it's ok to quit your day jobs, hating can be very time consuming...isn't there a Kelly Clarkson blog site for the two of them?

Denise H Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:30 PM EST

I DON'T LIKE THE TRACK LISTING (EVEN THOUGH I HAVEN'T HEARD THEM YET) BUT THE GOOD ARENT ON THERE LIKE: LOST YO MIND, FOREVER TO BLLED, KICK EM OUT, AND WHAT'S IT GONNA BE. I KNOW THIS CD WILL STILL BE GOOD. I'M A DIE HARD BEYONCE FAN. NOBODY CAN TOP HER.

Truth Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

What is up with all of the haters? Do you normally go out of your way to write things online about why you don't like somebody? Weird...Sad.

Anyway, Beyonce has still got it, and she's still doin it! I really enjoy both new singles. And the videos are awesome, too. Keep doin ya thang!

Brazio Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 07:20 PM EST

Im sorry but i have 2 say that both of her singles are weak and so unoriginal, she has ran out of ideas.

MONALISA Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

I would also like to add Jennifer Hudson, Jaqui Velasquez and JoJo (that girl can sing!!! a young Mariah, whistle register and all).

I agree with brendan there are many good singers out there beyonce is not the only one

get real

Brandon Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

There are a lot of good singers around today and some of them, have better music too.

On the top of my head:

Christina Aguilera

Leona Lewis

Mariah Carey

Alicia Keys

Kelly Clarkson

Amy Winehouse

Duffy

Adele

Virginia Blockdell

and many more, half of the people on my list are better than her and the other half such as Kelly Clarkson, are just as good and with better material, wich makes her a better artist overall.

Ger your head out of her fat, has-been ass. There are plenty of good singers today who are not as overhyped as this woman of average talent, it's not my fault you don't know them.

PTOWNTAY Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 02:29 AM EST

OK. Her team got me to buy into the whole, 'Beyonce's is the best that has ever done it', crap. Back in the day there were a lot of true singers. But I see that you still couldn't tell me who is better right now, not back when Marvin Gaye was alive. Please stick to the question at hand before you blame her success on her 'team' and not her talent. There's so many people that are waiting for you to hate on them. Haters need jobs too...there is a recession! Get ya hate on. LMAO

lilmouse Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 12:02 AM EST

this girl bores me to tears XD moving on...

AMAYRA Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 11:48 PM EST

BEYONCE ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ SHAKIRA WANNABE GO HOME THOSE SONGS TITLES SOUND TRITE AND BORING ZZZZ IM OVER HER
PEACE

Brandon Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 11:44 PM EST

Im not a J.lo fan, I just don't buy into the whole "Beyonce is the most talented woman ever" thing her team and her fans so desperately try to sell. Sorry, I apologize for having an opinion.

PTOWNTAY Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 11:32 PM EST

To Brandon,
You must be really depressed or something. Comparing Beyonce to Whitney is very last decade. What singer/performer is better than her from this millenium? You must be a J.Lo fan. Whitney can't even perform her own songs anymore! Get a grip! Beyonce is the girl you wish you had!!!

Brandon Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

I saw this woman in concert last year because a friend of mine got free tickets, apparently they were filming the concert for tv or something but the place wasn't sold out so they gave out a bunch of free tickets to fill the empty seats. To the point: I have respect for her, she puts on a good show and she can sing but she's not amazingly talented like her team wants us to believe. Her music is mediocre and her voice is good but Whitney Houston she is not. I wouldn't buy any of her albums, she has nothing new to offer.

Victor Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 10:41 PM EST

She stole if I were a boy from a singer named BC Jean. This chick is so unoriginal, I won't be buying her album, she can't even sing anyways.

Dolly Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 10:38 PM EST

Beyonce is boring and her music is played out. NEXT >>>>>>>>>>

Raya Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 03:06 AM EST

I was just wondering how you got the song 'if I were a boy' because I saw that this song was written by another up and coming artist? Was the song stolen?

Beyonce is like a breath of fresh air. We live in a world full of watered down studio singers and lipsinging dancers. Beyonce is sharing REAL talent and true performance skills. She is truly blessed and so are we that she is giving us the music and showmanship that we pay for. GO Ms.Queen Be! I salute!

fancypants Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

i'm a Beyonce fan, but i want to caution her to focus on the quality of her material rather than the quantity. if she strives to produce higher quality material every other year or so, her songs will have more impact. as it is, she just has too much stuff out, and it's hard to really savor any one song. plus, she's veering towards overexposure. i have no idea why she makes films because she certainly cannot act. like i said, i am a beyonce fan.

Me Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

I LOVE REO! HES LIKE THE GREATEST UP AND COMING PRODUCER! I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR HIS MATERIAL ON BEY'S PROJECT.

Mrs.Kennb10 Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 01:51 AM EST

Beyonce&other hard working talented actors, musicians, etc.in the industry work hard to give us all some of the things that make our lives a little more enjoyable. We can choose to appreciate them for their fabulousness, or choose not to watch/listen. If you can afford to buy it because you like it, then great! If you can't afford to, then don't. However, the choice to speak badly about people who are doing what they love, while giving us all something we can enjoy is ignorant.
Be supportive, if not loving even. They are human beings with feelings first, just like the rest of us. They aren't hurting anybody&life is too short!

Fatima Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 08:12 PM EST

So Beyonce is part to blame for the economy?

Why buy anything then? Why pay for a subscription to this magazine? Why even pay for internet? I'm sure no one would have said that about the friggin Dark Knight when people saw it 10 times

fatu sankoh Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

i want to know if my one and only beyonce will come to washington dc we love her here that will make my day

fatu sankoh Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 06:22 PM EST

i love beyonce i love the two singles i cant wait to buy them both i hope you hate mongers live bey alone god bless bey the more you hate on our bey the more god and we her fans will love her for life

Karen Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

This sounds so promising! I'm looking forward to this new album.

LOL123 Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

lol it wasn't beyonce who stole it it was toby gab!!!, people just accuse beyonce because she is the star and indeed, beyonce changed some lyrics on the song, she changed it to "I'd Kick It to whom I wanted and I never get confronted for it" even though it's that short still she was able to change it and credits are on her as a co- writer!!!TOBY GAB was the thief not beyonce!

BJohnson Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

I'll buy it. I know that the second disc is probably Sasha because she's talked about that performing side of her. Looks like November is the hot month for the new music.

Iono Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

I have to agree with Seann. If the economy is indeed that bad why are you people still buying stuff like this? lol... Well at least you all are helping Beyonce not to feel the sting of the economy.

jaycee Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

BTW she credited the writer for the Boy song on 106 yesterday, people write songs and sell them to others all the time... Probably your favorite song was a remake

jaycee Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

Beyonce is beautiful and talented I am excited about the album and the tour. I don't care if people have overkill! Don't buy/listen its free will:) why waste your time hating

Fatima Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

Not one mention of BC Jean because it was a demo that Beyonce legally is using.

sam Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

omg! y u ppl hating! Beyonce is a hardworking women! she isn't lucky at gettin everything at once!! she had to work hard for that! remember, she spent 8 months doing it! luv u bee! cnt wait to c u in the UK!

dave-o Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

not one mention of how she blatantly stole bc jean's song "if i were a boy". beyonce is an oversinging waste of oxygen. wooo-waaa-wooooooooo-aaaaaa-iiiiiaiaiiaiaiaaaaa, yeah yea yeahhhh

tj Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

Why don't you guys give her some credit for all the hard work she's been doing. I quess you have to be in the bad girl/slut/junky catagory to get respect. Beyonce is better than all that. She a real woman not affraid to show her feelings
YOU GO GIRL!!!!!!!!

Fatima Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 10:21 AM EST

I will give it to you that Beyonce might be a little too driven sometimes, but as a fan, I'm not really sweating it. She seems to like having everything in her life happen at once.

Anonymous Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

This is over kill. She is like a robot. After a while, she is going to crash and burn.

harry Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 10:02 AM EST

wow this seems like a real hit. I hope the songs can hold their own. I love concept material.

Fatima Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 09:42 AM EST

I am so excited. When I read the rumors yesterday I nearly died. If I had a problem with B'Day, it was that there were too few tracks. I can't wait even if the Sasha title is corny. And 110 tour dates!?! She has to be coming to Minneapolis this time!

jfms777 Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 09:32 AM EST

It is really interesting to compare Beyonce's solo career to when Diana Ross went solo in the 70s. Clearly there are differences, but similarities (in media perception and EGO) are striking.

susan Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 09:18 AM EST

I'm sorry, I've always loved Beyonce but she sounds so full of herself I can't even believe it. I won't be wasting my money on this now.

grace Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 08:44 AM EST

Dang why can't Nov. 18th be today! I can't wait for the WEEK LONG VEGAS SHOWS (...having a heart attack here). More and more Beyonce!

Seann Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 08:25 AM EST

...or better yet. If you're that concerned with the declining state of the economy, don't buy some overproduced album(s) by this mediocre diva. If the economy is that bad, why are you still buying albums??

QuestLuv Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 08:22 AM EST

That's a lot of Beyonce! Are you ready for all that jelly?
